I got this Sonic cart in a lot of Genesis games but the label looks completely different from the one I have. It has a full body shot of Sonic against a peach background (the brown spots are stains from god knows what). The Sonic logo is blue. Anyone know what the deal with this is?

IIRC that's the canadian release with the original Japanese artwork. Any Canucks that can weigh in on this? More interesting to me is if it's REV01 that includes the additional background scrolling and corrected level select order when using the up down left right A+start cheat..

The picture is same as that in Euro PAL land... It looks odd seeing the Genesis lettering where Mega Drive should _clearly_ be! :-P
My copy of Sonic the Hedgehog is like that. Like 17days and KnuckleDuster said, it's a Canadian version of Sonic the Hedgehog. It's really common up here in Montreal, but I do sometimes find the US version every now and then.
Yep, Canuckian version of Sonic. Some copies have managed to find their way across the border over the years. :D
I remember being excited as hell when I first saw a copy of this many moons ago, thinking that it was an obscure, hard-to-find Sonic game that had escaped me, and later on an elusive version of Sonic 1. I figure that it is most likely identical to the REV 00 U.S release, as that was the ONLY revision that was out during the Genny's lifecycle, and the many re-releases of Sonic 1 just on the Genesis (2nd re-printing in 1992 w/circa-1992 "Sega Genesis 16-Bit Cartridge" logo, "Sega Classic" re-print in 1993 with red stripe box-art, 1995-1996 re-print with ESRB logo, 1996-1997 "Sonic Classics" re-release along with Sonic 2 and Mean Bean Machine)
I thought all the Canadian releases were just the US ones. Were there any other games like this?
I see what's the difference: There's a nasty spot right in the center of the label... coffee perhaps? :p
There probably were a lot like this. I bet they released it like this because of the fact that the back cover has French on it. So it was easier to just use the PAL art.Quote:

Notice how the box for Canadian Sonic 1 still mentions "Mega Drive" at the bottom of "16-Bit Cartridge". It was a hastily altered copy of the European version's cover art. Yeah, they most likely used it up north because of its multi-language back cover and instruction manual.
Glad they got rid of that hideous, second-rate "Sega Mega Drive" logo though. The ORIGINAL Japanese MD logo is best, followed by the U.S Sega Genesis logo. :D
Probably not as hastily as picking out the second Genesis "logo", the generic copperplate gothic font. I'd almost take the SNES logo before the Genesis logo. Almost. European MD logo wins - metallic futurism at its finest.
ya i have two carts like that , i think they put a sticker on the label cause everyone i seen is ripped like some tried to remove a sticker
I've also heard that "MERCS" has a rare Canadian variant with different cover art. Same game as the U.S release though.
I've seen a Taz Mania at a salvation army that was a Canandian release, but I dunno about the manual... the box did say MEGA DRIVE on the bottom, and had all of the languages that your typical PAL game has.
Did Revenge of Shinobi have its own Canadian release? I bought a US Revenge of Shinobi cart from a seller in North Dakota, and it had a PAL style manual.

Now these are pretty much like the euroland releases except they have a "Genesis" logo. On the back of the case the game is described in eight different languages. Also, all of these games come with instruction manuals that open vertically. Canada is a bilingual country (english & francais) so I guess SEGA was looking to push sales in Quebec (remember for 13% of our population french is the only language that they can speak)... I want to say almost every "grid" box had a Canadian variation up to a certain year.

I have a Ranger X that has the same style of manual (landscape, multiple languages). The cart is identical to the US version though.
I've got a copy of the REV01 game inside standard (REV00) PAL packaging, cartridge and all. I think the previous owner must have swapped the guts of a Japanese cartridge with the PAL counterpart or something.Quote:
