What's the deal with Sonic going out of the spindash when he starts falling? One of the best parts of the Genesis games was launching up into the air and staying there for a while, and Sonic didn't flail his arms like a pansy when he fell either. Oy vei!

Nexus is obviously draws from Sonic CD in several respects (and the only homebrew to use sonic boom rather than Toot Toot Sonic Warrior for invincibility or speed up), but it's XG that really looks modern graphically, better than Sonic 4 in several respects IMO.
XG is pretty much a de facto Sonic 4, starting where 3&K left off (overlapping the 3&K end boss actually). Hence Sonic "Extra Genesis."
On top of that the music sounds off, even compared to many other recent sonic games (well, some of those in Rush are pretty off -maybe Rush Adventure too)
But not just that, but the compositions themselves aren't necessarily bad, but the instruments in the arrangements are more to blame. A few remixes have shown otherwise (especially the SMPS soundfont one), but it wouldn't have to use Genesis sounds to be "right" either IMO, just somethign different from what they did. (plenty of other instruments they could have used that would fit better -even general midi stuff)
XG I like to call Xtreme Explosion edition, and I don't think it looks that impressive, really.

The only obvious thing that gets me is the solid tunnel walls (can't see sonic spinning though them), I'm not sure if that's just an unfinished portion or an actual art choice.
The music isn't traditional sonic style, but at the same time, it at least feels OK, not off like many of the arrangements Sonic 4 has.
Nexus's music might be more fitting: it's definitely reminiscent of some Sonic CD tracks. (at least the North American ones)

Nexus is NEVER going to be finished. Also, what do you mean XG is not free? There's no indication of such a thing. Heck Sega will fiercely strike down with their legal hammer if anyone attempts to make money of their #1 franchise.

It just dawned on me: What if SEGA really just wanted to measure the hype that would come out of their "hidden platform" statement? Everyone knew it was the iPod and related hardware; but, even then, many of us, if not most, regarded it as a possible introduction to Sega's next console. It's so obvious now. Sega knew it was the iPod from the start. And I highly doubt it was a matter of their acquisition of rights to publish for the iPod. It may have been a "pre-marketing" scheme of sorts to see what the public would really make out of a "hidden platform." Anyways, that's my Sega conspiracy theory of the day. What do you guys think? Not just that, but I think it's a bit stupid on Sega's part.
Sega's first 3rd party platform since their entrance in the home console market, and the first for them to throw away apparently. (I say since home console because Sega published some Atari and Coleco games in the early 80s)

The PC was the first major alternative platform they started releasing games for since the 2nd console console generation ended in the US... Most definitely the first they started porting major games from their home consoles to. (lots of arcade ports to home computers, PC/compatible -and several on the famicom- not sure how many, if any were actually published by Sega though; After Burner on the NES certainly wasn't)
It was their first big move into 3rd party development and publishing. I think Sonic CD may have been the first home port of a console exclusive published by Sega. (1995) I think also one of the few (if not the only) to run in 256 color mode and not have a pentium as the minimum requirement (iirc). Then came Garfield, Sonic3&Knuckles, and many more, including a slough of Saturn and dreamcast games.
:(Ok. So, I just had this epiphany: Sega should release Sonic the Hedgehog 4-Episode 1 as a hard copy. ;)
Alrighty, so I'm being half-sarcastic there, but the second half remains true to my feelings. :D
Here's why:
Already, as of late, there have been a ton of 2D Sidescrollers and the like released for the Wii and the PS2 that claimed their own hard copies (I'm thinking New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Odin Sphere, Astro Boy and Muramasa-Demon Blade atm). So, why wouldn't Sega want to bank in on that? They can make it a downloadable title later on for all I care. But, right now, I've noticed I'm not as stoked about Sonic the Hedgehog 4 as I am about going togamestopBest Buy or Toys R Us right now and buying myself my own copy of New Super Mario Bros Wii (which I don't have yet). And I'm not even that well versed in the Super Mario Bros. Universe. More than that, I can't wait till I get a copy of Muramasa and Grimm Grimmoire myself. And now that they've announced Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby's Epic Yarn (which undoubtedly will be hard copies at debut), I'm left wondering about just how exactly I really feel about Sonic the Hedgehog 4...
...I'm really REALLY REAAAALLY excited about Sonic 4, don't get me wrong. It's just that now it's beginning to feel a bit like I did when I bought Castlevania Rebirth and Contra Rebirth for my Wii. It just isn't the same. I'm stoked about Sonic 4 too, but I just don't want it to go down the same road as cheap, downloadable media. It'd be a shame for sure. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 deserves better than that Darn it!
....Lol. So now I'm thinking 2012. The end of the world is nigh and all "4" Episodes of Sonic 4 have been released. Sega decides to break out a compilation hard copy for all current platforms out there. We buy it. We cherish it for 1.23 secs, then the world collapses in its own excrement. Why Sega? Whyyyyy???
Anyways. Just a thought. But seriously, though. If not now, Sega, Please PLEASE PLEAAAAAAAAAAAASE make it a compilation hard copy at the end of this run. At least for us collectors. Think of the little children (we're all children inside;)).

^Well... At any rate, if it's true, then I sure hope Sega fixes the physics of the game as they've been promising. I'm not too fond of Sonic running slower than usual in a direct sequel to the 16-bit era or even halting midway through a jump if you don't keep pressing forward or back.
My impressions from that video is that, they may have made the jump a tiny bit less floaty, and made the wheel animation come out a bit more properly so you see it more often.
Still needs tons of work to make the game better.
No I don't like it, its like one of those bad romhacks where they replaced Sonic with their own creation.
And Sonic walking around with his arms dangling down like some emo kid bothers me very much, Cause thats just not Sonic.

That was an old video folks. You should keep more updated (just a couple of pages back we have more recent vids than that. ;))
Also, I've done my research and I couldn't find that stolen ROM anywhere (not that I ever download ROMs anyways, I was just looking to see if it was true). So, the verdict is as follows: If there was anything stolen from Sega concerning Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, then it was either just a couple of video footages of gameplay, or, at most, just the same Demo they must've shown at E3 2010 (Splash Hill Zone, Acts 1-3 and end-level boss). That means, not the complete game (and not the finalized physics either). Just google up some gameplay footage and I think Splash Hill Zone, Acts 1-3 and final boss is all there is (non-youtube-related, of course).
That video was E3, that's the latest build to my knowledge. It's certainly a bit different from other builds we've seen.

on the official website have Sega lowered the fidelity of the 1st level music (or rearranged it) so it sounds like a piece of MD music??? I seem to remember it sounding 'too modern' and am sure it's different now.
