Not enough sports games on the SNES.
By the looks of Goodwill, yes too many.
Nothing wrong with having the choice, or a supply of donor carts.
Half the reason people complain about 'Too many sports games' is because they almost universally had a high print run & are usually the most common found in pawn shops & thrift stores. An 'obstacle' in finding a kick ass game of any other genre.
Then there's the abandonment factor of the genre itself, always obsolete by a progressive sequel, with just enough upgraded every 2 to 3 years, to warrant a purchase by fans.
There can never be too many sports games on the Genesis.
There ARE way too many shitty sports game on the Genesis. My next article is going to go in depth on one of them. I'll elaborate tomorrow.
Are you kidding??? EVERY 16-bit console in my area, whether it's the Super NES, Genesis, or the rare TurboGrafx game I see every now and then, is OVERLOADED with what I like to call "Sports bullshit." THIS is the reason why I hate going out to look for Genesis, Super NES and TurboGrafx games that I want because all there is around here IS SPORTS BULLSHIT!!! As such, I'm going to get those stupid shits(except for Hockey games - those are the only Sports games I give a damn about) and turn them into reproduction cartridges of games that are actually WORTH something(for me, it'd be something like Thunder Force II MD, R-Type III, Gradius III, After Burner II, Zero Wing's European ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US version, Thunder Force III, Thunder Force IV, Contra Hard Corps, Contra III, etc.), or in the case of some Genesis Sports games, homemade Power Base Converters.
All I ever seem to find these days in the thrifts are sports games for the SNES and Genesis, so yes, there's far too many floating around these days. IMO, the only thing they're good for is acting as donor carts for homebrews/repros.
Sports games are fine, except for the weird shaped EA ones. The Devil himself must have designed EA's carts.
Damn near every American console since the Genesis has too many sports games. When the consoles die out and their second-hand market dwindles, what's usually left for picking are the dirt-common games that everyone already has, pack-ins and sports games, all of which had large print runs and have no value after just a small while. So long as EA exists, this will be the case.
According to UVList.net, the SNES has more sports titles than the MD/G:Quote:

If you count the 32X and SCD, the MD/G has ~252 sports titles.
Only about 25% of the standard MD/G library (900+ games) was composed of sports titles, that's not as much as you'd think it would be.
Hey! Not even I am touching those with a 10-foot pole.
The thing about sports games in general is, in my opinion, if you want to play a sport, get a bunch of friends together, go out on a field and play the sport for real. I mean, seriously. I like games because they allow me to do things I cannot do in real life. Sports I could play in real life, if I actually gave a damn that is.
There are only two sports games in existence that I ever liked:
NBA Jam T.E.: Because it is so ridiculously over-the-top, and it allows you to play basketball with Bill fucking Clinton! Now there's something you can't do in real life.
Fifa '98: Because you could tackle the keeper right after he caught a ball, after which you would get this hilarious motion-captured sequence where your player got a red card. They took out that feature with Fifa '99 ffs!
Yeah - he was having something of a dry period, creatively. The Devil founded EA as well. It actually stands for "Eternal 'amnation" - the misunderstanding having been created thanks to the devil having a recent filling - there's a lot of dentists in Hell - and a particularly stupid demon, who didn't quite understand English. He locked them in a room tied to a chair, with Rick Astley singing his famous masterwork. Silly Devil.
... I know, ignore me. I'm just rambling because there are obviously too many sports games on the Genesis, it's just obviously obvious ;)
I've said it before, but I'm seriously considering throwing away the crappy sports games that have come in the wholesale lots I've bought. Any objections?
That being said, Road Rash 2 (or 3) is the only EA game worth owning. They haven't made another one since.
Trip Hawkins is the devil? :p
Were there too many sports games? No, at least not back in the day. They tended to sell really well and helped really establish the Genesis/MD. Now though it is a bit annoying that all the second hand games I see in shops tend to be John Madden 9x ones.
yea yearly updates are a moneymaker
that may have funded other games like b.o.b.
this is my favorite commercal from the sega
You know, I think you could actually make a case perhaps, though he'd be a slick and smooth devil indeed :p
Well, as I see it, early on the many sports titles were what gave the Genesis its first influx of popularity; unfortunately sports titles age very badly (especially when there are yearly updates on certain franchises), so of course one would consider the mass of sports titles available as junk nowadays

Obvious nerd-rage is obvious.
Dreamcast 2K/Virtua sports games > Genesis sports games
Allow me to echo Ace’s sentiment on “sports bullshit.” Everyone tells me how common, cheap, easy to find [insert game I’m actually looking for here] is (hello, Ristar) but do I ever find one when I go some place where they have Genesis carts on offer? No. What do I find? 10,000 “different” games with John Madden’s name in the title.
I don't think of it as too many "different" sports games released for the Genesis as much as too many of each particular sport title released for it being sold/printed.
Haha, my friend Colin uses a copy of Fifa 95 as a "cleaning cart" of sorts.
IE: He drowns it in polish, sticks it in the MD, apparently cleaned pins.
Absolutely. A perfect example: After Burner II, a game I'm having all the trouble in the world trying to find. ClassicGameRoom, when the guy reviewed After Burner II said that the game is dirt cheap and common. I've been to game stores in Montreal, Quebec; Mississauga, Ontario; and Plaistow, New Hampshire, and did I find a copy? ABSOLUTELY NOT! But what do I see? THE SAME OLD SPORTS BULLSHIT I'VE SEEN SINCE THE DAY I GOT MY FIRST GENESIS IN 2006! Oh, but it FLOODS eBay. After Burner II is EVERYWHERE on eBay, no matter the region(with the US version being most common).
That's very interesting. I certainly would have thought the opposite. If you look at just western games, though, I'd imagine it would be a lot closer since the Mega Drive was both virtually non-existant in Japan and had a shorter lifespan internationally (and certainly domestically in North America) than the SNES.
I object. Don't throw them away, at least donate them to charity, someone else might want them beleive it or not.
I've had my Genesis for just under 20 years now, and I've just started collecting sports games, probably because I've collected just about everything else. If you throw them in the garbage, those games won't be there in a thrift store in another 20 years for future generations to discover.
Also, if someone see's a Sega Genesis in a thrift store for $5 with no games, they might not even think about buying it, but if there are a few games they might pick it up.
Some people might laugh and say that no one will want to play these games in 20 years because they don't age well but in the last little while I have bought a few Atari 2600 sports games including Tennis, Basketball, Boxing and Ice Hockey and they're actually a lot of fun.
Sega Genesis sports games have their place in video game history. Some are good and some are bad but throwing them away will deprive someone else from experiencing them for themselves. They're also a good way of building a significant collection of Sega genesis games for little money.
I think there are too many football and baseball games for the Genesis. Don't get me wrong. I like NBA Jam games. Those are always fun to play with friends. Since I suck at basketball at the moment.Don't throw away the sports games. You are throwing away a small piece of gaming history. Donate them, so that others can enjoy them.
you could have titled it "Too Many Sports Games On The Genesis!" and i think most would have agreed i know i do!
Yea kinda. And most of them are kinda subpar imo. But same goes for the SNES i guess.
I haven't scrutinized ever response closely, but it doesn't seem like anyone mentioned this yet: It makes perfect sense foe the Genesis to have so much sports stuff, that was one of the key selling points and part of the demographic they were shooting for. It also has a few that some people still enjoy as good/unique games in their own right. Still, I'm not really one of those and it's true that pretty much every console will have an excess of sports titles in thrift stores. (unless they throw them out)
Huh, I thought Mark said it would cost you a bit more in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydpqmVtfzug
On that note, I'm sure most here already know about the erronious box art with an F-15 instead of F-14; strangely enough Great America did the same thing in the disply outside their "Flight Deck" coaster (remodeled Top Gun), and in that case they have a picture of a carrier full of F-14s in the background behind the prominent pair od F-15s...
Edit: at 5:40 he mentions it's common but "not one of the least expensive" maybe $5-10 depending on the condition and if you hunt arround.
That said AfterBurner 32x seems like it might be cheaper. (and a much nicer game overall IMO -although I think I might like the Genesis music better, at least for some tracks) Too bad AB3 on Sega CD was crap, a nice port of ABI/II using the scaling ASIC along with PCM chip (clear, multichannel soud effects and speech) and that CD soundtrack. (which was used in the excellent FM Towns version of AfterBurner) I've mentioned it before, but what could have been awsome would have been a Sega Ages like compilation for Sega CD. (with near perfect conversions of Out Run, AB/II, Altered Beast, Space Harrier, and a much more playable port of Galaxy Force/II than the crap on Genesis)
How about Haunting? That is a fun and quirky little title. Also, the Desert Strike/Jungle Strike/Urban Strike series account for some of my fondest Genesis memories. They also published a number of really off-the-beaten-path titles early on in the MG/Genesis lifespan which really added some diversity and flair to the game line up. Games such as Zany Golf and Power Monger.
Later in life they went with where the money was: sports titles. But they still did a fair number of worthwhile games outside the sports arena (pun intended).
There is a purveying belief that sports games on any console are crap. Personally, I'm glad that this genre of gaming is not sought after! It only means that I can purchase these complete games dirt cheap!
As with any genre of games, there will be crappy titles that will not be able to hold your attention span for even a minute. But there are gems to be had if you take the time to play them. It's fun to pick your favourite team and see a particular player's stats at the time! It's like walking down memory lane when you pick up the controller and play!
Let me also state that there is a high replay value in sports games that many people tend to forget! Amen to that! :)
I have any entire box full of Snes sports games. I'll sell you the whole box plus shipping for $20. :)
Sure pm the list of games and I'll take a look at it! But I should warn you, I am first and foremost a collector of SEGA Genesis/Megadrive related items. The SNES is a close second but second nonetheless! ;)
Anyone else use sports games as drink coasters? I've got Bill Walsh '95 and Madden '95 and they make for great coasters.
Lots of sports games, yea, but if you want some of the best ever the Genesis is it. I'll still play Madden '95 and Tecmo Super Bowl on the SNES once in a while but the Genesis is still king. Also, with a Nomad or newer portable Genesis system they're good to go - on the go! :D
*Note: The Genesis still has the best NHL series to this day - pretty darn cool!
There are too many sports game full stop. Boring, boring, boring... apart from racing. I won't be too opinionated though - if they're what people like, then by all means have them! :p
Just a quick question in this thread... Do y'all consider racing games sports games? Or does it depend on maybe the licensing of a racing game to be considered a sports game?
i guess my opinion on this.. I probably wouldnt consider Hard drivin' a sports game, but Nascar obviously.
yea in my own mind the sports titles are kind of odd sometimes
like i wouldnt really count cyberball as a sports title since its an arcade port
but say high impact football that was an arcade game but i would call that a sports game
i suppose i would more likely classify a game as a sports game the more realistic it is intended say superbaseball 2020 technically a sports game but its so odd that i wouldn't call it a sports game
its a hard definition to make
i would like to just say any game with a the date when it came out in the title that plays sports is one
car racing is a sport but you are not really playing as a person you are playing "the car" like with say "outrun"
is "hang on" a sports title or are you just playing the motorcycle trying to fling off that maniac hanging on for dear life
is zany golf a sports title?
how about fishing?
seems when people complain about the sports titles and you ask them to name the first sport that pops into their mind
its probably football then hockey then baseball
I never considered gamers who only or mostly played sport games.... gamers. I had a cousin who was like that. Ugh! God, sports games in general suck. And there are way too many of them. You can thank all the non gamer jackasses who mostly only bought sports games for that. They're the reason why you see all the stacks of sports titles at pawn ships and used game stores. From the 16bit era alll the way up to the PS2 era.
