For some reason, that name is just hilarious.

So you're telling me that no one bought a Genesis because the graphics were better than the NES? Graphics aren't everything, but they are certainly something, and good graphics can take a 6/10 to a 9/10. You seem to think that if a game has good graphics, it's gameplay has to suffer. While that seems to be par for the course nowadays, it doesn't HAVE to be that way. Confining themselves to NES technology without even programming it as an NES game or really fully limiting themselves to NES capabilities (supposedly there are more sprites on screen than the NES could handle, with or without flicker) just ends in a "what's the point"? Mega Man is arguably one of the most over-sequeled games ever made, I really never play any besides 2, 3, and X TBH. Somehow because MM9 recycles sprites from 1988 it doesn't get labeled as the phoned-in lame game that it is.
it is when they don't substantially improve anything about the game. MM9 is indistinguishable from the later phoned-in 4-6 games, and nowadays it's even lamer because the technology hurdle wasn't there. Just because they decided to use 8-bit sprites doesn't mean it can't be phoned in overall.
LOL, that's awsome, I love that tongue-in-cheek humor of the cover art, like they did for MM9. Not anywhere near as bad as the art for the first 2 games (a separate, odd immage was used for the UK MM2 release as well) and definitely higher quality, but with a significant jab at the crappy north american MM box art. :D
???
Where did he say he had any problem witht he original games? He just said, that using old graphics didn't really enhance th egame overall ecept some (arguably bogus) nestolgia, or more prominently, retro fanboy bs...
Personally, I respect what he's mentioned, and the parallel to programming on real hardware with homebrew stuff is also significant, but I think doing one retroesque game was pretty neat, but a second is kind of pushing it. (again, I love the route LA took with their SoMI remake)
In fact, I wouldn't mind a remake of the original 6 MM games with updated graphics and sound, Wily Wars kind of did that for the first 3, but was fairly sloppy.
They don't have to go 3D, in fact, I'd rather they didn't, but MM8+ visuals would be great.
Again though, I like the series, but am not particularly good (and to get decent it takes a good bit of practice which I lose rather quickly if I haven't played the game in a while). I do enjoy the games, and the improved graphics and sound of MM8 did nothing but enhance the gameplay. (the controls also feel a good bit more fluid than the NES games, a big reason I found those more difficult than MMX) Power battles was also awsome, but that's an arcade game and only focuses on the boss fighting, not the platforming. (graphics and sound were great though and good, fun, arcade style gameplay, glad it was included in the collection)
Maybe 17days' flash game example isn't perfect, maybe rom hacks are a better comparison... except those would actually fit his latter point of contention as rom hacks are done with games on real hardware (unless they're sloppy and only work on emulators).
But take a high quality homebrew remix/hack like Sonic Megamix, that recycles a lot of the old material, but also makes some modifications, runs on original hardware, has some neat updates (sprites, gameplay, audio), and is pretty great in general. (and pretty impressive, especially if those digitized sound samples are done on the YM2612 DAC and not the CD's Ricoh sound chip)
But perhaps some people just want a grudgingly difficult game with NES-like graphics and sound... I don't know... I know I wasn't, but again I'm not a huge MM fan, but my younger brother is and he also got fed up with it as I mentioned before. (he's played through 1-6, 8, and most of the MMX titles and MM&Bass for GBA, I think he got bored with MM 7 though)

Now here's MM11 and it features brand new Atari 2600 graphics!

Big picture, man. Look at the big picture. I wouldn't go so far as to say that 4-6 were completely phoned-in (I honestly thought 6 was a lot of fun, in fact), but the steady rhythm with which they were released got pretty old. Each year another Mega Man game would get shipped out with only minor gameplay upgrades and worse story/bosses/music than the one before it.
MM9 got a free ride from the press because it dared to be different. After an extended hiatus, it reset the series back to the MM2 era, removing some of the abilities that many fans had grown to consider "game-breaking." It took out all the bells and whistles (snowboarding, for example), and put the focus back on rock-solid gameplay.
It's interesting that if Capcom had made the exact same game with better graphics, many people would consider it a better game. Personally, I never liked the original series once they started adding more animation and detail to the characters, which made them larger and harder to control.
It's clear that Capcom is designing these games specifically for the fans of the first few games. That makes them pretty niche, since Mega Man has only been profitable lately via the Battle Network series. Are they cheap to make because of their 8-bit design? Probably, but I don't think Capcom really expects to rake in a fortune here.
Again, Capcom has already released two Mega Man remakes with the kind of production values that you're demanding, and guess what? No one cared. I don't see how they are "lazy" with Mega Man 9 & 10 just a few short years after offering up Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X. If the flashy production values don't reach the intended audience, try something else.
And that's what they're doing.
Personally i would have loved it more had it been an actual Nes game,
and that it would not only have been a downloadable game but also available as a cart from the Capcom site.
But that would have exposed their DLC scheme, since they'd have to choose
whether or not to add the extra stuff like Protoman in the cart version.
I guess i just long for a real return to the classic consoles instead of games that only appear classic.
I was actually responding to him where he says this "Confining themselves to NES technology without even programming it as an NES game or really fully limiting themselves to NES capabilities (supposedly there are more sprites on screen than the NES could handle, with or without flicker) just ends in a "what's the point"? Mega Man is arguably one of the most over-sequeled games ever made, I really never play any besides 2, 3, and X TBH. Somehow because MM9 recycles sprites from 1988 it doesn't get labeled as the phoned-in lame game that it is."
My comment about him being touched by Mega Man was a joke. After reading what he was saying it just sounded like he was whining or grasping at straws to prove a point. I actually realized finally at that point he just didn't really care too much for the classic MM games. I did and still do so we're obviously coming from different perspectives on this one.
And to your comment...
My liking of MM9 has absolutly nothing to do with nostolgia or being a retro fan boy. I actually just prefer MM in his NES version and I think most people were happy to see Mega Man return to his former state. I don't give a shit about the technical side behind MM9. If I like a game I'll play it if I don't I wont. I have little time to analyze what it took technically to put a game together. I played it and it reminded me of Mega Man 2. Everyone points to that as the high water mark for NES Mega Man games so seeing that Capcom caught on to that fact is enough for me to see they weren't being lazy in this release.
I'm disappointed by the music in the trailer. It doesn't really sound much like the old Mega Man games to me in terms of composition/arrangement. MM9 mostly nailed it, with a few deviations from the formula.

another bleu bomber can t wait to play number 10
but im still waiting for a seqeul in wich dr willy finally dies
He clearly does at some point. Fans are still waiting for the bridge to the X series.
ahem: Rayman, Astal, Gex, Tempo...I could go on...
OK, they may not all be 9/10s, but if the graphics were shit, they would be largely ignored, especially at the time they were released.
It seems everyone's argument here is simply that they like how the NES games play, and that's fine, I prefer the sharp controls and general level design as well, but that doesn't mean they can't spice it up. New Super Mario Bros Wii took everything that made SMB1, 3, and World and combined and added to them to make a great new experience that did things the old games couldn't do. MM9 is like a pirate remake of a game from 93. Mega Man 2 is my #1 favorite game of all time, so I don't think my dismay has anything to do with a dislike of the series but rather the creative stagnation. It seems all Capcom can do is improve graphics while turning the gameplay to shit or use NES graphics and just be about mediocre. Good gameplay and good graphics don't have to be mutually exclusive. Intentionally pixelated graphics can be OK in some instances, but I like it to have a new twist to make it seem like it's 2009 and not 1989
NONE of those games are 9/10, so I'm not really sure you're making your point.
