Yeah, Sonic's legs need to circle like in the old games. :)
Other than that, it seems promising, but I'm still not holding my breath. Unless the guys at Sega actually broke out an old Genesis with Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles, then there might be a chance this will finally be good. :D
Ah, that's why he got his own website at Sega of Japan. =P
(Yes, I know he's more popular in the West, but I think some people tend to exaggerate that fact)
I have a bad feeling about this. They will screw it up. I already hate it as its only on consoles so far. I hate modern day consoles. Give it to us on the PC!
Nice looking game but again with that stupid Sonic design, when will they ever learn?
Here you go Sega, you seem to have forgotten what he's supposed to look like.

Saw that? okay now here's how he shouldn't look.

It's supposedly on iphone too
This was on the Sonicthehedgehog4.com website, but they took it down

Haha. Direct sequel to Sonic 3 & Knuckles? Episodic? Fuck that. It's like they're saying 'sorry for our previously 3D, big-budget, imaginative titles, here's recycled shit from a decade-and-a-half ago. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?'
Hey, if it weren't for Sega PC, I'd have hardly had any contact with any Sega games prior to them going 3rd party and releasing stuff for Nintendo consoles.
For the time, Sonic CD was a damn good port (in fact, I'd say it's the best actual port given that subsequent ports have been modified versios of the PC port with slightly degraded accuracy -and higher quality FMV)
The Sonic 3 & Knuckles releases were pretty good too (especially for the time), the midi is pretty good other than the replaced tracks in sonic 3. (doubtlessly soem probably prefer the replaced tracks -I don't persoanlly)
Then there's a few others liek Garfield and BUG!, but those aren't Sonic titles. (and others -starting with SA DX, were post Dreamcast)
I'm holding on to hope for this one.....If nothing else, just the fact that is has 4 at the end makes me smile.....Sonic Unleashed, minus the werewolf stages, was pretty damn good when it just concentrated on Sonic.......
Here's to hoping against hope....
Yeah, Sega Smash Pack Vol. 2 was one of my first exposures to Sega's software, back in the 90s. Not to mention Sonic CD, Sonic R, Sonic & Knuckles Collection, Garfield: CitA and a few others. Sega PC ruled!
The big-budget, imaginative titles have sucked for the most part. That's not any indication that this won't just because because it's not one of them, but at least it's a step back in the right direction. Imo.
I mean I'm fully convinced that this is gonna suck, but I wouldn't mind being proven otherwise.
Well, it doesn't looks super great, but it still looks a lot better than the shit they've been putting out since Sonic Adventure 2. I'm still very excited.
Steam plz.
If sonic is slow or whatever.. At least its a step in the right direction and being DL only it should be able to receive updates and tweaks.
To be frank, most of the Sonic fandom pisses me off. Everywhere I go, its the same damn comments, which are covered in that flowchart, which can be applied to this game.
Its not the end of the world if they release another crappy Sonic game, and if it turns out to be good, then its a good game, dammit. Sonic 1-3&K..........it was over 15 years ago man. Let it go. Pipe down, wait for the damn game to come out and play some "Super Thunder Blade" in the meantime, sheesh. :D
Yup.

The announcement of a new Sonic the Hedgehog game is always news, but with the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, the folks at Sega are taking a novel approach by marrying old-school Sonic gameplay and new-school delivery. Sonic 4 will be a 2D game with 3D visuals for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii and will be distributed as a downloadable game upon its release this summer. To learn more about what to expect from the game, we spoke with Sega associate brand manager Ken Balough.
Quote:
GameSpot: As far as gameplay goes, should we expect classic old-school Sonic 2D mechanics or something new added into the mix?
Ken Balough: All the Sonic favorites [are] here for sure! Spin dash, power sneakers, etc. But you will also see the homing attack added, and in true Sonic fashion, you can compete with your friends for the fastest level times through leaderboards.
So it has the homing attack. This will make the gameplay of Sonic 4 be compared very sharply to Sonic Megamix, as the only 16-bit (hack) title with the homing attack (that I'm familiar with anyway). If the homing in Sonic 4 is just like in Megamix, then people will say that Sega copied this awesome old hack. If the homing is different in Sonic 4, then people will probably find it less user-friendly, and inferior to that of Megamix!
I also agree that Sonic should look more like he used to, you know, in the original games that this is supposed to be a sequel to...
Bleh, I was hoping for straight up 2D. The enemies look nice but it's regretful they went with the "hip" Sonic redesign, so much for returning Sonic to his roots.
This just looks sort of like they were working on the next Sonic game for the DS or something and just decided to make it multiplatform and slap the 4 at the end to drum up hype amongst the older fans.
It looks promising IMO. I still and will forever hate the "new" Sonic look. I think that his trademark circle run will be in this game. Please Sega do not fuck this game up.
I didn't mind Sonic's revised look in the Dreamcast era, but the "new new" look that has him with really long legs is stupid.
And... this game looks and sounds stupid. This is coming from one of the few that didn't dislike Sonic Heroes. Pass.
I agree.
The DC look was good, the long legs look is dumb.
I dislike Sonic Heroes immensely, but I loved the Sonic Unleashed day levels, and I think pass as well.
But I can say for certain that I'll be buying it no matter what, and withhold final judgment until playing.
Cause, I decided to pass on Sonic Unleashed, and if I hadn't got it for free, from a friend, I would have never known how uber amazing and basically perfect it was. (sans Werehog, fuck that)
Glad he didn't have long legs like that in Unleashed so much.

Problem solved. :D
Nintendo sort of did it in Brawl. They did Sonic CDs figure 8 shape

The Sonic CD running animation was top tier.
It gave Sonic an animation for when he's running past his max speed.
Very cool.
OK, max reachable speed on flat ground without the help of boosts or powerups.
The fact that criticism has been reduced to mainly "Legs should move in circles" and "Sonic should look like he did in '91" is already very promising. With all the shitty Sonic games we've all had to endure since the Genesis, I'll take a different running style and a slightly updated Sonic any day. (Although I miss the old running style myself)
Does any company even still do hand drawn animation other than whatever is on the DS?
If the game looked like this, i'd be having wet dreams again.

Black eyes ftw!
I like green eyes more.... I got green eyes myself too :P
i still can't figure out how they can initially announce it as a return to sonics retro roots and then months later show a trailer with 3d vector renders instead of pixel art... Does everyone think they'll go the past sonic tune remix route to pull so more nostalgia strings?
I just love the fact that they decided to call it Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (albeit Volume 1). It definitely puts and end to the question: Was S&K Sonic 4? The fact is that Sonic 3 & Knuckles was one awesome game. The only complaint I have about this game is that it's being advertised as a downloadable title. I guess beggars can't be choosers. Lol.
You know I think the DC era stuff is OK (I know Tiido really likes the DC style Sonic box art), the long legged sonic is stupid looking though, I think the abomination that is STH06 epitomized that.
Also, that one sonic immage in the shouldn't collage towards the middle looks fairly close to the old sonic. (the JP one anyway, the US art tweaked it a bit more, let aloen the DiC stuff -which I am partial to admitedly -the DiC stuff, not so much the US/EU specific box art)
Yeah, I think 2006 was the peak of the weird lookign "new generation" Sonic. I', not sure about Secret Rings or Black Knight, but it wasn't that extreme in Unleashed. (and especially Brawl, I think he had the all black eyes there too -no iris)
Noting good can come from anything accurately associated with that term.
I think soem of the GBA or DS games have the strike/dash attack too. (and recall that the fire shield of Sonic 3/&K is kind of the precurser to that as well)
Yes, but another question is if it will feature the mobius strip animation (brawl does for certain thins) and the peelout. ;) (the latter would be quite controvercial) Wow, +1 for that. :D
How about remixing selected tracks from sonic 1, 2, 3/&K (including the suspected MJ tunes), Sonic CD (selected JP and US tracks), Chaotix (of course!), and soem of the 8-bit games. (obviosuly that's a ton of tracks, so you wouldn't take that many form each ;))
Or just screw it and have silpheed's (MCD) soundtrack for no good reason. (I say this because I once started up sonic PC while the Silpheed disc was in the drive, and thus some of the Silpheed bonus tracks played for some levels ;))
I think the music maybe all new in a kinda retro genesis style given this...

It's catchy I actually like it!
