Here's the real question: Why does it claim to work with the model 3? It makes me a little more skeptical about the whole thing. Better yet, does having a Y-output really warrant true stereo output. I can do the same with my Mono DVD player or VCR, but the sound would just not cut it.
Wow! They do sound different even on a muddy sounding youtube video (not sarcastic)!
Still, I think it is like comparing a CD to an old cassette. (Has anyone tried to record a "High Def" model with a tape and then tried it on a model 2? ;))
The Genesis 3 puts mono on both the mono pin and the left (I think) stereo pin so as to be compatibile with the stereo A/V cables. (the R audio pin is left unconnected)
And no, using a y/splitter cable to plug mono into both stereo jacks on TV/stereo system, won't make stereo, it'll just output the same mono signal through both ports.
Here are the AV pinouts:

I already knew about the shitty music from later Genesis 1 systems. My Late '92 Genesis had massive distortion on Level 6 in SOR1. Whereas the Genesis 1 I modded is an earlier model, and has cleaner sound.
There is a difference. Not enough to really bother me. I was expecting it to be a lot worse, with the way everyone has been carrying on about the model 2 sound. I agree with Joe, too. I was screaming "get on with it!" after the 2 minute mark.
What happened to all the labeling on the 2nd Genesis?
I never took the time to nitpick the sound from my Nomad; does anyone know if it has the same sound issues as the Model 2?
I'm testing a Nomad right now, and I can confirm it *DOES NOT* have the same bass distortion as my late release Model 1.
Yes, but this is definitely not the case for the Genesis (inless you're using mono AV cables or a Genesis 3 -which is mono only and still won't be the case of a y-cable/splitter) Note, I'm not talking about the headphone y-cable (1/8" phono to dual/stereo RCA adaptor, this is genuine stereo output -hence the 3 seperate contacts -devided by 2 bands, on the phono jack)
As shown in the above diagram, the Model 2 features both mono and stereo pins (3 pins for audio on the connector).
Don't get me wrong, I actually believe you. I just really had never used these sterero av cables for my model 2. Being my favorite model (I have three) I should really get these cables now. I guess I've been playing my model 3 for far too long. It's time to box it and get back to one of my model 2s. (Maybe my model 1).
Like Jesse mentioned, Road Rash isn't exactly the best example...

In my opinion, Nomad has the very best sound of all MD/G hardware variants, except for a HDG Model 1. I will see that I can upload a comparision soon.
You should also take a look at the motherboards of your M2's, if it's a VA-0 or VA-1, you've got the poor audio (though moddable for great sound), with a VA-3/4 you're good already, with a VA-2 you're good except the volume of the PSG sounds are off compared to the FM synth channels. (no mod as of yet)
Also check for the video encoder chip, if it's a Samsung KA2195D, youre screwed (very distorted video and cannot be modded to output S-Video), any other and you should be good. If it's a Sony CXA1645, that's great, very clear and bright output and very simple to mod for S-Video. (I beleive all VA-4 boards have this and some VA-3's)
