I've only been into Genesis/Megadrive for about 4 years. In it's '89-96 heyday, I had no interest in the console at all except briefly for the 32x add-on. How many years have you all been playing and collecting Genesis/megadrive games?

I started back up in 2007. I have about somewhere from 50 to 60 games in my collection.
Got my Megadrive around late 1991 i think, bought some games, sold some games,
then i quit around.. 1996 and hopped on the PSX/N64 bandwagon.
got back in to it around late 1999 when i discovered online auctions and after missing the good times i had with it.
been actively collecting ever since.
currently got around 235 Megadrive/Genesis games.
I got mine back in 93' at a warehouse where they were $50. Not sure the legality of that place, but it was a good deal. I had around 30 games to start off with and now after years I have almost 200.
My initial Mega Drive was probably obtained between 1993-1994 (Going by the box, it has a 32x advert on there).
That kinda places be between the ages of 1 and 2... so you could say I've been into the Mega Drive my whole life (If not the Master System).
Lame biog-ramble follows. For short answer skip to the end.
I started "collecting" when the MD was current - first got a brand new Megadrive/MegaCD in 1992. They came with Sonic 2, the Mega CD pack-in games, and a bunch of others (competition prize). I very much enjoyed the games (except Cobra Command), especially Sonic & Streets of Rage, and thereafter saved money / begged (taking special advantage of Christmas & birthdays) to get more of them. They were always cheaper than most SNES games (my first console), more often found in BOGOF offers, and therefore the best way to experience that whole "YAY I GOT A NEW TOY" sensation. Not sure how many games I had back then - maybe 30-something by the end of the 90s? Still have most of them. If I was in the same county as them I could tell you. Anyway, the bulk of my games collection was always MD stuff.
A few years later ('98ish?) I got an N64 - MD collecting and gaming took a backseat as I devoted my gaming time to the new console (and also rediscovering the SNES games which I enjoyed - and still do - Mario Kart / World, SFII, Pop 'n' Twinbee, etc). Towards the end of leaving school / starting college I didn't really play games at all for a few years. (Folly!)
Around 2003, too much free time (thanks to the period of nothingness between college & uni) coincided with the discovery of "retro" games on the high street (namely Gamestation - who last year became retro-binning scum, but that's a different story). I marvelled at their cheapness, bought a few games, set up the old consoles, and remembered how fun they were to play, especially with other people.
The year after (i think - the greater number of my "uni" memories are filed under "mental sleep-deprived coffee fueled haze with too many books, too many people, and argh" - thus it can be tricky to place them), I was pointed in the direction of e(vil)Bay. More purchasing of cheap retro-goodness ensued, along with the discovery that collectors would often pay decent money for "rare" games. All of this led to the purchase of a large lot of Megadrive games - around 200 for less than £1 each (which, unless they were all sports games, probably wouldn't happen now!) My plan was to have a play of them, keep the games I liked, and resell the others - all of which would eventually equal free games!
However, this plan had a fatal flaw - me. I liked most of the games I played, and they looked so pretty that I ended up keeping over 2 thirds of them. Now, in my defense, it was a very good set of games. Furthermore, it did all take place in a haze of madness (interlaced with the obligatory long periods of boredom and general regression encouraged by the university environment) so things like "reason" and "logic" had taken a holiday. If I told you that between 2004 and 2009 I took it upon myself to amass nearly 1000 Sega games (700-odd MD) you'd probably tell me that reason and logic must've died on the journey back - and you might be right, but you say some very harsh things, sir.
**Short answer: 1992-98, then 2003-present day. Now I have lots. I like Megadrive games.**
Exactly 2 years now, in September.
Started my game collection from scratch, after dusting my beloved Japanese MD I got from my dad in 1991 - from the innards of an old and roach-ridden wardrobe!
First game I bought: Darius II :)
Second game I boght: Heavy Nova :) :)
I think I got mine in 93 and I had it for like 2 years or so then it got messed up and would'nt work. I them obtained another one from somebody back in 96 or 97 IDK. These were both Model 2 versions. I really got off into it when I first got a job back in 97. I started playing RPG's I also remember when me and my brother walked miles to try and find X-Men 2: Clone Wars and I found it at a Blockbuster and they gave me Christmas NiGHTS for free.
From 1992 to 1995, then I picked it back up again in 2000.
I played a handful of games on my cousin's Genesis and started emulating it back when emulation basically started in about 97/98. I started collecting all retro games in about 2007 in response to the ripoff the Wii VC turned out to be. It began with obtaining a model 2 Genesis after getting a 32X for free from a spare parts cabinet at a computer repair store (they also handled retro games). Since then, I bought about 150 games across Genesis, Sega CD, and 32X. I had always had every intention of retro collecting, but it took the combination of realizing there was nothing interesting in the current gen (Wii is the #1 dust collector of all systems I own), realizing how cheap games were on Amazon and eBay and at that computer store I mentioned above, and finally realizing you could clean them with rubbing alcohol both in terms of functionality and to restore them to like-new condition. I've been at a standstill lately as I have almost everything I want, I have complete ROM sets for every system, and I need to save money for law school in case I don't have time to work and/or I can't find a job for a while with flexible enough hours.
I have to say, it's kind of odd you didn't get into the Genesis until the 32X, most people bitch endlessly about it, I personally think it's great and always have.
Been at it for a year now. I started re-collecting MD stuff in September 2008, starting out with a good-looking second hand Mega Drive II, along with Sonic 1 and Another World. Within the last year, my collection has grown to 24 CIB carts (26 unique games) and 1 loose cart. Despite my best efforts to keep the total number of games under 21, the 27th game is currently underway and will get posted in the Haul thread when I get it.
Oh yeah, I got my first MD pretty late in the game, in 1995. I gave it away to a cousin a year later (stupid stupid stupid), after I bought my PlayStation. In that year, I managed to collect only four games (two of which sucked ass), while everything else was rented, so the loss wasn't that great.
I have been buying Genny games since 1990. I don't think I really started to collect any games though until 2000 and even then really only the last 4 years or so have I been hitting thrift stores almost every other day to maintain my habit.
I started this year. Iron Lizard, I hit up thrift stores too. But sometimes it's a hit and miss. I once got a close to mint copy of an SMS version of Super Monaco GP for like 50c AUD.
Yeah thrift stores are always hit and miss. Its why I go so often.
I've been a video game collector since I bought my first gaming system in 1994 (a Model 2 Genesis w/ Sonic 2). I lost almost all interest in video gaming around the spring of 2002 (mainly because of school becoming my first priority), then found my "way" again on april of this year. That's when I became a hardcore gaming collector (namely for the Sega Genesis). The funny thing is, it all happened because I opened a "treasure box" inside my closet. I was on an ebay selling-spree and I had run out of items to sell; my games were next to go. I've been glad ever since that I decided not to post them up for auction. :o
Then I found sega-16...
...and then Youtube...
...and then eBay, again...
...and then garage sales and thrift stores. :D
I've been on and off with all my video game collecting. For the genesis I first start getting into collecting for it around 1999-2000 took a break until now and recently picked up a few more carts for it ironically right in time for the Retrogen's release.
I have Mega Drive since early 1992 and in is live time (until 1997) I have 30 games.
in December 2000 I start collecting and now I have around 650/700 different games.
Only thing I collect these days are dead presidents.
Still have a cache of SEGA paraphernalia in situ and some unmolested games that have never been deflowered... But I've never "collected" sealed anything.
Don't know if I'll begin again but you guys are tickling my why the f*@k not gland.
While I started really getting into gaming in 1997 with the purchase of a Nintendo 64, it wasn't until 2006 that I got into the Sega MegaDrive when I got a batch of broken consoles comprised of 2 Super NESes, 4 NESes and 3 Genesis Model 1s, of which I still have one of those restored in perfect working order(had a SEVERELY corroded cartridge slot and damaged controller port). Since that day, I've been searching everywhere for Genesis/MegaDrive hardware(all I need is a working Genesis 3 and a Nomad) as well as Genesis/MegaDrive cartridges, of which I'm still missing:
-After Burner II
-Thunder Force III
-Contra Hard Corps(Japanese and American versions)
-MegaMan The Wily Wars
-G-LOC Air Battle
But my area is now FLOODED with the usual Sports bullshit that plagues the Genesis and Super NES, and it really PISSES ME OFF! I HATE SPORTS GAMES(well, except for Brett Hull Hockey '95(Super NES version - I think the Genesis one pales in comparison) and NHL '96)! This is what makes me want to buy/build a Flash ROM programmer because not only are those Sports shits widely available, but they're about 3 to 5 bucks a pop. Plus, I've got some Flash ROM chips just waiting to be put into a Genesis cartridge.
I really just started about 4 months ago. It feels like a much longer time. I would have a lot more Genesis stuff if I wasn't being "sidetracked" by Atari, Dreamcast, PS3, and the arcade machine in my basement. My measly collection of 21 Genesis games and 2 Sega CD games is now being blocked by my extra Darth Vader Atari 2600 to make room for my wood-grained Atari 2600. I haven't really been into my Genesis lately because of Fallout 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and I don't think I'll get back into it because now I'm extremely busy. I haven't found any Genesis games that have really caught my attention (except the copy of Snatcher the local game store has. Too bad I already spent my video game fund on MvC2 and Atari games.)
So, I guess I've been collecting 1/3 of one year. Beat that!;)
I've been collecting Genesis Games for 2 years now. at first I just wanted the Sonic, Phantasy Star, and Toejam & Earl games, but I found other games at the Flea Markets & Pawn shops that looked good and ended up buying those too such as Bonanza Bros, Shining in The Darkness, Comix Zone, and Earthworm Jim, sometime later I Googled Genesis and SEGA-16 was the 1st page to pop up and there were a lot more Genesis games I wanted some of which I eventually got others I'm still working on getting, as of now I have 110 Genesis Games and 5 SEGA CD games, though I haven't had the SEGA CD nearly as long about 6 months now and theres not too many SEGA CD games I want.
translation: he is saving his money as of late, but still has a fair amount of Sega products as well as some sealed games, though he does not necessarily seek out sealed games. He also expresses interest in continuing his collection due to the interest expressed by members of this forum. This has been 17daysolderthannes with your guide to facts :)
I started collecting about 2 months ago, I've owned a Genesis System for years, probably around 1992 or 93, I had quite a few games back then but got rid of all except about 12 of the games I liked at the time. Since my resurgence in Genesis has came around I have probably 50-60 plus games now in the 2 month span, mostly local game shops and a little ebay. I have about 10 or so games to finish my collection now of wants.
I also started my SNES resurgence in the last 2 months and went from 0 systems and 0 games to like 20+ games and 2 systems and like 6 controllers (one a brand new original SNES pad that was sealed! not those knock off pads)
Most of my games are loose in good to acceptable looking range but all play like mint since I've professionally cleaned them!
I now do have Extra copies of Gunstar Heroes and Rocket Knight Adventures to get rid of, lol!
Umm since spring 2009 after being on this site a couple months and then picking up a Model 1 Genesis+ M1 CD off shopgoodwill. (whihc would have been a good deal had shipping not doubled the price from the ~$30 I won it for, and had they not done a crappy shipping job... one of the ribbons in the sega cd had come loose among other things, and both smelled of smoke, better than having bugs in it though)
Well, at least it turned out to be a pre-TMSS model 1, 2 original 3-buttons along with the ac adaptors (one of which had the tip broken from being plugged in while shipping), but no AV cable and only Lethal Enforcers CD (which was a bonus).
Now I've added Sonic 1, 2, Virtua Racing, Ecco The Dolphin, Columns, 688 Attack Sub, Silpheed, BattleCorps, and Stellar Fire. Plus Virtua Racing Delux and Kolibri I recently found at Play & Trade for $.99 each, (no 32x as of yet, but my uncle had a loose one he got with a SMS II, and I'll get both if/when he finds it)
I'd started out with the original Genesis somewhere around 1990, when I'd bought my friend's HDG Genesis he'd bought near launch. I later sold it in 1995, along with my Sega CD and all the games to buy and rent import games for my newly aquired Saturn.
I'm not quite sure when I'd decided to buy another Genesis, but I believe it was somewhere around 97, when I'd snapped back to my senses and started buying Genesis games, while they were still around. It was probably whenever the Nomad was selling for $99.
Luckily, I was able to find complete copies of Herzog Zwei, Shining in the Darkness and my beloved Phantasy Star II (game guide included).
I probably have around 65 complete titles and another 10 or so bare cartridges laying around. You can dig through this list to see what exactly I own for the Genesis and my other systems.
Like most people here I had an MD way back when, circa 1990, and then I was lucky enough to get a Mega CD for Christmas in 1992. Collected games till 1996, at which point I flogged the MD/MCD and around 60 games to Cash Converters for £90 and bought two (!) Playstation games with the money.
I've regretted it ever since so about a year or so ago I bought a Multimega, filed down the cart slot, switch modded it and have been playing it ever since. My collection is around 10 games but, with stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho and Bare Knuckle 2, my collection is more about quality than quantity. I also have around 20 of the very best MCD/SCD games as I'm probably more of a MCD fanboy than MD.
I suppose it's been since about 2001, I'd been picking up odd Mega Drive games for years but they were pretty rare until around about the PS2s release, then suddenly car boots were flooded with old systems and games. I ended up going regularly and picked up many old systems (Atari 2600, NES, MS, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast etc.) and games, eventually I ended up with about 15 Mega Drive systems at one point as I used to pick up systems with 10+ games for less than £5.
Since we moved house 2 years ago I found I didn't have the room to keep it anymore and I realised that I didn't like or play half the stuff I bought, so I sold about 80% of my collection. I just kept mint condition boxed versions of my used systems and the best games. Since then I've just been picking up the real gems, everything I'd always wanted to play but never found. I'm trying to just keep a small but very high quality collection mostly focused on the Mega Drive, Dreamcast and PS2.
I've still got one small collection of games that are never played though, my Japanese Mega Drive games, which I buy them purely for the wonderful artwork on the box (eg. Alisia Dragoon, Crying).
Actually a friend of mine traded me a Genesis for a pair of Ice Skates circa 1994-95ish and I played it for a while then just wanted a SNES so I got rid of it for that. In 1998 or so I started collecting hardcore and picked up all kinds of consoles and the Genesis was one of them. I've been collecting ever since and have roughly 400 games for the Genesis and its two add-ons. I would have plenty more but I have an almost 3,000 game collection for over 50 consoles so money gets pretty evenly spread out. Since I started writing and posting for Sega-16 about a year ago, I've come to love the Genesis all the more.
Since 91. Saw Sonic on display at a Software Etc. on the Genesis and I was hooked from that point on.
I don't know, Happy Console Gamer seems to have a lot of stuff, it does seem concentrated around specific systems though.Quote:

Also if you think I have a lot of games then just go check out some of the game rooms on Digital Press, they put me to shame!
And I thought I was hardcore with my 'to buy' list of some 130+ genesis/megadrive games. Your collection leaves my little collecting aspirations in the dust. :o
Some posters on this thread have mentioned quality vs. quantity. I have some 60 genesis/megadrive games and all of them range from good to awesome. There isn't one I don't play now and again.
Azure Phoenix, you NEED to play Alisia Dragoon. The game is awesome. You're majorly cheating yourself if you don't. :!:
I've never been a collector as far as my MegaDrive is concerned, I only own games that I like and I have them all complete and in good condition.
I tend to use emulation as a 'try before I buy' tool, so I never drop money on anything totally crap.
I'm a Genesis newbie, so I have just 4 games: Ranger X, Sonic 3, and the two Vectormans. I found out that a local Play N Trade carries Genny and SNES games, so I'm pretty excited. Do any of you guys have the Genesis 6-Pak? It looks pretty cool, but I'm not sure if I should get it instead of the original games. Are there any problems with it, other than the edited bosses in RoS?
My best friends big brother had a massive library of Master System and Megadrive games back in the early 90's, and I was envy as hell. My parents was a pair of old hippies who believed that video games was bad for kids, and that a console could not even be considered as a toy for me... at least they gave me a lot of LEGO Technics.
At some point in the mid 90's I finally had the cash to buy a Megadrive myself, so I bought one with a handful of games from another friend of mine. I played Streets of Rage 3 till my fingers bled.
I entered my early teens shortly after and as a result my IQ dropped rapidly. I sold the Megadrive again for $200 (the same, I had paid for it), inspite of my father telling me to just put it in a box and save it for a rainy day. Why didn't I listen!!!
Fast forward to 2004. My father suddenly dies from a stroke, and I prop out of my engineering studies. After that I spend a lot of time just amelessly surfing the internet and by coincidence I find a local online auction with a cheap Megadrive. I start collecting as a sort of personal therapy, and now 5 years later my life is back on track and I own about 250 Megadrive games :)
