$85 is a bit steep. This might make sense for a more scarce game, but Sonic 3 isn't particularly hard to find.
$85 for a sealed Gunstar Heroes or Knuckles Chaotix maybe, but not Sonic 3.
I watched one go for over $100 on the bay with the plastic in worse shape then mine.
That's what I based my price on. A poorly pictured one went for over $60 recently too

It sold for $65.
The previous one sold for around $100, but that seller had many other sealed listings at the same time. That often inflates the final price.
Sealed collecting is very prevalent in the Nintendo NES scene, though I have a few I picked up on the cheap, I typically wont pay the 200-500% or more mark up for them.
To each there own I guess.
Nah, even if you did purchase it for the price you're selling, you will have quite a long wait until someone purchases that. Sonic 3 is pretty common and considering the game's length, sealed or not i personally wouldn't buy it. I'll probably just tear it open from urge. If it was rare, then yeah ok. But Sonic 3? Nah. Maybe for $34.99 (although we don't use US currency where i live).

I say this only because being still somewhat new to selling stuff I've gotten complaints from people about prices being too high, despite the fact I seriously doubt they've ever seen or have been offered a copy of the thing before(Super Mario World 64 for example :P)
You might want to try Amazon. I sold a sealed MKII for $40 there. I put it up thinking no one in their right mind would buy it but I was $60 cheaper than the other sealed copy.

As a sega sealed pro collector i can tell you that Sonic 3 clamshell edition sealed is rare (i am watching these auctions for years). It very rarely pops up on ebay and is quite sought after among sealed collectors (i think i saw it 3 times maybe). Actually i can say it's MOST RARE among all sonic genesis games. So it's awesome thing to own.
Sonic 2 is most common, Sonic 1 was rare, but with Dov's sales it's not rare anymore... :)
I hate sealed games. They are good for selling I guess. Its neat to have them but I can't bring myself to opening them. If I can't open them what is the point. It seems odd anyone would want any Sonic that much. More rare or not Sonic 3 is by no means a rare game. Many people don't even really like it all that much.
