Nintendo DS Successor: Nvidia wins contract for chipset.

Even if it was based on the first gen chipset, the performance would match that of the GeForce 6 series at least, which is more than enough for a dedicated handheld. The downside being power consumption, I'm sure Nintendo can weed out battery issues in R&D.

This leaked info has half the retarded puberty powered pokemon fanbase screaming "Ohh NOES! Nintendo would NEVER betray ATI!!!" & "I JUST BAWGHT A DSi!!! IF THEY RELEASE THIS NEXT YEAR I'LL SNAP!!!"

'Realistically', I would expect a showing at TGS next year, and possibly a holiday 2011 release for the unit :nod:

Man, Nintendo is really pumping out the DS systems. They need to slow down a bit. I have no problem with it, but I can sure as hell see plenty of whiny little fan boys crying about it. That's just what we need.

What does it matter what the fanboys think when they snatch another one up asap anyways. I just wanna know will they use DD or not.

This is hilarious! If Nintendo actually puts nVidia Tegra into the nextgen DS, the DS will be more powerful than the Wii. Won't that just piss off Wii owners even more! :D

I like how Nintendo said that the DS wasn't gonna replace the Game Boy.

How does GeForce 6 compare to the Cube/Wii "Hollywood" GPU?

More specifically, what ATi PC chipset was it based off of?

Nintendo says the Hollywood GPU is somewhere between an X1400 and X1600. So that would be slightly better than a 6xxx series nVidia. That would be if they used the current Tegra. Of course, the DS wouldn't be driving as large a display (probably), so it would perform better than you would otherwise think. And if they used the newer Tegra coming out, it would be that much better.

I skipped the DS, Lite and DSi. This might actually be the next handheld I buy.

Personally, I wouldn't wait almost 2 years for a new handheld cycle when the current one will be 5 years old in a months time with the best games library of any current hardware. Especially if the DS lite drops any further in price. The already cheap price, GBA library & Flashcard scene is just a bonus for that model.

Nintendo's "3rd Pillar" promise dissolved once the DS came alive and said: "Hey everybody! Look at me! I print Money!"

Not to mention the bootleg scene flooding the market, that killed Gameboy Advance support for sure.

Hmm, I find that somewhat hard to believe given the Wii's apparent lack of shader capabilities and the look of the games. What were they basing the comparison on, polygon throughput, fill rate, shader operations (Hollywood's fixed function isn't it?)?

Well I am seeing no game that shows a 6 series Nvidia chip equivalent in graphics by the Wii. Sega's Lindbergh is a 6800 Ultra and that is on par with 360 and PS3 graphics. So I estimate that the Hollywood is only about a powerful as a low end 5 series or a high end 4 series.

They weren't - the statement was just what one of Nintendo's engineers said in an interview without any reasons why. You can give them the benefit of the doubt, or you can claim they were maybe exaggerating for the interview. Anywho, the X1400/X1600 didn't have much in the way of shader capability in any case. If you remember, they used ATI's cheap DX9.0c class GPU.

Also, games only look as good as the effort the programmers and artists put into it. Nintendo Wii games are made fast and cheap - shovelware is the primary product of the Wii, so only occasional titles meant to be AAA will have the look you are expecting from that class of GPU.

Also, how do we know this isn't a completely different platform for another handheld? If they're going to make a different handheld, why still call it the DS? This isn't exactly an upgrade like we've seen before, it looks like a whole different gaming system. They might be going for something next gen altogether.

Also, is it too much to ask for a generic audio/video output? And make it stereo. :D
