New RPG for TG16 - Mysterious Song!

Pre-orders for the long awaited RPG "Mysterious Song" for the Turbo Grafx 16 Super CD are finally open! This is a full game complete with old skool, hand drawn cinematic sequences and voice acting [that doesn't suck!]. Slated for a March 1st, 2010 release. The first 25 orders have been filled, but we're considering extending the collector's item to the first 50 orders now.

I was wondering when the TG16 was going to get a homebrew release. Oh well, it definately doesn't seem like my kind of game. Graphics are similar to Sorceror's Kingdom on Genesis.

TG16 has already had three homebrew releases, with Insanity just very recently released. This is only the beginning :) .

Interesting. But I have to say that I'm disappointed to see what look like reduced-color photos used for the battle backgrounds. Aren't those going to be hand drawn pixel scenes like the overworld tile sets? They'd look and fit in a lot better.

Mysterious Song (Revised) is actually a complete remake of a famous old QBASIC RPG from 1999 by DarkDread. The original had per-rendered battle backgrounds, so we decided to keep them. Originally the results we had in the conversion process weren't that great, so later on we were able to convert them much better. But with a new app we recently found, the backgrounds are going to getting yet another face lift with dithering to help blend colors and add texture.

Not only that, but we're considering adding an option in the game to allow the backgrounds to utilize a neat coding technique that shifts the dithered pixels quickly to produce a really great looking color blending effect. The reason it's an option is because the effect only looks good at 60fps, and even though MSR (Mysterious Song Revised) won't drop below that, some emulators tend to lag the effect.

So has anybody seen this game in action? Does it play well, what kind of RPG is it most similar to?

It plays like Dragon Warrior/Phantasy Star. You get up to three party members. The main quest from the original game is comparable in size to Dragon Warrior/Ys. There is an extended section/super dungeon with extra story and ending.

There are voice acted cinemas similar to 16-bit CD RPG games. Many unlockable bonus features including a very special mini-game.

Well, that sounds completely awesome. Dangit, that would blow a month's gaming budget. I hope it will be around for a few more months.
