Couldn't believe there wasn't a thread about this, but here it is. Died yesterday from a heart attack. The man responsible for my favorite movie of all time (Ferris Bueller's Day Off), and many other great films. He will be missed.

Terrible news! Yet this will still be eclipsed by MJ :(
I think this is a MUCH bigger loss than MJ. MJ made a few popular albums, but Hughes made films that defined a generation of Americans.
Oh wow, that blows. I enjoyed most of John Hughes' movies and collaborations, he did some of the best eighties comedies.
He hadn't driected anything in quite a while, but he'll be missed! :(

No it isn't. MJ may have been "god" to a small segment, but he really wasn't much more than the Brittany of his time... which was over years ago. Believe or not, MJ wasn't popular with the majority of people... no musician is or ever will be. People's taste in music varies too much. Let's not forget that the Thriller dance is *IN* "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (how's that for linking the two subjects together?).
Yes John Hughes was a great film maker... But a big difference between Him and MJ is... You have to EXPLAIN who John Hughes was... MJ needs no explanation. (you know that Thriller album guy)
MJ had no impact on anything outside of pop music. That's why at his greatest, his fanbois only proclaimed him the "King of Pop"... because he certainly was NEVER King of any other genre. Outside of pop music, he's a five second parody in the latest comedy TV show or movie.Quote:

Firstly I'm a MASSIVE John Hughes fan, and not really much of an MJ fan...
However if we're going to have a big dick contest over market penetration, ask anyone outside the US who John Hughes is and 90% of the time you're stared at blankly, even mentioning films he has made/been involved with wont get you far unless you mention Home Alone.
Mention Michael Jackson anywhere on the planet and everyone knows who he is and can specifically name tracks.
John Hughes was a genious and a god in my eyes but theres no way in hell I'm going to try and perpetuate the idea that he is as well known or more significant than Michael Jackson in worldwide terms.
In terms of sheer popularity, sure MJ wins, but in terms of quality we all know Hughes reigns supreme.
