Dreamcast direct-dial gaming??

A friend of mine that live pretty close to each other (no long distance charges if I dial him up) and we both have DC's and phone lines.

Are there any direct dial games for people to play against each other? Does there absolutely have to be a server involved??

It would be great to drive against him or even drive *with* him or some kind of Doom-esque shooting.

Been prowling the dcemu forums, but can't find anythign that doesn't require a server. This kind of thing has been done a lot and can't really see why it cannot be done again (or ever).

If I need to is there a way to set up my OWN server? I have plenty of computer hardware available, setting up a server is not a problem, getting the DC to use it likely is.

A friend of mine asked, what about dial up calls incoming? How would I route them? There has to be a way without having a hundred (or maybe 10) phone numbers, lines and modems.

Having a DC to play on across the neighborhood would be a great thing to have.

Any ideas? Have I missed anything??

Wish I could help you but I bought my DC back in 2002 and never went online with it.

If you guys live close together, just have a dreamcast LAN party. I couldn't imagine that being hard, unless space constraints are a problem for you.

Take this into account aswell. Dial-Up may work for X-Band/Sega Channel, but I am uncertain as to if Dreamcast will work on a Dial-Up phone line.

Modem built in, yes, and it's software controlled, so the software has to be able to answer it. In a nutshell, the two DC's have to have a client-server setup, one being the host and the other being the visitor (client). No actual server need be involved, though.

Since I started looking, I was amazed that this hadn't been done already since the DC software has been known for quite some time. I know faster ethernet woudl be more attractive, but it's pretty expensive considering we can do most of it all on our computers now.

But I would really love to play against my buddy (pacman100000 on atariage, fyi) locally and skip servers altogether.

The Net-Link is the only system that will still work.

Yeah, was just about to state this myself.

The Dreamcast cannot dial out, but the Saturn Net-Link can do direct dialing to a friend and you can both play online for the price of a phone call.

Sega Rally, Virtual On, and Saturn Bomberman are always fun, I would imagine them to be even more fun online.

No, I didn't know that. I'm haven't been fortunate enough to own a dreamcast.

Hold on, the DC *can* dial out, but it was always to a provider(mine would be AT&T) then on to a server for whatever game it's on. I could do this now with the browser 2.0 I have, but then Sega's servers are down.

What I am thinking needs to happen is have a dialer and software on a disk that established the link on one end and answers the call on the other, then be able to swap the disk with the small link program still in RAM and play whatever-- I'm thinking Quake II (iirc) but not on a server.

I do *not* know what Quake used so it might require a server. I would like to play something via direct link to my friend's house, though. Driving would be nice, like some racing game, or a shooter like I said up above.

@Sega Fan, you NEED a Dreamcast, I'll see if I can snag you one cheap. With them available new for only $100, that has killed the market. Heck, I think I can get one for $10 as a bare console. Lemme check.

Or, you can do something crazy like sit together in the same room and do the two-player thing live and in person....

;)Split screen gaming does nothing for the networker in me. If you follow my posts at all you can see I like to do things liek this with anything I can get my hands on.

Once I used an Atari 520ST to talk to a Xenix box just to say I could and did.

You could always link cable a couple Playstations with two TVs and play some Doom two player with two screens. There are actually a fair number of games that can make use of the link cable: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Link_Cable

If you have a couple of old fat PS2s, you can play Gran Turismo 3 with an i.link cable and two TVs. There are probably other i-link capable PS2 games but I've not been able to find a list.

I'm not quite sure about dial-up, but I have heard of fan based servers that support the Broadband adapter.
