It's more a 'rip off' (if you could call it that, it's the same developer.) of Final Fantasy IV; Only now with the FFX battle system 'Side Bar' showing the combat character order. (In the japanese version at least.)

It's more in line with the anime "Steamboy" than "Skies of Arcadia" IMO, that may be because it's set on Earth.

Even so, aside from Airship battles & discoveries, the game looks more 'lived in' than SoA.

Hard to describe unless you played them. This game is not the Skies clone everyone expected, but a nice addition to the list of very few Steampunk RPGs that attempt to be 'vibrant and colorful' and not the bleak & depressing emo saves the world from space rock throwing mad-man part XXVIII standard, that the genre's been buried under.

I want 7th Dragon more than anyhing.

But seeing RED(Sakura Taisen) on this has piqued my interest.

Did I mention that the Final Fantasy X battle system (reminiscent of Grandia 2's battle system) is my favorite RPG system of all time?! It's so simple, and yet works so well. It's crazy how much a small tweak can benefit gameplay so much.

The game has been dumped, for the seedy villains lurking among us. Waiting for info on the pre-order bonus. (Canada gets the shaft yet again.)

The game is bascially Final Fantasy 4's Dungeon style & Skies of Arcadia's overworld. There's a skill system kind of like the sphere grid from FFX at first glance, with multiple paths from a starting point, with individual skill levels that require SP to go up. SP is a easy enough to get from random battles, so grinding into god-hood seems an option here.

I doubt it's as complex as the sphere grid system, and it's probably just a similar graphical representation wrapped around a system akin to Grandia's.

The dialogue/plot/whatever is like Skies of Arcadia in that it's optimistic instead of bleak, like Wild Arms & it's dystopia-driven presentation. I'm only a few hours into it.

It's not written by chimpanzees for pre-teen digestion though, so it's got 80% of the competition beat already! :ok:

The skill system is generic, you learn individual skills with character level, they appear on the grid, and spend SP to level them up. SP is a pooled commodity for every party member, not individually attained.

Grandia's big deal back on the PSOne/Saturn was the strategy involved in the action bar.

This game doesn't have nearly the focus on it, but it is there in FFX form on the left bottom screen next to status. Some skills will "Slow you down a turn" I guess, so it is functional. I haven't seen a heavy enemy reliance on delay tactics though, Grandia was phenominal in this respect.

You're getting RPG mixed in with JRPG. There's lots and lots of brilliant RPGs out there that aren't designed for twelve-year-old Japanese kids - the Fallout series (survive in a post-nuclear wasteland) is a brilliant example of an engrossing RPG, as is Mass Effect (Star Wars & Battlestar Galactica have a baby). Dead Space is more of a survival horror that contains RPG elements (weapon/suit upgrades), but is still an incredible game.

Well against my personal bias, and for a need for something to play I went and got a copy. Turns out I like it. Everything is simple strait forward exploring and battling. You don't have to spend hours fooling with cooking recipes and other crap. You can tell it really was the developer's intention to make an old school RPG. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention KD. I would have completely passed it by otherwise.
