I am very jealous of you guys. My local PNT (Alameda, CA) is terrible for retro games. They have no genesis at all and just have a couple dozen beat up NES/SNES/N64 carts.

Play N' Trade isn't going out of business, are they? Stores were closing down here where I'm at. The only thing I ever got was a few GG games for $1 each. Not really a great deal, but one was a Japanese cart - which was interesting to find there.
Ever since I started frequenting the local PnT, I keep finding better and better stuff:
Congo Bongo (loose, Atari 2600): $4.99
Vectorman 2 (loose, 1998 Majesco reprint): $2.99
Choplifter (complete, Master System): $2.99
Mega Bomberman (loose w/label damage): $2.99
Cool Spot (boxed no manual, MD/G): $2.99
Due to constant sales on MD/G games, the following games were COMPLETELY free:
Sonic 3 (loose): originally $4.99
Shaq-Fu (loose, MD/G): originally $0.99
Virtua Racing (boxed no manual): originally $0.99
World of illusion (boxed no manual): originally $2.99
At the local PnT, they think of MD/G games as dirt and they are eager to get rid of them for as cheap as possible. Most MD/G titles cost even less than NES titles. Heck, Atari 2600 games cost more!
Meh, I like both the Geneis and 32x versions, 32x is nice for the bonus stuff added to the Arcade original. I got a loose cart of Ebay for $.99 plus shipping. (which added up to ~$3.00 iirc)
As for P&T the only notable deal I've gotten was a loose copy of Kolibri for $.99, alogng with VR Deluxe for $.99 as well, but that's closer to the standard price for that. I passed on Shadow Squadron as it was listed for $7.00 and I don't have a 32x yet. Prices were pretty reasonable in general though, except for obviously desirable games like R-Type 3 and Mega Man X II/III. Picked up Ecco loose for $1.99. (Super Mario Kart was fairly reasonable at ~$10, I think it was marked down form $14) I mentioned it before, but this P&T had stuff from pretty much every mainstream system except Atari (and no 3DO either), every Sega System released in the US though. All the retro stuff was locked in 2 glass display cabnets. (including a few DreamCast games)
We don't have Play N Trade around here, only a monopoly of GameStop. There's a GameStop on every corner.
truth be told, the distributors suck and most people that open them are borderline retarded. I could find almost any accessory on eBay or another deal site cheaper than we could get them from the distributor, sometimes almost half the price! The only reason Gamestop is profitable is because they have a super-efficient structure and they are their own distributor so they cut out a huge middle man that way. Also, all of these self-righteous people that say "you deserve more for your games!" don't realize Gamestop gives what they give because they really can't afford to give more and stay in business.
that's because the PNT pricing guide is dogshit for anything but current gen games. It literally just says "$4.99 for NES, $5.99 for SNES, $2.99 for Genesis". Only well known valuable games like Mario games, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Contra, etc. ever really get priced more than that. Couple that with brain dead employees that know nothing of the market and frankly don't give a shit, and you get retro bargains all around.
To add-on to that...
1). Video games are a product that sells itself.
2). Employee knowledge isn't going to get the product off of the shelves any faster than it already does.
3). Game stores will go broke if they sell retro games at a full market price since retro gamers are usually cheap.
Shaq Fu, The Rocketeer and SSW Return of the Jedi all for 99 cents each.
I sure hope that's not true, that one off Capitol in San Jose had a nice selection when I went there and pretty reasonable prices. Got ~$50 woth of games, a couple N64, Genesis, and one GC and another SNES for my birthday. Only one guy there but he was helpful.
Hmm, it is a franchise, right? So it could vary by place to place. The one I went to had pretty varied pricing, more or less matching a lot of online sales prices. Super Mario Kart was $14, common games were cheaper, R-Type 3 was pretty price, something over $30, close to that for Mega Man X-2 and more for X-3, ~$4 for Zelda II (a bit worn though) and generally fitting varied prices on NES games. Goldeneye was $7 iirc, but that was marked down. Rogue Squadron and BFN were mid range as well, both around $10 I think. Sega CD games were in th eteens I think, except for a couple poorer ones like Power rangers, but I didn't really notice that much. Virtua Racing for 32x was $1, Shadow Squadron was $7 but Kolibri was only a dollar, so they missed on that, but it did get me to buy it. ;)
Genesis games varied as well, Ecco was $1.99 Sonic 2 was $2.99 (loose) and the boxed ones were a few dollars more, also depending on if there was a manual. Sports games were usually dirt cheap. They had SMS, GG, Saturn, and DC games too but I didn't check the prices.
Also I must say they're good about not putting stickers over cart labels, all on the edge or top in the N64's and 32x's cases.
At my local Play 'n Trade, the only one here in Vegas in fact, I got:
Mazin Saga for Genesis (loose, $5)
Primal Rage for 32X (loose, $3)
Knuckles Chaotix for 32X ($20)
I still have more credit saved in their computer system from my recent trade in with them.
I recently learned that there's a PNT 15 minutes away from me. I don't have a car at college, though, so it's kind of tough to get there. I called them and the guy said that they carry Genesis and nintendo games, so I really would like to go.
I seem to have a lot more luck with accessories there than anything else. It's nice to be able to molest the controllers through the plastic wrap and figure out which ones are worth buying.
I also made the mistake of buying one of those clone NES pads that a lot of retro stores like to carry AND the really crummy "multi-purpose AC adapter". The thing actually doesn't feel that bad but the one I had was wired so pressing A would also trigger B. I think I've read on here about people trying out the shitty 3-in-1 AC adapter, harmful to the Genesis it supposedly supports and flickers on the NES.
But Play N Trade definitely does customer service right, I was able to return those for full cash with no trouble whatsoever. They're also very courteous and will gladly look out for things if you ask them to do it (such as SEGA Saturn goods or other things that may not show up as often). Of course it's a franchise and employees rotate so there's no guarantee, but they must pump some kind of laughing gas/other dubious substance into my local store. Strangely upbeat morale!
