Is that the same one as the Game Gear battery pack?
Does the Nomad use 6 AA batteries? You can almost definitely make your own with a 6-cell holder, even make it rechargeable at radio shack (speaking of top dollar).
I just acquired a needs-rebuild GG battery pack, the kind that screw down to the back of the GG, would that work?
The screw down one for the Game Gear doesn't mate to the back of the Nomad. The Nomad battery pack clips onto the back and there were 2 versions, one that held 6 AA batteries and one that was rechargeable. The rechargeable ones are almost guaranteed not to work, but can be rebuilt with new cells. I would advise you find the one that holds AA's and get NiMH rechargables, but I've had trouble finding one.
I have one of the Game Gear battery packs that clip onto your belt and plugs into the Nomad/Game Gear AC adaptor port and it gives me over 4 hours of playtime. They seem to be a lot less likely to be dead.
It's messed up too.
I wish you could just buy things, and have them work.
The universal AC car adapter doesn't work well with the Nomad either, you need to buy the recharge pack to get it to work with the car adapter properly.
But after a while, that won't work either. : (
i have 2 rechargables and 3 aa holder ones i bought one of the rechargeables new at walmart for half price back in i think 1997 but that was still $27.50 and it still works good today i might have the only one
the second one i got from funcoland for like$5 and its cells were so fuzzy with white crystals and i replaced the cells and it still has trouble charging it never does the auto switch off after charging like my factory origional so i have to run a timer while charging it and even with todays 2000mah nihm cells as opposed to teh origional 1600 mah i can only squeeze 2.5 hours of play out of it
funny cause if i put high capacity aa's in the 6 cell batt pack i can get 3 hours
i like how the rechargable pack hangs on better than the 6 cell it has these little spring loaded pins that lock it to the connectors as well as the plastic locking nub ive had the 6 aa pack come apart while playing the back cover just spontainiosly pops off
sorry i cant give your buddy one of mine its every man fo hisself out dere
If you're into making your own battery packs, get an 18volt drill battery and rip the cells from it. Figure out a holder. Tape, plexiglass, wood, whatever, those cells absolutely rock.
Would I be abled to buy one of those rebuilt rechargeable battery packs.
If you meant "Where" would you be able to get one, check Harbor Freight, I got mine on sale for $4 there, or any hardware store. Lowe's, Sears, any place that sells power tools.
One note, these cells are good for almost anything that has a rechargeable battery in it, BUT it will not replace lithium ion cells. They will be either NiCd or NiMH, but very nice high capacity ones.
No I meant can I buy one off you?
OH!! Let me get another one and I will pass on the savings. I'll pick it up tomorrow, let you know more then.
Hi, sorry for my tardiness on this thread, I unually only hang out (well, lurk mostly :)) at the Tech Aid forum.
xXxTWO FACExXx, I rebuild Nomad rechargeable batteries. If you've got a dead one I can refurb it or else I have a few dead ones around here, I can fix one up for you if you want to buy one.
I use the same type cells as the original, but 1800 mAh instead of the original 1600 mAh. Four-hour play on a full charge.
Looks like you're going in another direction, so this is just another option if that doesn't fly.

I would just pick up a dead one and replace the cells... I get even 9 hours out of my 12000mAh pack :3 (I do have backlight mod aswell)
If you're only getting 2½ hours from a full charge on 2000 mAh cells, there's something wrong. I rebuild Nomad PowerBack rechargeable batteries with 1800 mAh cells and consistently get four hours on a full charge. With 2000 mAh cells you should be getting close to 4½ hours per charge on the Nomad.
nathanallan, what is the mAh rating on those drill pack cells? I'd bet they're bigger than the Nomad PowerBack's cells so you're probably getting days per charge on those things!:cool:
If you're using the PowerBack's charging circuit to charge them and your cells are over 1800 mAh, make sure to charge them for longer than the PowerBack's charge timing. The timer in that thing is just that - a timer - so it doesn't know that you're trying to charge monster cells :wtf:.

No chance to pick up those drill batteries yet, but the cheapies have 1200mah cells in them, if I was to spend more on better ones then they would probably be upwards of 2500-2800mah cells in them. They last a lot longer in an actual drill because there are 10-12 of them making up the pack.
It's been hectic as hell at work, lots of customers and lots of business and I have to stay there to take care of them all. Also, the cells aren't the same size physically, I think they're called N or something, they're not for general consumer use. Great little things, I rebuilt a pack for an Epson computer (really old machine) once, and I bet they STILL have a charge after two years in the closet!
I'll really try to get across town tomorrow, see what's there. Also, I'll check Lowe's, see what's on special. I want days worth of charge!!
The best off-the-shelf batteries I have used are the 2500mah nimh Energizers. I have had the same 4 in my camera and Compaq C140 for over two years now, they keep recharging and giving great results. But they're expensive, about $1.50 each and they're in packs of four.
So I guess I'm going to get 6 rechargeable 3000 mAh AA's off of eBay.
Hope that powers up my Nomad for a while.
Unfortunately I'll probably have to wait until I get paid twice (biweekly too) since I have so many other priorities : (
Hopefully someone else in the market for Nomad chargeables will test them out.
