They aren't... at least, not on my RetroGen. X/Y/Z are all the same size, and are smaller than A/B/C which are also all the same size. I'm happy I got the retrogen.

The GenMobile moved the speaker to where the RESET button is on the RetroGen, and moved the RESET button closer to the DPad as a result of that. As to the buttons being close on the RetroGen - you need all the parts pretty close to keep the size of the PCB down to keep costs low. That's probably why the GenMobile moved the speaker and RESET button - it probably made the PCB a little smaller, saving even more money.

EDIT: I just pre-ordered the GenMobile (black version). Depending on how it turns out, I'll probably give one or the other to my brother.

Yea I meant to say GenMOBILE.
but why would the Z and C buttons be extras? A,B,C is all used on all games. Retrogen got it right, with x,y,z bein a little smaller than a,b,c.

Do they both sound like a bag of cats in heat, as far as the expected clone audio mutilation gos?

I'm still recovering after my last purchase of clone hardware. :lol:

GUESS: They're thinking ahead to when "native" games come out. The majority of controllers and handhelds out now use the four buttons in a diamond array, so native games will probably be the same... with two extra buttons above the diamond instead of shoulder buttons.

That's a very good point, I had nearly forgotten about that. The games will be neat to see when they come out. I'm personally hoping that they bring over ported Chinese and Korean titles-- not to mention the South American titles that have yet to be seen anywhere else. Just my thoughts.

I just got Mortal Kombat II in the mail today, you can indeed to the special moves (like sub zero freezing people) in the game (on the RetroGen)

Has anyone found any good case solutions for the Retrogen and carts yet? Right now I'm thinking when I get the system I'll probably just find a camera case or something that can fit the system by itself, and then have a secondary case to hold a few game carts. I was also wondering if an old GBA case might work, since the Retrogen looks like it's about the same size.

I won't know until next week though. Being on my honeymoon is nice and all, but I can't order a Retrogen since I won't be at home to sign for the package, and I seriously doubt there's B&M stores around here that would have it.

Thanks for the advice. At the moment I have a Dingoo A320 which emulates most games fine, but it won't play two of my favourites (Virtua Racing and Sub-Terrania) and I would really like to play those on a handheld.

Picodrive for the Wiz plays VR. You could always flog the Dingoo and get a Wiz instead.

...on that same note. Is there a thread about this in this forum? A Nomad with a Li-ion battery from a private third party? I wouldn't mind owning every portable Genesis variant. ;)

The worst part about Li-ion batteries is that they 'Die' with or without usage.

The fact that the battery has no compartment in these handhelds is a pain in the ass. It would be really helpful if the developers made the battery a modular piece of hardware they could sell and support aside from the main unit.

They're probably seeing it as cost effective & disposable enough to reap profits from replacement sales instead of long term support. :nod:

I would be willing to bet that it uses a standard battery type, just we don't know what it is yet. It's not an expensive enough device to have proprietary batteries.

Well I'm glad I waited to see how the Retrogen was before buying it.

I don't mind the bad sound too much as it's a mobile system and I'm only going to play it on its one tiny built in speaker. Its not like I'm hooking it up to the stereo to play on a TV like I would my actual Genesis so I agree the sound on these little handhelds is not as important. Sure it would be nice if it was better but its not a deal breaker.

The built in games are no deal breaker either but the licensed games are certainly a bonus!

But mainly I've heard the screen on the Retrogen gets funky on the sides if you are pressing the buttons a little harder. I hope this isn't an issue on the Gen Mobile since it has a smaller screen and shouldn't be as close to the buttons to begin with. The real question on the screen is how does it look? If its smaller but looks as good in terms of sharpness and brightness I'm fine with that. I also just think it plain looks better overall. I like the way the D-Pad looks and just the shell overall. Plus I think the Gen Mobile looks great in blue!

Can't wait to see some hands on reviews from one of our trusted sources to see what one I'll be getting!

I haven't seen any problems with the LCD while pressing buttons. However, I DID notice that the view angle when you tilt the left side away is much smaller than tilting in any other direction. Tilting the left side away causes almost immediately the screen to change color and brightness, while any other direction is viewable for a much greater angle. So maybe some people twist their RetroGen more that direction while playing. I have a tendency in the rotating levels of S&K to twist it all sorts of directions, and that makes it a little harder to play on the LCD. By the way, I was playing it on the TV today... it's got a nice composite output. Good color and very sharp. Not bad for composite. They must use a half-way decent encoder.

Yeah, I missed ordering it from Gamesboro, so I ended up getting it on fleabay. I might still pick up a Gen Mobile though, and sell whichever one I like the least :)

Everyone who got through the order process for the Retrogen is A-OK. So no worries bud. The system turned the item off as soon as the last one sold, and all of those ordered were shipped out earlier today.

In other news it is going to be a long wait for the Retrogen, but the GEN Mobile is right around the corner for your Genesis fix.

I'm holding out until after the Gen Mobile comes out and I can see some reviews of both systems until I figure out which one I want. I am extremely excited for this, I've been checking this thread since it started for updates on them. I'm thinking I'll get the Gen mobile because the dpad looks more to my liking. I doubt the sound will improved at all, but if it is, I'll be elated.
