Was the second game any good?
Well, if you like platformers, which most people do, then you would like Panic on Funkotron. In a lot of ways, the game was advanced for its time, having a lot of conversations with characters and some physics-like mechanics when it came to throwing jars. I personally liked the first one more because it was like Rogue, which is similar to a dungeon crawler. The 3rd game, Mission to Earth, which failed miserably, was like a cross between the first one and Donkey Kong 64 (which is the same way that Mr. Johnson described it).
That's a stupid rule. Games =/= movies for one thing. Street Fighter IV didn't suck and sold really well. How the hell would a DS version of the first ToeJam & Earl with 4-player multiplayer sound like it's going to suck? Did A Boy and His Blob suck after 20 years of non-existence? No, so please stop with the negativity. You guys are just pissing me off with your nonsense. Games only suck if you make a new one every year *cough*Sonic*cough*.
Where did I say suck? You're putting words in my mouth. I said not live up to the original.
A TJ&E update or remake should hit "iPhone/ZuneHD" without a 'Part 4' in the title.
It would certainly boost any small publisher's catalog for that market, or even a large publisher looking to expand in that market with credible Intellectual Properties.
Then there's the probability that most who would casually remember TJ&E would sooner own a smart-phone/iPod than a DS these days.
Wind Waker was just as good, if not better
When Johnson was asked this:
"Speaking of WiiWare and other low cost non publisher options; wouldn't that be a viable option for a ToeJam and Earl game?"
To which Johnson responded:
"Perhaps. I am thinking about how I might accomplish that some day. When you're young and single and can live on very little making a new indie game is possible - though never easy. To do something like a TJ&E game, it requires reaching some minimum bar of quality and it still costs money to hire people and keep the lights on for 6 months or 9 months, or however long it takes you.
Right now my studio is committed to doing other things and I can't consider it, but I have been VERY moved by all of the reaction from the TJ&E fans. I will try and find a way to revive TJ&E somehow.
I really never expected this type of reaction. You may think you're not able to make a difference by chatting on these boards, but it does make a difference. Keep expressing yourselves. Developers read these things."
If you've seen the whole video it would make more sense. It was just a tech demo showing off the Gamecube's capabilities. They featured other things as well, here:
Nothing was rally set in stone at that point I'm guessing. Except possibly a few launch titles. Also, I wouldn't go as far as to say Wind Waker was a let down. People were just slightly put off by the cartoonish appearance. I heard nothing but good reviews for it when it came out.
