New region bypass Game Genie codes

In case anyone missed it, forum member Tony H found new region bypass Game Genie codes for a couple Japanese exclusive Mega Drive games. Here's the quote:

Melf, it may be worthwhile to update your Importing Made Easy feature with this info. Surely someone with a US machine is dying for some 16-bit robotic cat / manga sumo wrestling / Santa Claus action!

I made a code for Sailor Moon just now that works in an emulator with the TMSS BIOS enabled, could you check it on your system for me?

Hey guys, been going to this site for awhile and I love it. First time posting and I was wondering if anyone knows the game genie code to to play Dragon Ball Z: Bu Yu Retsuden? Can't seem to find it. Thanks.

That one should play without modification, at least it does for me. I just use a Game Genie as a pass-through and it works. Are you talking about the French version? That might be displayed in a 50 Hz refresh rate which I'm fairly sure you can't toggle with a Game Genie code (for some games at least). Same for Shane Warne Cricket, I'm afraid.

Oh, and re: Dragon Ball Z: Bu Yu Retsuden. My Japanese copy plays fine with Game Genie as a passthrough. No codes needed.

Mugenmidget, I'm not trying to step on any toes here, but I thought I'd show you a few pointers on how to shorten your regional bypass codes from several codes down to just one or two codes.

I'll use Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon as an example...

You used 3 codes, but it can be done in just one code. There are several different ways to bypass the regional check with just one code, but this one is probably the best:

Game Genie code = AJWA-AA7L / Hex code = 0024AA:6002

Here is the assembly trace log of the game starting correctly (passing the regional check)...

Your 3 codes NOP'd $28D2, $28D4, AND $28D6, which works fine, but if you look at the assembly above, you can see that it starts at $24AA and jumps to $28D2, does it's check, then RTS's (returns) to $24AE and continues on. The code I made just branches (jumps) right from $24AA to $24AE and therefore completely skips all the regional check in the middle of the assembly trace.

Here are some other ways to make a regional lockout bypass with just one code...

$28DC:6004, or $28DC:4E75, or $28D2:600E.

The last one there ($28D2:600E) uses the same ROM address as one of your codes, but instead of NOP'ing it (4E71) and NOP'ing the next 2 addresses, I just branched it to the RTS.

Hope that helps.

Although I haven't checked, I'm pretty sure the other regional bypass GG codes you posted can be done with fewer codes.

Regional Lockout Bypass Codes

Version 0.4 Oct 03, 2009

If you have a game/cartridge from a different region and you get a
screen that says something like: "DEVELOPED FOR USE ONLY WITH ....",
or some other screen that won't let you play the game because it's
from the wrong region, then the Game Genie codes below should solve
your problem.

Note that if there is a master code for the game, you will probably
need to use it. The master code bypasses the checksum routine.

"Semi" Universal Regional Lockout Bypass Codes...

If you have a game cartridge from a different region and it won't play
on your console, the codes below MIGHT allow you to bypass the regional
lockout. The codes below will *NOT* work in many cases.

All these codes do is change the country ID letter in the Genesis ROM
header, but not all games use that letter to determine the region.

EAAT-BL1T
"USA" (U). This code will make some non USA cartridges work on a USA
Genesis console.

EAAT-AL1T
"Europe" (E). This code will make some non European cartridges work on
a European Mega Drive console.

EAAT-AY1T
"Japan" (J). This code will make some non Japanese cartridges work on
a Japanese Mega Drive console. Note that on some games, this code will
only work on Japan "NTSC" systems, and not Japan/Hong Kong "PAL" systems.

I was a HUGE Road Rash fan. Most of the track modifying codes I made by just entering random codes. That was long before there were any emulators or debuggers. Some of the track modding codes were glitchy, but some of them were pretty fun. All of the newer Road Rash 2 codes I made using a debugger/emulator, so they will work without any glitches.

Question re: Xenon 2 for Megadrive. As it's locked in at a 50 hz signal, will it play on a US machine if the EU region code is bypassed?

I own both games and I've just tried them on real hardware. Here's my results:

Story of Thor - A Successor of The Light (E)...

Bypasses region lockout, but music is sluggish and the screen keeps rolling over and over.

Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron (E)

The same thing: bypasses lockout, but slow music+ rolling screen.

Nah, I have a modded PAL console with a 50/60hz switch, basically I usually boot games up in PAL50 wait until after the region check and switch to 60hz afterwards, unfortunately Streets of Rage 2, Ecco: Tides of Time and Sonic 3 all change their game speed depending on the results of the boot up (at the same time as the region check) so if I do this with them when I change to 60hz it screws everything up.

Using your codes I can start my console up on 60hz, the region check doesn't happen and the game boots in 60hz naturally.

You're probably right, Story of Thor and Toejam & Earl may not have any NTSC/60hz programming. Bummer. You do have one alternative... Buy a 50hz TV and a 50hz generator. :-)

Jackal, thanks for the info. Based on what you two reported, I don't think this problem can be solved with Game Genie codes.

I am curious to see the difference in programming between a 50hz only game and a 60hz only game.

I don't really understand how it works tbh, do they put the game on the cartridge in two forms? or one small section of code to change the way the main program runs?

If a lot of extra double up code has to be used then maybe size constraints forced them to release two separate specific cartridge versions in this case. :confused:

Nah, playing them on 50hz is easy for me as my tv displays both 50hz and 60hz and the switch solves everything else.

The problem is the fact that 50hz still displays the picture squashed (all be it less in these games cases than usual) and even more importantly Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis plays like crap on PAL as its slow and unresponsive. My best bet will just be to re-buy imports of them I guess.

I've only done one game for right now. If it works on your system (without a shrunken screen, rolling screen, slow music etc) then I'll do the other codes.

The reason you were getting an orange screen with the "universal" bypass code, is because using the code caused the checksum check to fail. The "universal" bypass code does actually work on this game, but you also need to use a master code to get around the checksum problem. I also made a "regular" regional bypass code for the game, so if you could test them both, that would be great.

Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition (E)

EAAT-BL1T
Universal regional bypass code. (Must also use master code.)

J4ST-AA80
Lets you play the (E) cartridge on a 60hz US Genesis console. (Must also use master code.)

BLAT-AA3R
Master code (must use this code, together with one of the codes above).

So you'll need to use 2 codes (the master, and one of the others). Let me know if both of the bypass codes work (either one of them should work).

Both codes seem to work fine thanks! the game usualy plays the music too fast on 60hz but now its fine.

There is some hum coming from the right speaker but thats probably my TV or the Game Genie doing that I'd imagine.

Just finished the codes for the other game. As before, the "Semi" universal code works on this game, but I also made a regular type regional bypass code. Test both codes and let me know the results (I'm adding all the info everyone gives me to my file, and it'll be in the next version/update).

This game also needs a master code.

Super Street Fighter II (E)

Xenon 2 plays fine on US hardware with the code! Well, it never played "fine" to begin with, but that's another matter. It completes my Mega Drive & Master System shooter collection, and for that, I'm thankful! Appreciate your efforts, mugenmidget and Tony H!

Tony H, is there any possibilty you could please do a Game Genie code to bypass the region lockout on Soliel (the UK version of Crusader of Centy)?

No problem, I just need to know a couple things...

Which cartridge do you have: E, F, G, or S ? (I think that's European, French, German, and Spanish).

Also, are you playing on a US Genesis console?

Yeah thanks they worked, that game has a lot of buzz coming off the right speaker too, must be a Capcom Cartridge thing or something I guess.

Pressing my luck here...

If one had the appropriate region bypass Game Genie code(s), would roms of unlicensed games play on a flash cart? Specifically, I'd like to play Super Bubble Bobble MD, Smart Mouse, and Top Shooter on actual US Genesis hardware. Perhaps I haven't dug around enough, but every version of those roms fails when tested on hardware (Bubble Bobble freezes at title screen; Smart Mouse fades to black 10 seconds in; Top Shooter merely displays attract mode).

As discussed elsewhere, unlicensed games apparently have unique means of preventing pirates further pirate pirated games. Say that fast 5 times! As I understand it, there's often dumps of the original rom (with copy protection) AND dumps with the protection hacked out. Game Genie / PAR codes make Bubble Bobble and Smart Mouse playable on Fusion (I don't have codes to test Top Shooter). Would a Game Genie bypass code do the trick on actual hardware?
