Steel Empire
You'd never think that a shmup that has you flying a dirigible would be fun, but Steel Empire proves otherwise. Using the whole steampunk theme long before Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow brought it to the big screen, it was one of the more obscure games in the genre. It was recently revived on the Game Boy Advance, but the Genesis version is the one to own. Read our full report on it and you'll agree!

Is this game hard to find? it looks like a lot of fun.
-
I don't think it is. Not the best shooter out there, but yeah. It's gotta lotta style!
-
It's been quite cheap whenever I've seen it for sale, but that hasn't been too often. I'd rank 'er as "uncommon".
-
It can be had for nothing on eBay, however.
-
I beat it in one sitting, but really liked it. The style is unique for a shmup, and the length and challenge is just right. Shmups fans should check it out.
-
One of the easier shmups I've played for sure. The weaponry is lame and jurassic-era, very basic like an early 8 bit shmup...say simple as Sky Shark....but the graphics overall are pretty darn spiffy I must say. It's definitely worth a run-through.
-
This game kind of looks familiar when I rented genesis games back in the day. Though because of the cover I just skipped it. The graphics do look good on the screenshots.

sega 16 needed more of these games
yust like bio hazard
there are to little games for this sytem

Picked this up today at a Car Boot sale, played a couple of stages. Quite impressed with the intro and the whole theme. Then again I love shooters and I'm going to enjoy playing this more.
-
Steel empire, to me, is strictly above average.
It's good for one play through, but once you beat it, your done.
-
This is one of those shmups that made the genesis freaking great. I love how you can play as a blimp, let alone, one that shoots backwards, lol. Its very a unique shmup since your playing in the steam ages, something I don't think I ever saw in another game. Great music, fun stages and I'm still trying to beat it.
Its one of those MUST HAVE titles in your collection.

I think Steel Empire (Empire Of Steel) is hugely underrated as a game,i see it as one of the best shooters and quite possibly the best horizontal shootem-up on the MD,i am surprised some of you guys have found it easy i find it quite a challenge :p
-
Its a good horizontal shooter, I enjoy it too. Maybe not quite as good as Gynoug or Bio Hazard Battle but its up there.

Picked this one up about a year ago, found it out of the blue when I wasn't looking for it, I do remember "trying" it out first via emulation to see how good it was. I was pleasantly surprised, sure it's not the prettiest shmup on the system, nor the best, but it is what it is, a good time waster, with a nice steampunk theme. It's a theme that at that time in video games was very unique (then again was it ever done again after?).
File it under G for a good above average shmup that doesn't try to wow you with graphical effects, but it makes up for it in style. Bosses do tend to take up a huge chunk of the screen (but not nearly as bad as it does in the GBA port later on), giving little room for maneuvering around, and some enemy shots are a little on the smaller size, but that can be overcome with patience and persistance.
