iPhone gotta haves/sale thread

with all of the glorious ports of Genesis, SMS, Arcade, and other games making the iPhone, I thought a thread was in order to recommend excellent clones or re-releases of vintage games or to highlight sales of said games. Preferably sticky ;) .



First off, Cobra Command is on sale for 99 cents right now and it is NOT to be missed. This is the original Laserdisc game that has been tweaked for iPhone play. I can't get over how spectacular this game is for 1984 and how good of a job they did combining a rail shooter with FMV animation. At 99 cents, if you have an iPhone and you DON'T buy it, you deserve to have $10 stolen from you for being so stupid. Don't forget to turn of the accelerometer controls though, just use the joystick to turn when necessary.

Another game to pick up is the SMS answer to Zelda->Golvellius: Valley of Doom. The price has been returned to the $1.99 price point (it was 99 cents for a short while), but it's still a small fraction of buying the real game and has the ability to drop save states anywhere, which is really nice.

Of course, you can emulate these too, but not on an un-jailbroken iPhone, and at these prices, it's worth it just to get it legitimately rather than downloading some MAME CHDs for hours on end (since the only place to get them is pretty much torrents).

Another great addition is Chuck Norris: Bring on the Pain. Combine Metal Slug and Streets of Rage with a big roundhouse kick and you get Chuck Norris: Bring the Pain. This game is awesome beyond awesome, though I find the controls to be a little "jittery" and sometimes your thumb will obscure the action. Hopefully they will tweak the controls in an update or include tilt control since there are no double-direction-tap moves. Still, for 99 cents, not to be missed.

I've got Golvellius, which was an awesome surprise edition to the SEGA roster, as well as Golden Axe. SEGA's asking too much for most of their titles, but it is cool to be able to have save states whenever. Oh, I have Columns, too, but at this point I can't even consider it a retro game because the format still thrives.

Can everyone stop crying crocodile tears about the iPhone? For fucks sake people, it's $100 for the 3G with a plan and the mandatory unlimited data is only $30 extra, which is the same you'll pay for any other smartphone. It's funny how people bash clone hardware when it comes to Genesis consoles but when it comes to phones you'll gladly take the cheap ripoff over the real deal. You can't evaluate Apple products based on the stat sheet, it's the synergy of the parts that you get with Apple that you never find anywhere else.

yeah, they do charge too much for many of their titles, but still less than Wii. I really wish they would add tilt controls to Sonic like they did for Streets of Rage, especially since tilt controls suck for Streets of Rage but would be a perfect match for Sonic (tilt left and right and jump...it's all you need).

As for iPod games, Square Enix has recently jumped in & they're pricing titles at $9.99 IIRC. That trend could catch on & crush momentum along with recent Apple abandonment by application developers fed up with the inability to update their own products on their own.

I really want a ipod touch or iphone but the Droid from Vzn is looking good. Do both platforms have the same games. Kinda how XBLA and PSN do?

Nokia USED to rule the world, the N-Gage QD was quite ahead of its time, but nowadays they've fallen back to the background.

The iPhone is an insanely versatile device being pushed by a man that actually knows how to combine performance with functionality. A device is no good if the only people that know how to use it are its creators. As for secure e-mail, I'm pretty sure that's OFN and has long been fixed, not that I care anyway, people are so narcissistic to think people actually give a shit about the little crap e-mails they get. None of my critical security stuff like bank or credit card info is ever sent over e-mail anyway, at most it's a notification letter that says "go to the website and pay your bill."

I think it's time you got a Mac. The iPhone is nice, but it doesn't hold a candle to how great Mac OS X is next to Windows anything. Windows always has and always will be wannabe Mac garbage. I know lots of people that've switched to Mac after owning an iPhone and they will never go back. Also, if you must, there's always Bootcamp/Parallels/VMWare Fusion to let you dual boot Windows if you should ever need to.

Why do people keep insisting on Windows? I have never used a single Windows device and said "wow, this works just like I would like it to and very reliably at that" EVER. Owning an iPhone after 3 generations & still not being able to securely sync it up to a corporate exchange server for work is a flaw, and removes any hope of it completely killing Blackberry/Symbian/Windows Mobile in IT cores everywhere. The OS is stupid, and Apple is slow to respond.

I've worked professionally on supporting multiple platforms, I'm not biased to any of them, but I do see Mac OSX for what it is ... A simple, locked down, proprietary GUI thrown on top of a BSD kernel; tied to standard hardware at a significant markup.

For the prices Apple force on their x86 hardware, I would sooner purchase Sparc hardware from Sun and live in Solaris.

OSX is good at what it does, security through obscurity with 1% of difference to GUI standards put forward by Windows, or a KDE/Gnome platform. Which is nothing I would be interested in.

iPhone is a sleek device, but it's got a shit-ton of legitimate problems that make it inferior to a number of devices.

Windows mobile because I can sync what I like over bluetooth (a killer feature in itself) - Sync my calendars to multiple computers. I'm not tied down to Windows media player to '''sync''' up my music collection. I can put whatever files I like in what ever folder on the phone I choose, and I can wirelessly transmit them to anyone anywhere all without having to pay AN ADDITIONAL £58 a year.

I can load up any application I download on the net (emulators included) - all without having to hack/trick/crack/smack my phone's OS.

Editing word, ppt and excel docs in an native office environment is also a plus.

Also... you gotta love having a battery that lasts longer than you on a busy day

This man speaks wisdom. That's basically why I'll be Windows for a long time coming still. That and the fact that the majority of people use Windows so there is a greater network of people working on mods, hacks, fixes, whatever for the far greater number of software programs available under Windows. I also don't like being locked down to a very rigid OS, like X. I prefer to customize and look inside the guts. It ain't as pretty, but I like knowing that it's a lot easier to modify should I need to do so.

Well that's fine if you need something somewhat custom/unusual to do unorthodox computing, but I have never used a computer that handled day to day web browsing, e-mail, and other basic stuff better than a Mac. It seems every time I use a PC I just say "for fucks sake, can I just get a Mac over here?" It's just something that adding up hardware numbers will never answer. It doesn't matter what it's based on, it's how it works that makes it special. It's the same thing as trying to explain why a Ferrari is better than a Corvette, even if they have the same horsepower and skidpad numbers, there's alot more to it than that.
