Jerry Glanville's Pigskin Footbrawl

Our latest review gives us a sort of another interpretation, and it comes in the form of a Genesis port of the Bally/Midway arcade hit Pigskin 621 A.D. The home version got a name change due to a questionable endorsement by NFL coach Jerry Glanville. Forget the refs and the rules friends; this one is all about bringing the pain! Shouldn't that be Jerry Glanville's Pigskin Footbrawl? This is the first time I've ever heard of this game, but since the box and title screen to the left of the article say Footbrawl, as does the text of the article, I assume the title is just a typo.

That is odd isn't it?

Not only that, what's with the Hank Williams Jr. get-up? "Are you ready for some football!" *BANG* *BANG* *BANG* [Fires gun into the air].

So here I am, this Euro guy who's never got into American Football (soccer, on the other hand, all that you want) and who never played football games (not Madden, nor Joe Montana) that just fires on this thing and… Well, let's say that 31 years later, this has aged way better than its brothers Arch Rivals and Hit the Ice.
Glanville was so right appearing in this game brandishing a gun: This is a bang, and a loud one! So OK, you can play one match only, and there are only two teams, but, man, every match played on this is hilarious! It's too bad this game appeared before the multitap: With four players, this could have been one of the greatast party games on our system.
Graphics are on the simplistic side: well drawn and funny sprites running their ass off, fighting, sighting Elvis and crashing on obstacles within bland backgrounds that have absolutely no need to be fancy. Sound comes almost verbatim from Arch Rivals and the single musical piece that accompanies the action is adequate. Controls are solid and gameplay… Well, gameplay is crazy: both if you just button mash your way into the scoring area or follow a tactic (easy toggled with the button A), this is all about quick fun without having to learn anything: just go and laugh a lot.

Given the years that have passed by, this may be one of the best sports (?) games on the system.

This is a truly fun game. Bought it new back in the day and have spent countless hours vs friends and the cpu alike. Easily one of the best sports games on the system. I still feel like many people have never given this game a shot.
