I played it on the Sega Channel and today i wanted to download the rom, but its nowhere to be found. Then i notice that there is only an SNES version of it out.
Was it a Sega Channel exclusive?

No idea, but I remember this being previewed back in the day. I would have thought that outside the US it would have had a release, but I don't seem to remember it.
I don't believe it was ever released in cart form.
Have no fear though, drx has the genesis beta cart and will hopefully be dumping it soon. :D
So NO ONE was able to capture these games back in the day? I mean, people were able to copy DC games when the DC was still current, why couldn't anyone hack the Sega Channel and dump the ROMs to their computer? Ugh, it makes me so mad, some of the best games were Sega Channel exclusives. On paper it seems easy too: the games are obviously streamed into the RAM of the Sega Channel adapter...why not just redirect that stream to a computer and viola!
It pisses me off too and in the long run makes rom collecting a nightmare.
Because no one dumped sega channel or anything on it we don't have:
US Mega Man
Garfield the lost levels
US Addams family values
A crap load of ocean games
US golden axe 3 *Sega still has it though, bastards*
Numerous "Test Drives"
Those cool advertisement screens
All that fricken sweet music
and finally.......
The bulky Sega channel adapter so somebody could dissect it and maybe use it for something!!!!!!
It does sound so simple but I guess everybody thought Sega channel was the new coke and it would be around forever.
Is the version of Golden Axe III on the SEGA Genesis Collection and Virtual Console just the Japanese one or is it something different? As far as I can see the (J) version is 100% in English already so I'm wondering if there are known differences between the SEGA Channel version and what was released in Japan.
Should be the same since the game is totally in English.
Ah, thanks, I was comparing videos and just came back to edit that into my post. :)
I guess my next question would be is there actually anything cited as different between the SEGA Channel version and the Japanese release? Not saying there wouldn't be anything changed but it seems like if we already have a full English version of the game then it's less of a travesty compared to things like Lost Levels.
What I really don't understand is why we haven't seen any former Sega Channel releases on the Wii VC. Of all of the shit I would never buy on the VC, some Sega Channel exclusives would actually be worth it for once. Then, a hacker could properly dump them from there and we would finally have the ROMs we all know and love from the versions in other regions.
I didn't even know that The Flintstones Movie game actually received a Sega Channel release. I thought it was a totally unreleased game for the Mega Drive/Genesis. Europe never got it in any shape or form at least.
No wonder why the prototype is in fully completed form then, if it was a released game after all, although there's still all those other Ocean prototype games which are completed but absent of physical copies: Jelly Boy, Waterworld, Mr. Nutz 2, Putty Squad and Lobo.
What other Ocean games? Maybe any of the aforementioned like Mr. Nutz 2 and Putty Squad?
yea, thats what I meant. There is just too many games on sega channel that just went up in smoke.
I just wish that before I die I could see the games that were most elusive to the rest of the world.
I wouldn't doubt it, there is no list stated what appeared on sega channel and what didn't, the only way we would "know" is a claim by another forum member and even then, that would be disputable.
Besides, sega had a "TEST DRIVE" channel in which you could play betas for a certain amount of time. Certainly not a far fetched statement. ;)
What happened to that game? Drx has the beta Rom and wanted to release it in 2010 if there would be people who are willing to donate a certain amount.
Same goes with Putty Squad.
I once asked him how much was already donated and he told me it was nothing.
Here is the link: http://forums.hidden-palace.org/viewtopic.php?p=8748 (Scroll down a bit).
When I asked him again last here he didn't answer me at all.
So what happended to these games? Aren't there any people interested but me? Or are there any reasons to not release the roms?
He might not wanted it get dumped... It kills the value of the game
Same thing as with the NES prototype of Sim City I guess.
There's only like one copy found and they don't want to dump it to keep the value.
Sadly their greed might cause the content to be lost forever in the long run :(
It's nice of DRX to at least offer to dump them for some donations :)
As for Sim City NES I don't have much hope for a dump.
I wanted to donate but he doesn't answer me anymore so I ask myself if something happend so that he refuses to dump it. Furthermore I am asking myself why there was no single person who wanted to donate and wanted these both games being released. I cannot imagine that there is really NOBODY who cares about these games. With Lobo it worked quite well so why not with Putty Squad and the Flintstones Game???
I had the cover disc demo of Putty Squad for the Amiga when I was younger, kept waiting for the release that eventually never came, hmph.
Time to fire up a SNES emulator, didn't even know this game got released at all.
If you want to talk to drx, best hang around the IRC channel #protos on the drx.pl server. I never see him post on his site anymore. He mostly vanished after the whole megaupload takedown, fearing that sites like his would become targets next. That's also why all the download links are gone.
Considering the prices he wanted, it's not that hard to believe nobody was interested in donating for these games. I could care less for a Flintstones game since there's not one that's really any good, and a Beethoven game which of course those have never been good. They're both movie licenses too, so that says a lot. Putty Squad I must have missed, but it was on SNES, so yet another port. None are terribly interesting compared to other lost titles.
Of course, I'm all for preservation, just personally don't care for those games myself and would rather save my money for something else. As for stuff like Sim City, well, if I had it I'd make a dump for myself but I'd probably be in the same boat as the current owner. You aren't going to find many people that will willingly give away something that could sell for thousands away for free like that, completely devaluing it. As much as it sucks, even if you buy something like without the intention if making it an investment, the price you spent usually makes it one. Only a fool(or a very generous fool with no money problems) would completely devalue something so rare just to please a bunch of strangers. If anyone is truly serious about getting something like that they can do what the current owner likely did and shell out the huge cash. It's not greed, it's just not being a pushover.
Speaking of drx, I found a forum post yesterday that went into detail about the Toejam & Earl 2 prototype,
for those who don't remember, a while ago drx had a TJE2 proto that was apparently very different from the released version and might be the long lost "original TJE2 game" that was more like the first game,
but with TJ & Earl back on Earth giving a concert till they lose their CD's.
long story short, people gathered money, then drx said he didnt have the proto anymore.
longer story even shorter : he recently found it and its just an earlier version of the final TJE2 platformer.
Figured people might be interested to know how this story eventually ended.
I'm the one who got that proto :)
You got the story somewhat wrong, though. drx never had the cart, it was DreamTR. He got it from someone else years ago that told him it was "different from the released version," so when cataloging his protos one day he wrote that next to it on the list, which is what you can see in that big DreamTR thread on hidden-palace. Hurts how ambiguous stuff like that is worded.
Bought a couple other protos from him but one ended up being the wrong game, while the other didn't even work for me. Ah well ;/ TJ&E2 I plan to release eventually. If I try to ge funds back it will probably be something small than the original ROM dump price of $200, maybe something like $70.
That sounds awesome. Please tell when you plan to release it because i will donate for sure.
As for Beethoven, it was released in 2011 I think and although it was only 3 stages long and without music, I liked it very much. I will never give up hope to finally play Putty squad and the Flintstones game too.
Well, someone already is apparently sending me $20, so I guess it's officially started =p I'll PM you if you're interested, only cuz I don't know how appreciated it is to solicit money on these forums lol
If you wanna play those games I'd definitely check with drx on IRC. I imagine by now he might have lowered his expectations on prices and it might be something more doable now.
lol, well in retrospect those game's didn't cost what protos cost. That statement mostly applied to expensive items like protos.
Plus pirates aren't anything that typically have fundraisers, so it would have just not felt right. No pirates should cost so much that anyone needs to recoup any real losses.
