So because your kid learned something he could've learned in 5 seconds with a picture book, suddenly that makes up for the terrible abomination that is Dora the Explorer? There are better educational shows, that's all I'm saying. Even Sesame Street blows the pants off of Dora.

I love how not having a kid of my own automatically means I've never spent time with a human being under the age of 20. Dora sucks, no need to cry about it. Wait, what am I doing? you like the Wii, obviously you don't know anything, why am I arguing?

Well certainly I've seen kids watching these shows. But you're right that we can't really ascertain how much exactly kids are getting from them.

I'm not making any judgments on parents! I was just saying that I think a lot of parents will probably think some shows are more educational than they really are, especially if they don't really sit down and watch them. In fact some shows are downright misleading, in that they seem more educational than they really are!

Good points. Actually I think Dora is probably one of the more stimulating / educational of the kids' shows out there. Blue's Clues also probably is as well, given the right age of the viewers.

When I agreed w/ 17days about those two shows, he was talking about kids passively watching and "zoning out," but really people will "zone out" for a lot of TV, despite what shows they're watching. I think the educational value of these shows can be overestimated by parents, especially if their kids are used to watching tons of TV very passively, but they are still probably two of the better kids' shows.

But I still freakin' hate Barney. lol

And Baby Einsteins is a pleasant show, but really Disney went too far to market it as educational, and it's also unbelievable that they're actually paying angry parents over it!

Some of us need to be realistic with our judgement on children's programming. A program directed at preteens (like, I don't know, Bill Nye, perhaps?) is going to go straight over the heads of Dora's target audience. The fact that someone could consider these two shows interchangeable shows a degree of ignorance that is laughable.

Oh, and to judge a kid's cartoon by its animation is ridiculous. For one, kids are unaffected by trifling details like the quality of its animation. Have you gone back and watched Thundercats recently? Or the original Transformers? Or GI Joe?

Not exactly Disney quality, if you know what I mean.

Actually, it goes much further than that. Baby Einsteins made kids dumber. A study made in the U.K showed that kids learned less words for every hour spent watching Baby Einsteins than children who didn't.
