Is it just me or is this game nowhere near as great as it's made out to be? It's still a solid entry into the series but I can't help but think that it has the nostalgia factor working heavily in it's favor.

I like it a lot, but the unnecessary Mode 7 sequences detract from the game rather than help it, IMO. The graphics and sound are overrated, but the gameplay is great. I love the controls, except for the fact that you can't jump off stairs. I definitely think it's better than any of the 8-bit games, but I prefer Bloodlines a smidge.
It's a helluva lot better than the NES games. It controls way better, has great music, and is actually accessible for newcomers. I can't speak on Bloodlines because I've never played it. SCV4 and Bloodlines seem to me to be the last real CV games before they started that metroid crap. I can't stand how they release one almost every year now. They all seem the same. I really hope rebirth brings the series back to its linear-clearcut path roots.
It's mostly just you. The Mode 7 parts were great, like the rotating roomwhere you had to hang with your whip. I don't recall any "needless" mode 7, certainly no more needless than the graphical effects in, say, Batman & Robin for the Genesis.
Fantastic game.
That's one of the parts I hated the most, just seemed like an unneeded gimmick. I mean it's sorta cool the first time but after that it just becomes a chore. Bloodlines has certain segments like that too that are innovative, but you're actually participating in them as opposed to being reduced to watching the clock while the room rotates at a snail's pace.
I don't dislike Super Castlevania IV, I just don't think it's anywhere near being the best game in the series as a lot of people claim. It's just too slow and easy for me to consider it a great Castlevania game. The levels pretty much suck up until you get to the Treasury, the only level before that I can remember is the Cave. The bosses are pathetic and boil down to slugfests. I just can't see how people think it's superior to other games in the series like Dracula X, Chronicles, Symphony, Dracula's Curse, etc.
It's not the best game in the series, but it is better than Bloodlines. Dracula X is better (the PC Engine original, not the abortion that is the PSP port). Symphony of the Night is also better, but then again that game is in a different genre. Castlevania 4 is definitely better than part 3, though. It is far more playable. Chronicles is a rehash of previous games and not a game in its own right.
But you can whip in 8 directions! Durrr....
Castlevania 4 was a great game, and when it came out the rotating room wasn't a 'Gimmick', it was a mind-fuck game changer.
I like Bloodlines more than it though, graphically handicapped or not, it's gameplay is faster & I like the story's direction in bringing in Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Coincidentally, it's December. Castlevania The Adventure ReBirth came to WiiWare on the 20th anniversary of the Japanese release of the original gameboy title. The NA version came out in Dec 1989, so if that logic holds up, we could be rocking a new 'old' Castlevania on Wii before Christmas. Hopefully next Monday. :ok:
Uneducated & pretentious, teenage know-nothings who worship the SNES despite being in diapers when it was on it's way out?
I too think SCV4 is the best entry. 8-way whipping really goes a long way to alleviate the incredibly frustrating limitations in every other version of the game. The original is classic and has a very "Super Mario Bros." (original) kind of iconic controls to it. The second was stupid. The third had some nice features, but really didn't improve on the first IMO besides perhaps some graphical effects. SCV 4 pwned the world. Bloodlines was pretty good, but it was a step back next to 4, perhaps 8-way whipping would've helped it some, I'd probably still give it second place though. CS 64 was fun, but a bit too drawn out, but I like it more than most people. Symphony of the Night is a steaming pile of item collecting dogshit and I have no idea what anyone sees in it, it's fucking terrible. What a waste of graphics and artwork. I haven't played the PC Engine Dracula X enough to know where it falls into everything, but I imagine I would still put it behind SCV 4.
In a related story, I despise Zelda, Metroid, and all other needless wandering horseshit games.
i love the way you can controll the whip/chain i can play around with that for hours
After going back and replaying Bloodlines and Chronicles, I can definitely re-affirm that CV IV is just as slow as I originally thought. I think that's mainly what is throwing it off for me, that and a few other minor gripes. If the first 3/4ths of the game had been like the last 1/4th though I'd have no problem accepting it as one of the best Castlevanias. I would've enjoyed it a lot more if it hadn't been called Castlevania and if I'd gone into it with no preconceived notion of what I thought it was going to be like.
Bloodlines is a really good game but there's just not enough of it there. I don't really consider it a step backward to CV4 though, playing as Eric Lecarde is basically the same as playing as Simon. The level design is really innovative and they throw a lot of stuff at you, but sometimes it can be a bit too goofy for it's own good.
I like the first 3/4ths of SC4 better than the last 3/4ths. SC4 is no slower than the NES incarnations. In fact it is probably a bit faster. SC4 rules!
it might not be slower but it still pales in comparison to Castlevania 3, but to be fair so do all the other Castlevania games.
