When you buy Genesis games, do you only buy them CIB for a complete collection, or do you take the cheaper, easier, more compact shortcut by collecting loose carts? Me, I collect them loose because I usually threw out the boxes as a kid, so if I collected CIB it still wouldn't be a complete collection from when I was a kid.
for the most part I try get my Genesis and Master System games w/ CIB or boxed, i do have some loose ones though most of which are from when I first started collecting.
Strictly Very Good-to-Mint CIBs over here; sealed/New preferred. I also have a large Loose cartridge collection, but I've recently vowed never to purchase anything less than Mint CIB. In fact, when I think of my Genesis collection, only my CIB games come to mind.
P.S.> I guess I was a neater "kid" back then. I never discarded my boxes or manuals, I didn't even break away the hanging tab. I also kept my console boxes. And this was before I even learned of the notion of collecting video games. But then again, I never broke my toys, or ate/drank near my games, or even threw a tantrum at the difficulty of the game to break what belonged to me. Perhaps this has a lot to do with my nurturing.

I buy loose for a number of reasons:
1. Junk stores usually never have the game with its box.
2. It's easier to store a cartridge without a box.
3. I usually never had the game with its box when I was a kid.
4. I just want to play the game. Nothing else is necessary to play the game when you have online guides.
Currently, I only have one game box and two game manuals.
Loose, but if I can get the boxes and instructions for cheap, I will.
Some rare games are incredibly expensive when boxed, but much cheaper with just the cartridge. My whole point in collecting is so that I have a large library of games to play, and I seldom if ever read the manuals or anything anyways. I actually have quite a few boxes of course, but I am not picky. With cheaper games, I find it doesn't make a difference, and I'll usually swing the extra buck or so for a case just out of principle.
I just recently got back in to collecting genesis games and I've been going for cib.....Problem is, the boxes are old and just dont look right when they are on a shelf with dvd and blu ray cases. 2nd, I love the look of the cartridges and I am seriously considering going with some type of display case that would show only the top of the cartridges and ditch the box with the hefty price. I could care less about manuals.
PS, those genesis boxes are huge and take up a lot of space.....
Nowadays it's boxed or nothing, unless I'm getting a really good deal on a loose cart *eyes the perfect condition cartridge of gunstar heroes I got for $3 off ebay*
On Ebay and on these boards there are a lot of inserts/manuals that show up and I've gotten most of my collection up to boxed status through those means.
I would say about 1/3 of my Genesis collection is boxed/CIB, but it really comes down to price. Most of my reason for collecting is to legally own the rights to the games so no one can say I can't emulate them. I think at some point when money permits I'll go back and have a giant archive of mint games, but not until I'm done with the overinflated goddamn mechanical engineering curriculum and then the (I'm sure) overinflated intellectual property law curriculum.
Only about 10 of my 86 Genesis games are boxed, none of my 32x games are boxed, but all of my Sega CD games are. I almost always buy loose, I don't really mind. But I do like the way a CIB game looks on the shelf.
When I go retro game shopping, I don't even bother looking at the loose cartridges. Only a small number of my Genesis games are loose, and those will be replaced (and, let's face it, probably discarded) once I track down their CIB counterparts.

Genesis is one system I don't care about. I didn't care when I was a kid, hell I lost manuals! Some games it'd be nice, like a fighting game for move lists or an odd, complex game like Herzog Zewi. So for fighting games, I would like a manual, and won't buy unless I can get a manual.
But I got a CB Herzog Zewi MINT!!! for like $3... HELL NO I didn't pass it up.
Other systems I buy/collect for after the Genesis, I want complete games even if I never look at the manual! I have 90+ Dreamcast games CIB, and all but like one or two Saturn games CIB, out of 80 and they are common/cheap games.
I pretty much always try and get the box. They're easier to organize compared to cartridges, which tip over if lined up on a shelf or if stacked on top of each other become a problem when you want a game at the bottom of the stack.
I have a few cart-only games from when I first started and just wanted a few games to play, but everything since then has been CIB. And I'm working on replacing them with CIB copies.
CIB. Obviously, I bought them new back when the system was alive and well. Later, when EB and Gamestop sold Genesis games after the system was dead, it was hit or miss with me. If I wanted it and had the cash, I grabbed it whether it was complete or not. But these days, it's CIB or nothing.

As for me, I'll collect them loose (will CIB if for good price), even with torn labels and all, why, cause they are cheap and I want to enjoy playing the game more than looking at a box! I've just started up collecting again because I bought a SNES, which made me pull out my Genesis again! I didn't even realize I want more games on the Genesis than on the SNES!! My best local find for the Genesis over the last couple weeks has been Castlevania: Bloodlines Loose with worn label, pretty cool game!
AD2101 - Uhhhhggg, I hate you, I'd take a loose messed up copy of Gunstar Heroes for $3, can't find that game anywhere for cheap, even loose they all are going for $15+.

When I started collecting in the late 90s, I only bought CIB. Then I sold my stuff for money. When I started re-collecting around 2005, I bought loose, since they were cheap and plentiful, and CIB when I came across it. Then I realized I hated buying loose, and only buy CIB now. No more loose for this guy.
Edit: right now, my collection is roughly 50/50 loose/CIB...

Complete or nothing for me. I won't even bother to look through games that don't come with the box. And if the instructions aren't included, back it goes.

CIB or DIE! 100% of my games are CIB and I NEVER buy games that miss either the box or the manual. If a game comes with a map, strategy guide or something else, I must have it too.
CIB is the way to go. I will buy loose games like a few years ago I found a loose copy of Shining Force 2 for like 4.95 so I had to scoop it. One thing I hat is those crappy cardboard boxes and xerox manuals that Sega used during the later days of the Genesis. It's not easy to keep that shit in mint condition. Nor is it easy for Sega CD and Saturn games. :(
CIB unless it something lie Phantasy Star, Musha, etc. I have also have the habit of buying boxes ans sleeves off of Ebay from time to time when it something good so I can piece a complete game in box game together.
I have a lil from Column A and lil From Column B. If I can get CIB I will go for that over loose

As long as it has the box, manual or not. The manuals have 50-50 chance of being in there (I assume we're talking about random finds). Maybe one day I'll go on a manual buying spree. What a waste that'll be. Maybe you can find manual scans somewhere?
My personal collection is half and half. I just want to play the games so I have never cared except for certain titles. I wanted a complete Gunstar, so when I had the chance I jumped at it.

Well, I buy the games for collection and rarely play my vintage titles. So CIB is a must for me, preferably in mint or new/sealed condition if I can find it.
I don't get why people do that. The vast majority of mine have the box and booklet, but only by pure chance. The only time I'd really like the box and booklet (particularly the booklet) is if I'm getting some RPG game or something, with gameplay that may not be straightforward. The booklet comes in handy in these situations.Quote:
