20 minutes until I put my hands on my new Retrogen!
Heres a vid of the retrogen doin some BLAST PROCESSING! lol

So I hope someone gets the Gen Mobile thursday, and can test out the games mentioned here that gives problems.
BECAUSE IT'S NOT EMULATION-BASED CLONES.
Because people still aren't getting this, I'll explain it again:
emulators (in terms of video games at least, the dictionary definition may differ) are software that mimic the hardware of another device (game system, calculator, computer, etc.). Clones are reproductions of the original hardware that generally use simplified components to cut costs for affordability. A PSP running Picodrive is emulation, a RetroGen playing Sonic 2 from a cartridge is a clone. Emulation requires a much more powerful processor because it first must convert all code from the original Genesis code to a code that the computer it is running on can understand. Clones simply run the code straight from the game natively. A non-IBM DOS computer was usually called a "clone" back in the day because it wasn't considered the native computer but ran the same software. On the other hand, a Windows XP computer running DOSBox is an emulator because it is using software to mimic the chipset of a DOS computer.
The reason the sound is not as good on the RetroGen as original hardware or most modern emulators is because the components used don't fully replicate the original chip's processes in one way or another, causing functionality problems. A clone compared to real hardware is like a quality black and white TV from back in the day vs. one of those $25 black and white TVs you used to see at grocery stores or Wal-Mart made of the cheapest plastic you've ever seen. On the other hand, a computer running a black and white TV simulation program is emulation. Get it now?
But 17days, that Atgames/Blaze MD (and similar handhelds) has always been emulation based, and it seems those have been arround for a couple years with little to no improvement in the emulator software...
At least with hardware clones you can often fix the compatibility (a couple will even work with Virtua racing, and I assume PBC and probably 32x if they had the sega AV port) along with sound issues yourself with modifications. (and Yobo put out a nice quality one with the FC 3 Plus -albeit without VR/PBC/32x compatibility or original controllers - I think the latter can be modded though)
Just a quick update:
Not all shmups have slowdown. Thunder Force II and Space Harrier II are PERFECT (and, with the circular motion required during gameplay, the d-pad seems to be specially designed for them). They even look better on the small screen, somehow. And, not all fast action games have slowdown, either. In fact, most games I've tried play awesomely. I have to say it again, the more you play this baby, the more you fall in love with it. You soon notice how much better these 16 bit titles are than, say, most GBA titles; and you only get to fully grasp the concept when you place them side by side with the same screen size. Although, I found that out when I first saw the Game Boy player in action on a 32 in screen.
I L O V E this machine!
I forgot it was Columbus Today yesterday.....NO MAIL.....hopefully it will be waiting for me when I get home later.
One big advantage of the new portables is being able to test out carts at yard sales and such before buying them and finding out they were soaked in water for 5 years. Hell that and a copy of Video Game Trader and your a one man Genesis cart buying machine.
I'll give Hyperkin a call today and find out what the story is on the GEN Mobile. Hopefully the wait is almost over for that one and the GEN Core.
How would you guys like car/wall chargers for the Retrogen and GEN Mobile?
I was wondering why I didn't get mine! I forgot all about Columbus Day, but with the high percentage of Native Americans here, people ignore it around here (other than gov jobs like the mail, of course).
Hopefully it's here today. My Postal Carrier doesn't come around until later in the afternoon, so I won't know until this evening.
Aren't there already charging stations for things meant to charge via USB? I've got one for my PS3 controllers. It seems to me to be a matter of finding one that looks like a decent match to the RetroGen.
^ Is that safe?
Will this be able to charge up if i connect it to a ps2 console's usb port, or an xbox (not 360)using a hacked joypad cable which has a standard usb female socket ?
Like this ,but one that looks less shite :D

I really hope it comes in the mail today......
Yes. All they are are USB connectors hooked to a power supply with a custom stand... at least, that's all my PS3 "charger" is. It also has an LED that changes color depending on if the charging device is drawing a charge or not (so you can tell if the device is done charging). Look at the normal way to charge these devices: a plain USB cable. There's nothing active on the supply side - it's all in the device.
Source? Just because it uses a multi-cart interface doesn't automatically make it an emulator, remember the 6-pak?
I think The Red Zone is the best way to test it what this thing can do in terms of slowdown and what not.
if those ports have a 5V power line in them (no idea if they do). Can you buy those XBOX->USB cables ready made, btw? I've heard you can use USB flash drives with them, though I'm not 100% sure how that would work unless it recognizes it as a memory card.
I'll just charge mine via my xbox360 or laptop
Got it in the mail when i got home from work. The thing is beautiful. Plays all my carts perfectly except for Castlevania bloodlines.
I'm going to upload a video of my first impressions of it soon guys. Great stuff.
Yay! Mine came today! It works great, and even better, it comes with a LONG USB cable instead of those silly short cables you usually get with something like this.
Awesome! Glad all of these things are starting to get to people's homes!
You know what I would say is the absolute best part about the retrogen? The fact that its gettin me to play genesis games so much again.
Yea I always have my genesis hooked up, but thx to the retrogen, im playin them more on the genesis system itself as well! and hell today I bought Super Monoco GP (3bucks) and ordered Mortal Kombat II off ebay (7 bucks, cart only)
I just got mine. It's pretty nice. I think the sound thing is kind of blown out of proportion. I mean, it's off, but it's not unlistenable.
So far, everything I've played on it has worked fine except Toy Story, which is all kinds of weird.
I noticed that you really have to press the buttons deliberately. A feather touch just won't work here.
Finally, I think something's putting pressure on my screen since there's a dark spot on it that goes away when you press on the case. For that matter, it looks like pressing hard on the d-pad causes the screen to distort a little. Build quality is kind of weak, IMO.
In short, it gets the job done for what I want. It's definitely worth what I paid for it and I'm happy with the purchase.
if you aren't too scared of messing it up, there are probably some foam spacers behind the screen if it's anything like a PSP and you could cut them down some so they don't force the screen against the case as much. I once didn't notice there was an extra one on a PSP and the screen had a pressure dark spot and removing it fixed the problem.
Questions:
- +1 on "What's wrong with Castlevania Bloodlines?"
- How does MK2 play out for you guys?
- Have you guys been able to perform special moves on Street Figher or MK games (except MK1)? For that matter, have you been able to perform fatalities?
- Does anyone love this unit more than me? :D
Some findings of my own: the TotoTek MD-Pro flash cart works fine with the RetroGen. Spent some time playing Zero Tolerance from the MD-Pro on it. The menu for the Neo Super 32X/MD/SMS flash cart works, but once the game is copied to PSRAM, it won't start. That might possibly be cured with a change to the menu. I've been working on my own menu the last few days, so I'll try a few things once I have it going. That's the current state of the two MD flash carts out right now.
quickscifi, you have have mk2? how does it work on the retrogen??
^I have it sealed. I'm afraid to open it just to see how it works. I may just have to.
...Vote now.
P.S.> MK3: You can't perform any special moves/ MK1: You can perform special moves, but the d-pad will work like a joystick and, so far, I haven't been able to perform fatalities (in any of the two). It seems I'm going for the GEN Mobile just for my MK games and other fighters. Still love this machine, though. I, too, find myself playing more Genesis games than ever (It was a theory I had previous to owning this machine, that I'd be playing more games simply because it's so easy to plug in the cart and go).
It doesn't even boot up. Maybe I'm not putting it in right. :?
Oh, and the D-Pad is really bad for Fighting games. For everything else it's bearable but playing Street Fighter II is almost impossible. The rest of the buttons are fine and the screen is truly amazing. It's so clear. Good stuff all around. I hope it lasts a while.
Did you try flipping the region switch and resetting? There's no indication of which way is NTSC or which is PAL. The directions even says "flip the switch and hit reset if it doesn't boot." :)
Does Castlevania Bloodlines pop up the Konami logo and then get stuck? If it does, the region switch is in the wrong position. If not, your cartridge may be faulty(doubt it), or the RetroGEN is not compatible with it.
That would be a HUGE bummer for me if I get the RetroGEN, as I LOVE the Castlevania series and would like to play more of Bloodlines, preferably on the go. Lame!
