I would mark out big time if the ???? turns out to be a release for the Dreamcast. :D
Will never happen, but would have been a great way for Sega to remember the DC.
It will probably turn out to be PSP or some phone release or something though..
It seems like damn near every classic sprite they use ends up severely misaligned when they animate them.
Do you want something new and interesting, or something that's basically not outside of your comfort zone? If your answer is the latter, fire up Sonic the Hedgehog on your Mega Drive and rest happy that You Are Playing The Original Game.
I like the 'lean and mean' look, I like the 'pudgy' 16-bit look, but fucking hell I want some evolution out of a game franchise that is nineteen years old this year, and not the exact same recycled material you're all apparently clamouring for.
Modern games are all brown Space Marine FPS', but mess with our beep boops and pixel sprites from 1991? Fuck. That. Shit!!
(Sonic the Hedgehog is available RIGHT NOW for 400 Microsoft Points!)
wow
SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (February 4, 2010) - SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced the latest game from the world's fastest hedgehog - Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I. Available exclusively via download, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I (previously known as Project Needlemouse) will bring back the addictive side scrolling action that Sonic fans love in an all-new 2D adventure.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I, the first Sonic game developed exclusively for download, brings back the adventure that Sonic fans have been waiting 16 years for. It will offer the classic Sonic moves that fans love including Spin Dash and Rolling Attack and will also feature Homing Attack, all in beautiful CG rendered environments. Packed with special stages, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I will take players through a variety of different Zones, inspired by the Genesis-era style. Longtime fans will not be disappointed as they face some intense boss battles against everyone’s favorite villain - the always devious and evil - Dr.Eggman.
'Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I features the classic Sonic gameplay style that the community has been asking for since Sonic and Knuckles,' said Sean Ratcliffe, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America,Inc. 'Thanks to emerging technologies, we are able to create all-new stunning Sonic worlds combined with Genesis-era Sonic gameplay and make it downloadable across multiple platforms.'
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I will be available in Summer 2010 for Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PSN, and WiiWare™.
An ironic statement coming from someone that (IIRC) went gaga for Mega Man 9. If our inferences are correct, Sonic 4 will do it the right way with a classic gameplay format utilizing beautiful 2.5D graphics. MM9 would've been OK if they would've done something new and different graphically, but it was just a phoned-in ROM hack-style affair but even less respectable because it wasn't even programmed like an NES game. I wouldn't mind seeing something like Super Paper Mario with the "twist the world and go 3D for a second" motif or something to that effect to spice things up and innovate. As long as it's fast running and not tedious item collecting and convoluted nonsense storylines I'm sold. I don't see what you can be complaining about when New SMB Wii turned out great with a return to classic form.
I do love the SA1 box arts.
The green eyes do work for Sonic too, and I didn't even notice or care until about Sonic 2006, when they just started to seem really weird to me for some reason.
Either way, the eyes aren't important.
The spinning legs need to make a comeback though.
It's too weird watching Sonic walk-run.
Yes some companies still do.

made "Wario Shake it" on the Wii

Way Forward
did the "A Boy and His Blob" remake on the Wii. Way Forward also does a bunch of 2D stuff on the DS.

Vanillaware
did Muramasa also for the Wii

I would love some 1080p 2D games done in the above styles.
Well, looks like they unlocked the intro for the game on the Sonic 4 website. That music on the Japanese website is pretty catchy by the way.
New character feature in 4 days, a new piece of concept art in about 6 days, new multimedia feature in about 13 days. Rest of the stuff doesn't have timers on it.
I like the timer thing, I think it makes things exciting!
The most exciting thing is the unannounced 4th platform. :D
It's the iphone
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...uy1/promo1.png
this was found on the www.sonicthehedgehog4.com website when it opened at 3am on the 4th but Sega removed it.
The iphone is probably the reason for the homing attack too.
Should have seen it coming... :(
PUT THIS GAME ON STEAM DAMNIT
If you put it on Steam, you have my money...
Perhaps the ??? is PC. ;)
If not I'll be dissapointed, PC is Sega's longest running 3rd party platform, other than the Wii exclusives, most of the newer sonic games (and compilations) have made it to PC too.
Why? Why does it have to be steam and not simply a generic PC download through Sega?
Wow, this actually looks like a decent game.
Okay, I'm taking back what I said about the title screen music; it sounds a lot better now that we get to hear the whole thing rather than the short clip that they hacked out of it. It still doesn't sound too great, but for that matter title screen music has never been the strong point of a Sonic soundtrack (the title themes from the classic games were all pretty mediocre in my opinion, even when every other track in the game was awesome). I'm willing to forgive a few cheesy faux-retro synths if they can put them to good use when it comes to the actual level music.
Those 2D games look awesome but that Wario game looks like it's cell shaded.
I agree about the hand drawn animation, would've been nicer, but whatever, you can't have everything. I'm still ridiculously hyped for this.
Because if it's on steam... it'll up forever! :p Well, maybe. Outrun 2006 was on steam, and now it is no longer on steam, liek wtf?
But really, I don't trust Sega to have the download through them for very long, or it'll be spotty. Now, Steam is pretty awesome.
Lol. Now looking back at my innicial response, I guess my hopes, and those of many here at sega-16, were answered indeed. Hehehe. Awesomeness!!! I can't wait for this game to come out. Lol.
Ehh, I dunno. "Sonic 4" at least looks a lot better than I had expected. But I'm not sold yet.
Sure it's nitpicking to point out small details like Sonic's weird green eyes, and his inability to do his classic circle-run. But on the other hand, this is supposed to be a direct sequel to the Genesis games, so the sharp comparisons are relevant and inevitable. Plus these small inaccuracies might add up to a troubled game, or one of the inaccuracies might be a fatal flaw. For example, if the game was great but they stuck in horrible voice samples for Sonic every few seconds, it would probably effectively ruin the game for me.
Sure they're all small details but this is supposed to be for people who are die-hard fans of the Genesis games, which were pretty simplistic games to begin with. The original formula can only be changed so much until it's broken!!!
They could have played it safe and just made a damn game the same way as the Genesis games, with actual hand-drawn art, and with Sonic looking similar to his Genesis sprites, etc. Why the hell not? They didn't have to tweak the classic formula; so far most (or all) of their attempts to do so have turned out BAD.
And Sega's drawn-out hype over the game is just annoying to me. They didn't do this shit for the Genesis games. They just showed samples of the games in TV commercials and magazine ads. Now we have Sega "News & Blogs" talking about cupcakes and telling us, "You're not dreaming." "Let the celebrations begin!"
Yeah man, but in 1994 we didn't have blogs, the internet barely existed. I'm sure if what we have now was around back in the 90's SEGA would be all over it, there would probably be even more online product pushing than they're doing now. They were on a massive advertising binge back then and it worked for them, they used every advertising means available.
Though, I do agree about the small details, they should've stuck as closely to the original games as possible. I think the main issue is the people that are Sonic Team now are not the same people that were Sonic Team in the 90s, hell it's been almost 20 years, some of those guys might be retired or dead by now. That having been said, the new team should've kept more authenticity. I think the major issue is they don't know what to do. Ie: they don't get the sort of feedback or ideas you see on this board. I think most of their feedback comes from the official SEGA site where everyone is of the 'RAH RAH NEW SONIC GAME IN 2D FTW' opinion. So the designers go and read that and figure, hell yeah we're doing a great job, let's keep doing this.
Now, all that having been said, I'm still excited for Sonic's return to 2d. Even if it's not exactly like the Genesis games, I think it'll still be a million times better than the recent "Sonic" games they've been producing... Like that crap for the Wii... seriously wtf was that.
Sega fans in general : we want classic Sonic without long legs.
Sega fans on Sega forum : SHADOW IS MAH BISHI!!! http://www.sega-16.com/forum/images/icons/heart.gif
Well good points. But back then their ads for the Sonic games were freakin' awesome on TV and in mags. We probably all remember how intense and trippy they were.
Sure if the internet was around back then, Sega would have been advertising with it. But back in the olden days, Sega never talked about cupcakes... Sega never told me "You're not dreaming!" and "Let the celebrations begin!" Sega seems to have become so flamboyant...!:daze:
You probably weren't around during the Sega CD / 32X / Saturn days... Their commercials and ads were HORRIBLE.
EDIT 1 example out of many: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...highlight=sega
Mildly disappointed its only in digital download form, but I'm still pretty excited regardless.
I don't know, but the first 5 seconds showing the first level reminds me more of Sonic 2 rehashed Emerald Hill Zone than a new take of the first "green" zones of Sonic games. Maybe something like a massive Japanese oriental garden or something...:|
Ohwell, still looks great! Day one purchase for sho! :D
Yeah the advertising has lost it's edge. It used to be that SEGA was the cool company and Sonic was the cool character. He's not so cool hanging around with characters like Big the Cat, or Cream, or any of those other retarded animal friends they came up.
Although this is one of the reasons why I'm looking forward to Sonic 4, no stupid friends.
Yeah, I hear that. I'm holding out hope that after they release all the episodes as downloads they will make disk versions available. Like Wipeout HD. I think there would be enough of a demand for it that they could do it. I mean it is SEGA, if there's one thing they love to do is release the same games in every format imaginable.Quote:

So they have a faster running animation but they haven't shown it yet. The specific mention of Sonic CD makes me wonder if the standing super Peel-out will make a return.Quote:

lol
I guess I was mainly thinking of the advertising for the earlier Sonic games, especially Sonic 1 and 2, which I think was mostly awesome.
You're right that Sega has put out some horrible ads though. I remember the Saturn commercials being so awful, iirc someone kept yelling at me about football video games LOL!!! (Actually maybe those were DC ads.)
Yeah I hope so! It's a great move. The only games I've played w/ the peel-out are Sonic CD, Sonic Megamix, and the Game Gear's Sonic Chaos!
Well said... It does seem that way. Is Sega just holding out on the content of the game, or is the content just nonexistent so far! lol
I dissagree, I was too young to really remember any pre 1993 Sega adds, and do remember some late Genesis advertizements (not for CD, don't remember 32x either, but I do remember one for 3D Blast, and especially that Chrismass S&K commerical, that one was pretty good). Some of the Saturn adds were OK, the problem was they just weren't aimed properly for a broad audience. (theatre of the eye was a bit too cerebral for instance) Nothing like the JP saturn adds though, those were damn awesome.
I liked the US Dreamcast adds.
I hope so, This would be a smart move if they dont even understand the correct way to make him run! I wish they would just get it right allready.Quote:

They need to make Sonic look less like he was made from the sega saturn intro :D
Love the info about fixing his run anyways
Has Sega even made any attempts to tweak the classic formula? Most of the 3D games barely even acknowledge the classic formula to begin with.
I agree with you though, Sega should be doing everything possible to avoid turning off the sort of people they're trying to reach (as in, the sort of people who haven't so much as thought about Sonic in years). But on the other hand, they have to think about Sonic's future here. They don't want it to look like the only way Sonic can be good is by retracing the steps already taken by the original games. I think the reason they're including a few aspects of modern Sonic is so that it'll seem more like they're bridging the gap between then and now.
I just hope to God that voice acting isn't included in that.
I'm still really excited about the new "secret" platform they'll be revealing. I know some have said it's the iPhone, but even Sega's Sonic 4 site hasn't revealed it yet (it remains with a question mark, three actually "???")
[edit] On the other hand, rumors continue strong on the iPhone.

I don't even mind it. But I can't help but keep my fingers crossed for Sonic 4 Ep1 to be just the tip of the iceberg... (I mean, like, where is this "leaked" image Sonic Stadium found ?) ;)
