I mean I liked it at first swimming through mazes and solving puzzles and what not but once the novelty wore off it became extremely hard I tried beating it with a Game Genie but my game froze and now it won't work anymore. It starts up and just displays graphical garbage.

At first i thought it was gay to be honest :| I mean dolphin <.< I Kept swimming around in circles and circles jumping and shit not knowing what to do lol :P But I started play it again and found it was pretty cool :3
its a great game. that sucks though that your copy broke. it was just bad luck.

I really enjoyed it on the Sega CD with the great, atmospheric music. When I rented it on cartridge before the Sega CD version came out, I didn't think too much of it. That just goes to show that bad-sounding music can hurt a game.
It's one of the few games my ex-wife and I both enjoyed (and she wasn't a gamer at all). It's really a great game, now and then.
If anything it's underrated. It definitely seems to be dismissed rather easily, which is a shame (I did it too back in the day, regrettably). The Sega CD game is the way to go, IMO. The music is great. Same goes for the sequel.
I love Ecco and will defend his first two games to the death! Even with the high difficulty level, I feel that Ecco the Dolphin is basically perfect. It's really unlike anything else out there.
I never saw why people liked this series, or the revamp on DC. It just looks so.......boring. Not my cup of tea. Can't play any Ecco game long enough for it to hold my interest.
It definitely isn't perfect. It's a great concept though, controlling a dolphin instead of a space ship or yet another Rambo clone. And it is quite impressive, both technically and artistically, with fantastic graphics (the graphic artist was only 19 at the time he did Ecco 1!) and awesome music - especially in the Sega CD version, as jerry coeurl mentioned.
The problem with the game itself however is the level design. So your tasks get way too complex way too soon and solving them is tedious and boring. While I don't have much of a problem with the controls, collision detection is pretty off, which makes certain tasks nearly impossible to solve.
The game would have been so much better with half the number of levels, and some additional testing and polishing.
Still, all in all it's not a terrible game. I can find much of the same flaws in practically all of the most highly regarded [Western developed] Mega Drive / Genesis games, like Comix Zone, Vectorman, Earthworm Jim, Mickey Mania, etc.
- I am definitely looking forward to give Tides of Time another chance.
Btw, there are some interesting Ecco fansites with some more info, like Dark Sea and Caverns of Hope.
Ecco the Dolphin is a game for real men. If anyone thinks otherwise just go ahead and try to beat it.
It's one of those that separates rookies from vets.
Dismissing this game due to the cuteness of the graphics and/or theme is a huge mistake.
And Joe, I disagree, I haven't heard the CD version yet, but I think the music in the cart is totally awesome.
I haven't really dove into it (get the joke?) too much, but what I did play was kind of boring and you are never told where to go.

I never liked it either, I hate any puzzle based platform/adventure game. If I wanted to wander around aimlessly going "WHAT THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO!?" I would take LSD.
As for your cartridge: alcohol+q-tip is your friend. Swipe the wet side, then the dry side, repeat until it's clean, let it air dry completely, enjoy.
It's undeniable that the graphics of the Ecco series are just stunning for Genesis. :o I have yet to play it because I only have Tides of Time and I want to play the original before delving into its sequel. However, I was letting the demo play for Tides of Time and my jaw was on the floor. :daze: Good lord, the art direction and musical score for this game are out of this world!
