I was playing Shining Force CD about a Half hour ago and all of a sudden my Sega CD just freezes so I restart it and now when ever i start it theres no music no Sega logo or Sega Cd logo and the ready and access lights don't even turn on all it shows is the background can anyone help me?
I would say start the troubleshooting. Clean the contacts of the Genesis, then the board inside the CD.
Clean everything very well, laser, disks, contacts and connectors. Unfortunately Sega used boards and edger connectors instead of hard wiring everything. Has to be taken apart to do the inside contacts.
mine is on the fritz and i'm trying to get it working so i can sell my whole sega rig. Unfortunately i can't post a new topic yet
So it displays the bakground for the bios screen but nothing else? That's rather odd...

I just realized mie crashed in a very simmilar manner, except that it boots fine, but gets funky graphical glitches after running for 5-10 minuts, and then crashes after hitting reset or turning the console on/off. Same thing happens after hitting reset (and ejecting the tray) a couple time. Games will at least play though and unlike yours the ready lite always lights up, but not the red access light. (having it off for 15-30 minuts "resets" the issue so to speak)
Considdering the same thing happens if you boot with the mainboard to CD drive ribbon cable dissconnected (static screen, ready light only), I think it's may cable that's the problem. Perhaps the temporary functionality is due to partially working contancts that have borderline high resistance, and maybe build up some charge or something until it's non-functional. I need to try cleaning/polishing the ribbon contacts (the cable looks okay overall, save for a small pinch over one wire that doesn't look to have broken the wire)
The drive is a bit noisy too (gears grinding like its trying to push the sled pas the stop), but it works fine, and I've heard of plenty of other old disc drives that behave similarly and work fine. (my only worry is stripped gears)
I'd like to know what happened or anything you did, too.
kool kitty, open that beast up for a lube job with lithium grease quick like. Stripped gears are a bad thing.
A model 1? you'd be better off throwing it in the garbage than trying to fix it. It's not worth the hassle.
There should be a new rule at Sega-16 so that people suggesting the above could be banned immediately.

I was sitting at CVS and then I started to realized that a ribbon came out so I plugged it back in still so I cleaned everything put it all back together and it worked first try.

Just checked and my butt feels fine, and I just cannot stand wastefulness.
Nice, mine had the cable disconnected when it arrived in the mail and unlike yours the ready light did come on, perhaps a different cable. (mine was the long one going from the mainboard to CD Drive, was yours the other one connecting to the main board) There still seems to be that other problem with mine kind of crashing after a while, but hopfully that's just related to the cable.Quote:

Same here I never abused it and I went as far as not even letting a game inside of it during downtime and the only problem with it now is that if I hit the reset button it ejects fine but when i put the game in and hit reset it goes in half way stops then goes in fully then pops back out but if I just do it from the music menu no problem what so ever and thats good seeing how my reset button is broken.Quote:

As to the tray, mine does the same thing (even when it's working for the first few minuts), the tray starts closing and then hesitates about 1/2 way in and ejects. (or stops completely if my system crashes/dies at just the right time) I think the reset is meant only for ejecting, not closing, or maybe they're just touchy. Try giving the tray a nudge to retract rather than hitting reset. (just a little push like is usual to do with any tray loader)
And nathan any tips on greasing/lubricating these other than Lithium (ie application or if other lubes like silicone based or vasaline or mineral oil)?
And it's just the laser assembly gears grinding when it resets itsself at booting, the tray mechanism is perfectly fine, smooth and fairly quiet. (other than the above oddity)
Well, I haven't used anything but lithium grease but I have heard good things about some lighter silicones and also mineral oil. Vasaline is not really that good because it's very thick and can cause the motor to drag(in theory). Maybe somebody else has had better luck, but like i said I've never tried it.
Weird thing, one time my hand slipped and I dropped the whole CD mech, but that made it stop grinding even more and worked better afterwards. So check all the alignments of the gears, make sure they're not a bit crooked.
So just apply lube to the surface/teeth of the gears?
Yes, wherever the gears mesh. You can sometimes find old lube bunched up where they stop traveling. It's pretty easy once you have it all open (I'm sure you see this already). But that's it, just lube the teeth.

By "cage" do you mean that overhanging clip-like thing with the magnetic ring that locks the spindle into place?
Perhaps you could find someone with a scrapped M1 CD that could sell/give you the spare part?
I hesitate to suggest this, but you might want to considder PMing Diosoth about this as he recently scrapped his M1, but seems to have kept some of it as spare parts.
Good luck getting one for parts - people are throwing them in the trash ;) I pm'd him back in June and asked what he wanted for it and that I'd payshipping on top of it, but he never replied. Oh well..
When the drawer closes, the lens and motor lift up and that magnetic piece and the spindle hold the CD in place. There's a round plastic piece inside of a cage underneath the tray at the front of the drive that turns and as it turns, it causes the lens mechanism to lift up. The cage on mine has broken away from the steel plate that is the main frame of the drive and as the piece turns, it slips out of it's runner and doesn't lift the motor/lens up.
Hope that makes it more clear. I think I'll post pics when I fix it.

hey i could use some advice with my model-1 when playing lunar last week it made some gear slippage noises. i cleaned them and put some oil on them (gonna get some lithium grease) but i also screwed up the drive tray, i did not break anything but i could use some advice on how to re align the drive tray. also how successful is lithium grease at stopping slippage when it first starts? i also have a second model 1 on the way in apparent working order to my house. was wondering if i should carefully clean and grease the drive gears as soon as i get it or any other other maintenance that i should do to keep them both in working order? I want to continue playing lunar via my custom component output box =D. (custom cable to jrok RGB to component coverter board. ive been meaning to put together an instructables guide or somthing. as its an easy way to get component output on the cheap)
