Sega Gear: TecToy MD Play

2009 has been a great year for Genesis hardware. No fewer than three different machines were released during the past twelve months, and most of them are portable. We've already covered the Genesis Portable system, but did you know an SD card-compatible version with six buttons was released in Brazil? Well, there was, and it's called the MD Play. Released by none other than TecToy, it has some interesting features the American and European versions lack. Read the latest installment of Sega Gear to get the scoop!

Great article. The system does look nice.

I guess it is a "step in the right direction" for new Genesis systems, but it's disappointing that each of these new systems has new problems, such as with the color and sound distortions mentioned in the article. If only someone would just make it right for once!!!

Hey, at least we know it has SD card support and you can use your ROMs on them, your legal ROMs that is.

The Company "Millenium" will sell these things in Germany as well come Christmas season.

Mos def! It'll go by the name of "MegaDrive Deluxe SD" and will be sold in the Weltbild online store.

Is there a limit to how many roms you can add?

If it takes a 2gb SD card, I'd imagine you could store the entire Genesis library.

Those handheld Sega's are becoming pretty good, now if only they'd fix those emulation bugs.

Would be sweet if we could just use 1 SD card for both the NEO flashcard and a handheld.

So eh.. if any of the people responsible for this thing are reading this, fix those things i mentioned and I'll buy 2. :D

Gp2X Wiz + Picodrive. Emulates even Virtua Racing, and the sound is perfect. Also you can play another systems apart from Mega Drive:)

Wow, all these Atgames Megadrive Handhelds. Somehow i just want one for the heck of it. Now if only they stop using the same crappy sound emulation as all the other ones from the same company.

But a handheld with an SD card slot? I'm pretty interested.

Ditto. These one-platform handhelds with crappy built-in emulation are an absolute waste of money IMO (though they do make for good forum debates :) ); the GP2X Wiz is twice the cost of this thing, but the emulation thru PicoDrive is reportedly fantastic, you can play thousands of games from all the classic consoles, listen to music, view photos & videos, read ebooks, record audio, etc. If you don't want to spend that much money, buy a used PSP fat for $70 (or moddable slim for a bit more), mod it, buy a 16GB memory stick for $60, and go to town. I'm currently a PSP+PicoDrive person myself, but might have to give the GP2Z Wiz a try sometime. PicoDrive on the PSP is damn good, but I hear that on the GP2X Wiz, it's pretty close to perfect. Notaz really is a genius. I must say that the gadget that's really got me salivating though is the hopefully-still-upcoming Pandora.

All that said, if a strictly Sega Genesis handheld was released that actually had nigh-perfect emulation of both graphics and sound, had a screen as tall as the PSP's and better quality (the PSP screen admittedly isn't the best, but I bet it's at least as good as the screens in these handhelds), was SD card compatible, was affordably priced at no more than $50, and was actually designed to look like the old console, black (no orange trim, thanks) with the Sega and Genesis logos properly painted in place and not on some cheezy sticker, then I might think about getting one for the serious nostalgia freak in me. Otherwise, it just wouldn't be worth it, despite the fact that it has an accurate six-button layout, the only possible advantage I can see; I can get used to using the PSP's L and R buttons for the extra two during MK and SFII marathons, rather than trade off emulation quality and incredible versatility. Bottom line, if I want to play Sega Genesis on the go, I want the games to play and sound as accurately as possible, so why would I waste money on a dedicated Genesis handheld with lousy built-in emulation that doesn't play the games nearly as well as another device which can play games from tons of other retro consoles too, plus ripped PS1 games (PERFECTLY), plus PSP games, plus photos/music/videos, plus surf the web via Wi-Fi? It just don't make-a-no-sense. :confused:

I would prefer something that uses real hardware instead of emulation. It would be more expansive but it should be possible to come up with a damn fine handheld that uses original hardware and still has a nice screen and decent battery life.

I absolutely agree, although I figured that would be too much to hope for. I would DEFINITELY buy one that used real hardware for perfect gameplay and had a nice-sized and good quality screen, with good battery life, a D-pad as good as the one in the six-button controller, the six button layout, was compatible with both American and Japanese cart sizes, was SD flash compatible for those who don't want to lug a bunch of carts around, and was black with official Sega and Genesis/Megadrive logos painted on it.

A tall order, I suspect. Until then, if less-than-perfect emulation must be used, might as well maximize value for money and mod a PSP or get a Wiz, instead of throwing it away on one of these junkers that have worse emulation and only play Genesis games.

much agreed. Until they make one with the real hardware I think anything else is a waste of money.
