While not cheaper, this does seem like the better solution than buying a Gen Mobile. Size would still be an advantage of the GM tho.
so how come that screen works while no others seem to?
That is great, I'd almost rather spend the money on a PSP but if I already had a Nomad I'd definitely look into trying this. :) Hope somebody here gives it a try with awesome results.
Hell yeah! I'd take a Nomad with that kind of screen over any of the AtGames junk(yes, I am talking about the RetroGEN and GENMobile, both made by AtGames but sold by RetroBit(RetroGEN) and Hyperkin(GENMobile) any day.
You need three things to work in the Nomad:
It needs to accept NTSC timings (unless you modded your Nomad to PAL :D ).
It needs to be the correct size.
It needs to be the correct thickness.
LCDs often use whatever timing they feel like because they're completely different from CRTs. A few of the models are remarked as being too thick, so you couldn't put the Nomad back together.
AtGames is stubborn, so I highly doubt they'll do anything good with Genesis clones. But if Yobo makes a Nomad clone, you can expect that to have only compatibility issues with Virtua Racing, Master System converters and the 32X. Yobo has their own custom super-accurate GOAC used in the FC3 Plus that can be reused in a Nomad clone. That would be awesome. But they are best to keep the same sound circuit in the FC3 Plus! That circuit provides super-clear and very loud sound in full Stereo. I'd definitely give Yobo my money for a product like that!
Now THAT is one of the coolest mods I've ever seen. Makes the Retrogen and Genmobile look even junkier than they did before. I'm half tempted to spend a bunch of money I don't have and buy a used Nomad and pay that guy to mod it for me. Of course, then I'd need a NeoFlash flashcart, if they have all the bugs worked out, that is. I really don't relish the thought of carrying around a bunch of cartridges.
wow nice mod , i wish i could stay home all day long and tinker with sega mods
The compatibility problems are less signficant for a handheld anyway, SMS converter is too bulky (except rare/expensive model 2), 32x is impratical to say the least, and while VR would be nice to have, I think it might put a significant increase in battery strain. (with the added processor onboard, depending ont he kind of power sourse such a protable was packing)
No need to preach to the choir! :) As I've said repeatedly on this forum, I've already got a modded PSP slim (with a functional UMD no less!) loaded with the excellent Picodrive and all the other classic console emulators, plus thousands of games, and I'm a strong proponent of that route vs. these junky overpriced retro handhelds with shitty built-in emulation and sound. Why anyone would shell out $50-$60 for one of those remains an absolute mystery to me. But, a genuine Sega Nomad with a quality screen and long-lasting battery pack is a horse of a different color; a lovely collector's item for a Sega fanatic, no? Being able to play Genesis on the go in PERFECT quality, for once, as it's the actual hardware. Anyway, I said I was only tempted, 'cause I don't have the $$ to blow. But if I did, I'd go for it. I wouldn't be concerned about cost efficiency or pocket sizability (I got the PSP for that), I'd want it because it would just be a damn cool gadget for this Sega fan to have. And plus, as much as I love it, even Picodrive can't quite handle that pesky Sonic The Hedgehog.
It would be awesome to fix the Nomad and turn it into the awesome handheld it *SHOULD* have been, but the price to do it is steep.
