The Model 1 is better not just because it looks better but you can go to the menu and just press open tray instead of having to get up and press the eject button on the console.
I thought the second model was better, but now that I have the first model, I change my mind. It is so cool that you can open and close the disc tray with the controller, and it looks better too! It seems to work fine to me, so I think it is reliable.
Yep, that is artistic technology at it's finest.
The X'eye way cooler than both Model 1 & 2 combined :p
Model 1 looks a lot better than the garbage can appearance that the Model 2 has. I like the way the Model 1 looks better, but the Model 2 is much more reliable.
Very true should I add the X'eye and the CDX to the poll??
Yeah, that would be good, since both of them are unique. But if you do that, than I vote CDX. That has the best version of the disc drive, a locking spindle.
I have only played on a Mega CD 2 but the first model is way, way cooler and that's why I'm searching for one so I think that my vote goes to Mega CD 1.
1 is cooler: wish I'd kept the one I bought brand new back in the day--my replacement used one is having issues.
Yes add Xeye and CDX to the list... My vote is the CDX!!!
Small, compact, light weight. And slightly faster load times because of the new bios!!!
Umm, you still have to get up to change the game, unless you're sitting right in front of the system/tv. In which case you might as well press a damn button to pop the lid open.
I prefer the Model 2, because I just like top-loader disc systems better.
I dunno. My X'Eye sounds the same as the Model 2 Genesis I was using prior Better, in some cases.
The model II Genesis also has the ASIC clone chip. Get the early model I!
Yeah, listen to this to see how much better the Model 1 sounds in comparison to the Model 2. Model II and X'eye sound similar because they run mostly the same hardware.

X'eye sounds slightly better than a model 2 actually. I made some recordings a while back when I first met TmEE over at spritesmind.
Will see that I can upload a comparision asap.
If you do add entries to the list, reset the poll as I'd want to change my vote. I'd have voted for the CDX, but it wasn't up there, so I went with the Model 2.
Yep, X'eye sounds better than a model 2 although still not as good as a model 1: http://www.mediafire.com/file/nwtn4xgibmk/SoR2 comparision_xeye.ogg
Although recorded more than a year ago (before I joined these forums), I used the same equipment as with the model 1 recording. The model 2 recording was made by Night Driver a few days ago: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showpos...0&postcount=45
Umm, Zebbe, you do realize that it's NOT the ASIC at fault in the shitty sound? It's the circuitry around it. My CDX's sound is VERY clear, doesn't sound like my static-filled Genesis 2s at all. In fact, it has some of the clarity of TmEE's Audio Mod, though not as clear. The audio output is a little quiet, however. I'm not at my house right now, but when I get back, I'll record Thunder Force II MD running on the CDX. It's got none of the crap coming out of the Genesis 2's sound output.
Oh, and please do a recording of Streets of Rage 2's Go Straight! - I'm collecting recordings of this track on all MD variants ^ ^
Ace, that's what I was thinking, though I didn't know the CDX had a cood audio circuit. (I wonder if there're all like that) Is it about the same as the VA-3 Model 2? (I can't remember if this was mentioned before either, but is the VA-4's about the same as well?)
I like the M1 for the look and the cool start-up screen/bios. (great music and demo)
If the Model 2 had had a locing spindle and similar (or similarly interesting demo, the music was alright) and maybe been a bit more compact or stylish, I'd be more inclined to go with the model 2, but otherwise I really like the M1.
The CDX is definitely nice, and for the compact size, spindle and 32x compatibility (lid can open) it's got a lead over the X'Eye (and wondermega); if the audio quality is true for all CDXs/Multimegas, that's a plus too. (if it had looked a bit less like a portable CD player and had all the a/v+power connections on the back it would be even better, and of course it lacks the cool demo of the US M1)
My CDX audio is hooked through a VCR into my computer's line in. It sounds as good as audio playing straight off the computer. Considering the CDX was designed to be a portable CD player, I'd say the audio circuitry in the CDX is better than in any other model SEGA.
Xeye, then model 2, then model 1, yeah.
@ChillyWilly: Please do a recording of your CDX playing Streets of Rage track 00 (Go Straight, level 1 BGM) if possible. Then we'll know for sure.
Streets of Rage 2 was released on cartridge and any sound difference will only be noticable on the actual FM part, not the CDDA playback.
Other than Streets of Rage 2, we used Golden Axe (Death Adder, Wilderness), or Ristar (Intro).
Well, it does. There is one case where they fixed a bug which causes the games that exploit this bug not to work as they're supposed to (Afterburner was effected IIRC). Other than that Sega's clone itself is superior to the Yamaha original. It's the audio mixing circuit that ruins it.
Wait, wait, wait. What bug are you talking about? And how is After Burner affected by it(this is the Genesis After Burner II you're talking about, right?)?
And as Christuserloeser said, when properly amplified, the YM2612 in an ASIC sounds CLEARER than the real YM2612. TmEE's Audio Mod circuit is enough proof of how clear the ASIC-based YM2612 sounds like.
VA3s and VA4s sound exactly the same as they use the exact same sound circuit, but the CDX uses a completely different one that has clearer sound, but that's not as loud.
I am not sure if it's actually a bug. They've discussed it at spritesmind, but HardwareMan's uploads for comparision are offline.
EDIT: http://www.mediafire.com/?ogbdy2ndmig - Tiido's CCAM (old version) vs HWM's model 1
CDX > SCD1 > SCD2 > X'Eye
If counting foreign consoles, the good Wondermega (not the fugly X'Eye equivalent) would likely be ahead of the CDX/Multi Mega, but I've never played one so I can't say for sure. The S-Video and audio options would likely trump the CDX's discman feature and convenience.
I have only ever had a CD2 but since it is more reliable it wins in my book although if the CDX was an option I'd go for it-thats my next cd model it sounds nicely improved and is unique as others have said. THought about an xeye but dont really care for another asic clone setup (will have that in my genesis 2)
I also like the CDX the best because it is a Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and a Discman combined. (Plus it looks cool :D )
I chose the 2nd model since that model is more reliable, reads CD-R's better (from what I've heard), and looks fine on both versions of Genesis. (It also has the least amount of votes :P . The first model does look cooler, though)
Okay, burned Streets of Rage 2 onto the flash cart. Here's an ogg of BGM 00 recorded at quality level 9 (320 kbps). Remember, this is my CDX through a VCR to the computer. Given that, it sounds excellent to me... no hiss, nothing odd. If you want something other than ogg, let me know.

The more you know :). Thanks.
I own 2 Sega CD model 2s, model 1 might only interest me if it include that karaoke add-on.
Everyone wants me to reset the poll but how do u do it
