whats the deal does its headphone jack put out stereo or what
So does anyone know when the SD-cartridge for Firecore will be available?
What it supports?
And perhaps even how much it will cost?
Nobody quite has all the details yet on the SD cart.
GEN MOBILES ARE BEING SHIPPED TO US NOW!!!!
The wait is almost over!
Well now this is pretty exciting. To those that own one, I have a couple questions (these may have been shared already):
1) is this a real Genesis-on-a-chip or a Genesis emulator?
2) does anyone know the compatibility rate for SRAM games like Sonic 3/RPGs, Games like Virtua Racing and Panorama Cotton, and Master System games via an adapter cart?
3) Is it Game Genie compatible?
4) Will it play import "lock-outs" like Yu Yu Hakusho/Alien Soldier?
5) Do either of these have any stereo sound? The Radica Genesis did but it required a mod.
6) Anyone opened one up to take pictures to see if there's a video mod possible? I managed to produce an S-Video mod for the Radica Genesis, hopefully the same is possible here.
Thanks to anyone that can answer any of these..

it's an emulator unfortunately, the rest I can't answer.
I myself was interested if it was a real GOAC, but since it's not, might as well stick to the PSP since it's the same thing...only better...much better.
wow, that's so sad. I got really excited for nothing. Fortunately the people that made Radica Genesis portables at BenHeck.com won't be kicking themselves now though.
BTW, My recommendation would be to get a GP2X instead of a PSP if you're really looking for the best portable Genesis emu:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GP2X
I've owned both and the PSP was a colossal headache whereas the GP2X is open source and has the much nicer SD card support. My two cents anyway.
I wonder why Sega would license an emulation of the Genesis. They must be really desperate for money (which I know they are since Sega USA just moved into a smaller building)
ah, what a bummer.

I read that the retrogen has the basic plastic feel of a genesis cart. how solid does the GenMobile feel?
hows the battery life ?
i was never too fond of rechargeable battery packs they just degrade over time , what might be 6-8 hours now in a couple of months could be 3-4 hours
I don't think that happens much with the GBA SP's rechargeable battery...maybe the Retrogen battery will be just as good??
I've never found the PSP to be a headache. I've already got 2 with broken UMDs, so there's no reason to shell out for a GP2X. I probably won't upgrade until a system has near perfect NES/SNES/Genesis support (PSP is close, but not close enough).
not with Lithium Ions. I had my N-Gage QD cell phone for 5 years and it still kept the charge about the same, and that's using it day in and day out. I actually thought it was degrading at one point so I bought a new battery and the life was exactly the same. What happened to you was probably memory effect from not fully discharging NiCd batteries on a regular basis before recharging them.
The plastic is about the same for the system, but the GEN Mobile buttons are superior to the Retrogen.
yeah, lithium-ion batteries do not degrade like Ni-MH and Ni-Cd. The Nomad rechargeable battery pack used NiMH and the old Game Gear ones used to use NiCd ones. So there's never been a Genesis portable to use Li-ion (in fact, GBA SP was the first mainstream portable to ever use one to the best of my knowledge). So it's a big leap for a Genny portable and should run quite well for a long time.

'New' NiMH batteries have a lower discharge rate that's comparable to Li-ion, and a much longer shelf life. The best ones you can use these days as far as AA, AAA, C & D standards go, assuming you're not using it for 'emergency storage'.
Lithium Ion self discharges faster, and can go shelf dead if it's capacity falls too low. It's also a higher density cell, so it can hold more in the short term, but it's more volatile & prone to explosion or a performance reaction to temperature variation.
I'd be happier if industries would either abandon Li-ion standard for LSD-NiMH, or found a new technology all together. Currently MAIL batteries are promising & getting a lot of attention.
I think the Sega Nomad is still the best we can do.
As long as we spring for the LED mod.
About 11 hours of battery life off of 6AA 3000mah Nimhs. (maybe a little more, but this is assuming that you get 6.5 hours without the mod, and with good 3000 mah's)
No oddly position buttons, no crappy emulated stuff, and probably the best dpad out of these options too.
does the genmobile comes with a wiststrap
I'll find out for you shortly. I'll post a video of the box tomorrow.
Hello folks, this is My first time posting here (Though I've been lurking for years, just haven't had anything to contribute).
I know it's been asked before, but I haven't seen an answer so I'll ask again:
Does the GENmoblie output stereo sound out it's headphone jack? I can deal with the inaccurate sound reproduction and slight game incompatibilities, but no stereo sound would unfortunately be a deal-breaker for Me. Hell, good stereo output (and clearer composite-out) are the reasons I finally de-commissioned My model 2 unit and started using an HD Graphics, TMSS model 1.
Nope, mono sound.
A lot of the stuff you mentioned is fixed/monitored by li-ion circuits (which is why li-ion battery packs usually come with PCBs mounted to them). Yes, they are very sensitive, and that's why these PCBs are necessary for all series-celled Li-ion batteries and (most of them, esp. the good ones) will constantly monitor lower threshold voltage, discharge and charging current rates, etc. So if a batteries voltages goes below the threshold the PCB cuts it off. This is how most all li-ion batteries on the market are protected.
Li-ion is sensitive to temperature like all batteries, a little bit moreso yes, but it takes a large variation in temperature to really destroy one. Li-poly is a little more sensitive here too.
That said, a lot of these PCBs go faulty, especially in high discharge applications like laptops or where manufactures are cutting costs. However, in an application like a portable system or cell-phones, especially when they are charged and discharged often, li-ion is a wonderful alternative to other battery forms out there since it has (with li-poly) the highest power density-to-weight ratio. So you get the longest life for size/weight of any battery except li-poly. But an li-ion battery is only as good as it's protection circuitry and manufacture. Judging from GBA SP and cell phones (similar apps) the Li-ion batt sounds great for this.
yeah, the Nomad D-pad is something phenomenal. Nothing has ever come close IMHO, except Neo-Geo CD pads (and they break very quickly since the button contacts degrade).Quote:

I would say Nomad is the best official alternative, homemade portables (like Radicas or even the CDX one I made if you don't mind the weight) are the best overall. but price/time is going to kill you on the later option.

Any links to those home mades?
@beastech:
Thanks for the heads up, I guess I'll be sticking to My blurry-but-functional nomad for the time being.
@segasonicfan:
Dude, Your portable CDX is awesome! I was wondering, how difficult is it working with LCD screen modules? I've been wanting to retro-fit My nomad with a modern screen, but, to be perfectly honest, I don't have any idea on how to actually DO it. :(
Thanks! My CDX portable was always a love/hate thing online because a lot of people didn't like the ghetto-made case for it. but it worked great and was a dream to play Popful Mail on the go among other things.
Unfortunately these kind of mods take a good bit of soldering/modding knowledge. but it's never too late to start learning the stuff, I first started hacking with a Nomad and worked my way up. I suggest working on cheaper things first though because you *will* break things :P the people at benheck.com forums will help you out too.
You can find a little bit of my CDX here (scroll down) and a ton of custom made portables over here.Quote:

To see the current Genny ones (and a lot of the Radica genny mods finished and unfinished) check out www.benheck.com (he made one called the Exodus) and the Genesis hacking section in the forums on that site.
EDIT: here's the link in the forum to all Sega portables
Here is the box video I promised. Sorry I didn't get it up yesterday.
Can anybody name the game that you can hear in the background? It starts up about halfway through.
does the genmobile come with a white string thing that holds genmobile
Nice box! :)
It looks so much more 'for real' than the retrogen.
I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this but why not just bring back the original Nomad instead of reinventing the wheel.
It was perfect (battery life aside). The new portables seem to lack that necessary classic Genesis D-pad. If they did that i'd buy two or three of them and at this point i'm leaning toward not investing in the latest portables.
The original Nomad is pretty ugly for present times. I think this was the best way to resurrect the Nomad. I still can't get over that we got 2 Nomads in 2009. I'm still speechless.
I don't know about that. These new portables certainly look nice, but I am pretty happy with my Nomad. Ive been playing it everyday lately. It is a little on the big side, but it is very comfortable to hold, and the D-pad and six button layout is perfect. Throw on a little screen magnifier and the ghosting and blurring issue really seems to go away completely. Nomad Rocks! I like it bc its a real deal Sega product, and it feels exactly like the real hardware bc, it is. You can always send it away to be modded as well, with the screen mod you can extend bat life. Tru gangsters can probably hack a nicer screen in there and slim it down a little. One day I might get a gen mobile just for the hell of it though.
Nomad rocks.
Especially with a screen mod to give you about 10 hours of battery life if you got your 3000 mAh rechargeable batteries...
Perfect dpad and button placement, bigger screen, no emulated sound, stereo sound out of the head phone jack...and you glue the Super Wide Gear to it (ghetto style!)
I like my shoes to say Nike. Not Nikee. I like to have my shirts say Polo. Not Pollo. I like my soda to say Dr. Pepper. Not Dr. Thunder. I like the real deal. Nomad baby.
I guess this is what they mean when they call people purists. :)
Yo Kyud, U gotz to keep dat shit pure! On tha real sun, Word life 2 yor mutha!
