Console wars today

I don't own any modern consoles and I really don't keep up too much with the current state of gaming, but I was wondering if people today still fight over which console is better like they used to (and still do to a certain degree) back in the 16/32 bit days.

I was just wondering because it seems that the PS3 and X-Box 360 seem to be pretty close to one another in terms of what they can do on screen -- and from what little I've read -- games seem to be nearly identical on each system.

So, are things just as heated today between the rival camps or is it simply a matter of whether a white box or a black box better matches your decor?

Most of the time, the differences are negligible. The only thing that still really matters is the framerate difference (and still, this is usually moreso a question of proper optimization rather than the limits of the hardware). Seems to me it's mostly the younger folks who actually get hung up over comparing today's multiplatform titles.

There are so few exclusives between the 360 and PS3, it's really hard to argue which console is better. It definitely isn't the SNES v. Genesis war back in the day, not even close. Rather disappointing actually.

The Wii really isn't comparable with the 360 and PS3. It even markets to a completely different kind of gamer.

I see just as many arguments as ever.

with 360 vs. PS3, it basically comes down to how good you are at economics:

you can get the 360, have it break 4 times, pay out the ass for accessories because they all require Microsoft's blessing in order to work, pay out the ass for online play, etc. etc.

OR

you can get a PS3, pay a little more upfront, and get user swappable hard disks, use any USB controller for many games, get a blu-ray player, utilize some features with the PSP, play online for free, play PS1 games, oh, and the damn thing works for more than 6 months without an epic hardware failure.


I did console repair for 9 months, I will NEVER buy an XBOX 360 unless they do substantial revisions to the hardware or I can get it for about $30 with everything I need (controller, hard drive, etc.). If you don't have one or the other at this point, you must have brain damage to buy a 360 when the PS3 now costs about the same. The one exception might be if your friends already made the terrible mistake of getting a 360 and you want to be able to play online with them. If there is one thing I absolutely cannot tolerate, it's shoddy hardware that won't even last if it's taken care of.

This generation is pretty lean on good software, and arguably horrible on all sides; except for the portables since both major platforms kick each others ass in different ways.

I used to work in a video game store back in the day, and it was always fun to watch some of the kids argue over whether the SNES or Genesis was the better system. Game engines and software libraries are pretty ubiquitous these days, which says a lot in favor of that observation.

It's always been the case to compare ports within a generation, but it's almost as if there's a minimal difference & half of the old arguments are usually not applicable.

the newer jasper xbox's are much more reliable , and you could mod a xbox u cant mod a ps3

That argument stems from hardware propaganda. The newer 360 motherboards are just as poorly designed as the original ones. Smaller low power chipsets and a bandaid heatsink doesn't eliminate the RROD and even now there are different errors popping up.

Blogs & know-nothing fanboys latched on to 'code names', and like a herd of script kiddies they ran with it; as it was some piece of profound wisdom to share amongst their peers.

Microsoft played their hand as best they could in that regard. :lol:

Screw the PS3! Natal is going to lay that piece of junk to waste when it comes out!

Unless you get lucky and have a launch system that's hardly taken care of and still mangage to be working fine currently somehow...

I've got a freind with a launch 360 (or close to it) an it's fiarly scuffed up and never RROD 9other than overheating and the 2-bar RR). He's surprised too, a big family, crouded house, mediocre ventalation, not especially clean, used upright constantly, etc.

PS3 is region-free, so there's no need to mod.

I was pretty sure PS3's wound up not being region free as promised.

This generation is horrible, none of the systems are really worth buying, because none have really good exclusive unfortunately. At first I thought the Wii was going to be a really good system, but it ended up really lacking in good exclusive.

Go with a Saturn, Burning Rangers, NiGHTS into Dreams, Guardian Heroes, Sega Rally, Daytona USA, and Virtua Fighter 2 for the price of a Wii.

Trust me, you'll get much more fun with it. I know I am, lol.
