What's funny is that I predicted that Baloo would be labeled a "Peanut Gallery Member" in the very beginning of this thread. 17days didn't disappoint.
He's not worth your time Baloo.
It always surprises me how people will defend the soulless money grubbing corporation that is ripping them off while lashing out at the people who are attempting to teach them a better way.
True. :ok:
This ^ = ROFL

Baloo, 2 separate trains of thought were expressed, and kind of muddled, 1 is that N is taking advantage of people with the service -which has no bearing on making money (and indeed would be advantageous so long as the major customer base's loyalty/oppionion toward n isn't hurt).
And 2- here the kicker- that N could possibly be makingsignificantly more money selling at lower prices.
They've got a product market here with basicly unlimited supply (only limits would be rate of distribution limits by servers), the cost is exceptionally low so profits are near 100%, the main limiting factor then would be the consumers, ie you can't sell more games than people want (they won't get games they're not interested in and won't be buying the same game more than once), so the optimal prices would be be the ones where you're selling to close to every consumer desiring the game. (of course there's always an equilbrium point -even in an extreme point like this, where you drop the price too low and the increase in purchaces doen't overcome the drop in price -but I don't think they've reached this yet)
And yes, it makes perfect sense to price games on how popular, but not on how expensive/rare they are to collect in real life. (but also not solely base prices on popularity as many games might be popular, but people being less willing to spend money for them)
So yeah. ;) Not pointless from a buisness/economics standpoint.
You know what would have been really nice, if they'd offered both a classic NES style mode plus upgraded mode, like they did with the Secret of Monkey Island remake. (with classic text-only 320x200 mode 13h VGA mode offered in addition to the remade graphics and voice acting)
I'd say it's way, way broader than that, any adolecent (say 9/10 and older) kid that's into video games and uses the internet should at least know of the existence of emulators, partiularly any who watch video game stuff on youtube, look at all the people playing rom hacks and doing "let's plays" and some of those are even pretty young kids. (maybe not 9/10, but early teens) Hell, my little brother was running N64 games on his PC before I had ever used an emulator (that was ~4 years ago, I was 16, he was ~11/12), it wasn't until about a year later that I finally started emulating for the express purpose of playing Star Fox 2. (in fact, it wasn't until I stared using fusion within this last year that I started collecting ROMs, and mainly for Fusion -Genesis, SMS/GG, CD, 32x the first one I got being Virtua Racing -which is among the few games I have now actually collected)
At the time, my brother couldn't even properly install+configure a PC game without help, but managed running the emulators fine (mainly N64 and SNES, I think Project 64, and SNES 9x). Most emulators are pretty straightforeward to use, just drag and drop the ROM file onto the emulator executable and it starts the game. (then the trickiest thing would just be configuring a controller -if you didn't care about display/audio options or such) Sega CD is a bit tricker as you need the bios. Certainly nothing like handling DOSbox (without a GUI front loader -although some games work fine just dragged and dropped, sometimes after an install)
We had been getting gaming magazines for a while (at the time, mainly just a Nintendo Power subscription, but some EGM too), but I'm positive we didn't find out about emulators from them (expecially Nintendo Power). It was probably either forums or youtube for my brother. (maybe a friend)
Discussing anything about the Wii on these boards gets thread-jacked & shifted into a perpetual troll argument with no merit other than to judge the capacity of those who would use the Wii or it's service. Mainly their ability to make logical decisions. This is irritating, & counter intuitive to the point of the topic.
The fact that 17daysolderthannes's argument comes across being only worthy of a 9 year is self defeating and trolling, regardless if there is some merit to what he is saying.
This argument would be fine, if it didn't encompass and consume nearly every relevant Wii thread that is actively discussed at any given time.
These boards need policing, all boards do.
Step up Melf, before you lose more regulars.
Duster,
I don't see the VC rants coming up in every thread addressing the wii, those are more specifc to VC related threads, plus some addressing similar downloadable services.
The more universal rants are more related to the controllers, selection of games, price of the base unit and/or accessories (-Chilly Willy commented specifically a couple times how they're getting away with selling rather old hardware at comparatively high prices). Which I totally understand as a Wii owner, but don't universally agree of course, I don't mind the casual games so much, but some of the crappier ports and such annoy me a lot more, and poor use of controllers without alternate GC or even Classic controller usage. (Blazing Angels being a prime example, but there are worse)
I just think so of the topic is interesting though. Again, I am appreciative for the heads-up for the free VC game. (the original topic ;))
edit: I think 17days is just particularly fed up with Nintendo givin his continual frutrating/dissapinting experiences, starting with the N64- I for one didn't really have issues with the N64 or GC, the Wii is a bit frustrating though, but I don't mind as much since we play the older consoles so much, and as always PC is there to temper things. (albeit now it's mostly older PC stuff, not least because my laptop is really weak for modern games) He's older than me thogh and got an N64 a lot sooner, I was in the prime age group (with my brother moreso being ~4 years younger) for the "kiddie" games and since we didn't get an N64 until the end of 1999, selection of games wasn't really a limiting factor. But I've mentiond all this before.
Steam is a model of digital distribution, guy. Trust me, it's the future. And I wasn't talking about iPhone gaming, I was talking about your Tec Toy made console. Wowee.

Who said anything about a turd vs. classic? I was saying losing $1 on a shitty VC game would be better than $8, just like losing $1 on a shitty iPhone game is better than losing $8 on a shitty iPhone game. You keep insisting that the iPhone sucks for some intrinsic reason and it's really ignorant to deny a console because of its roots. Nintendo was a playing card company first, didn't stop the Game and Watch games and later the Famicom from being a hit. $8 is a relative cost made up by Nintendo, we all know they could charge much less and make a killing due to volume sales. Again, don't support it just because that's the way it is now.
Holey Toledo! Did you read your own words before typing them? Take a second to ponder your arguments against the Wii. You're being hypocritical. And I have nothing against the iPhone itself. I own one. Here's a picture that I took on it, and uploaded with the photobucket app:

It's awesome, I love it. As a gaming platform, there's certainly potential, but most of the software I've used feels at worst like shitty freeware, and at best WiiWare/Xbox Live Arcade/PSN games. There's a lack of depth to the titles. There's some great software for sure, I really dig Zenonia for example, but I think your prediction that iPhone gaming will destroy console gaming is laughable.
Funny that you mention Fox News in this context, I was over at my grandma's (who reguarly had Fox News on -and we've only got broadcast at home anyway), and they mentioned a big Wii Bowling tuournament. ;) Didn't see that clip on youtube, but a lot of other stuff for "senio wii bowling tournament" there.
On that note, my grandma has no video game console whatsoever, and the last ones even in that house would be an Atari 2600 and Sega Master System, which my Uncle had. (who lives there as well, he gave the 2600 to good will more recently -to my dismay, but he promised me the SMS when he finds wherever they packed it away -and should have a loose 32x with it)
Well, hang on a minute. Having spent WAY too much time on GameSpot's forums and being overzealously modded for even slightly off-color remarks, I can say that Melf's "hands-off" approach is very refreshing. Melf and Joe won't step in unless things get REALLY out of hand. I like the fact that we are pretty much free to say whatever we want and deal with problems ourselves.
If 17days or Edge get moderated for saying something no one else likes, what next? That's opening up quite a can of worms, and I sincerely doubt that Melf wants to keep these forums on lock-down.
We're all reasonably intelligent & mature, so I think Melf is right to let us handle our own conflicts.
Indeed. If they were nothing but personal attacks, I would disagree but if they're just opinions, it's all right. Though. I was called a fucker and a douchebag on this topic even if I didn't participate.
