I actually took that picture last night. I call it "the fresh prince of Mexico." Nothing like a ?40? year old immigrant with a "fresh" tilt on his hat. (the quality sucks because I was kinda far away and therefore had to crop alot and there was probably dust on the lense as well since I have a case on my iPhone. Darkness also kills iPhone picture quality).

We (any of us who live in North America) are immigrants one way or another. Either 1st generation, or 6th generation it really doesn't matter.

I'm glad that I live in a country that welcomes immigrants.

Well the way I see it. Back in the great immigration era of the US. We didn't demand that everyone speak German since that was like the largest non-english speaking immigrant group. Now they expect us all to speak Spanish and waste label space on soup cans for bi-lingual instructions. If you're going to live in the US at least try to speak English. I mean in Russia I don't have to speak Chinese, and we get a bunch of them near the borders. They learn Russian, or they have a hard time with the other people.

Don't you think that bi-lingual labels might help people learn English?


Also... if I was living in another country, even if I could speak/understand the native language, I would want to continue using my own language too. For example, I know that if I went to Spain I'd still want to speak English sometimes and read English-language books. It's only fair.

I think the real issue that people are hinting at is best explained like this.

Imagine you moved from Scotland to Spain, but you decided to never bother learning Spanish.

While I personally don't think there is some large Mexican population out there adamant that they only speak Spanish, I think it is more of the usual "First generation doesn't know much English, but the 2nd/3rd will know it well" like every other group of immigrants that has ever come here.

I wasn't aware that identifying someone's likely national origin based on physical and cultural cues made you a racist. I have seen plenty of confirmed Mexican immigrants to be able spot small cultural cues like the way they stand, talk, and interact, all of which I saw while he and his family were at the gas station. Last I checked, being a racist was when you genuinely believed one race was superior to another, and I don't remember going "OMFG DUMBASS MEXICAN PROBABLY ON WELFARE CUZ HES SO DUMB!", which would be a racist statement to make. People don't even know what racism is anymore...
