I agree with InternalPrimate. "Core gaming" is a myth.
what Nintendo's doing is as commendable as selling crack to 5 year olds as far as I'm concerned. They didn't have to make steaming piles of crap to expand to other audiences.
More than anything, I'm pissed because I have a Wii so I'm stuck with nothing but shitty games. I feel like Nintendo took my money and gave me some gold that turned my skin green. Had I got a PS3 from the start, I'd probably just be like "eh, not for me."
WOW.
And Nintendo isn't making steaming piles of crap, that's the third parties looking to make a quick buck. In fact, Nintendo has made some fantastic games this generation. Again, Super Mario Galaxy IS the best game this generation. You can put an IP stamp on that! :D
Outside of your own ridiculous experiences with Nintendo hardware, there's millions of people like myself who see it as affordable, solid, and full of convenience.
Nintendo is more or less comparable to a toy company; that you would find any business 'commendable' is the real root of the problem here. You bleed absurd expectations and delusions of self entitlement; chastising anybody who would not be cynical, or support your particular flavor of fan-service.
Well, there we have it, I guess. Today the focus isn't on system vs system, as much as it is the "hardcore" gamers' resentment towards "teh casualz".
The only problem with the Wii, is the sheer amount of shovelware on it. Its the Amiga effect. So much crap comes out, there's bound to be at least 1 good game.
believe it or not, KD, some businesses exist that actually set out to do things right with profits not being the #1 goal. Some people would rather make something worthwhile, even if it means hurting profits. Usually, if you make products that focus more on quality than shaving pennies from the bottom line, you eventually come out ahead. Even though it's not my cup of tea, I would argue that Square is one such company, as they refrained from re-releasing FFVII or remaking it for PS3, something that would've sold by the truckload, even if it was phoned in. Then again, with all of you blindly praising the Wii, Nintendo is thinking they're doing an ace job. You speak with your dollar, there's no other way for them to really know how people feel, you keep buying shit, they'll keep selling it to you.
They are making products people want to buy. If the products were undesirable, people wouldn't be buying them, but they clearly are. It all sounds rather logical to me.
that's not being a drama queen, when I say drama queen, I mean interpersonally between members. I was just using a simile to how I feel about Nintendo's route to profit.
And for the record, they aren't the only guilty party. Namco may be the worst in this regard, EVERYTHING they make is another rehash of an older game and full of bugs and sells for more than similar games that are actually worth playing. Taito is often guilty of this as well, though a gem comes out every once in a while (Space Invaders Infinity Gene, for example). In fact, as far as the iPhone lineup goes, I find the big names like Namco, Sega, Capcom, Konami, etc. make the most overpriced and bug-ridden phoned-in garbage. Gameloft, a lowly french developer, is smoking their asses in terms of quality and the sales are starting to reflect that. Gameloft just did an awesome port of Driver with improved graphics even over the PC version and I'm LOVING it.
No, they are making products that convince people they want to buy them, only to later realize they made a horrible mistake. Hopefully this will bite them in the ass later. No one knew XBOX 360 was going to RROD every 3rd week when it first came out, and once they had one, it was too late.
Your argument is stupid, and the example is ridiculous.
Square Enix are notorious for milking their games through remakes & ports. Final Fantasy 7 is on the PS3, unenhanced; for $9.99.
The only reason it's profitable is because it is a quality title, much like how the Wii is profitable because it is a machine that offers quality & a desired games experience in today's market.
This isn't an argument against the 'lack' of high quality software that would appease traditional gamers you're throwing out though, it's a lecture on 'consumerism fundamentals' that makes no sense by example, and doesn't address 'anything' argued previously.
You present yourself as if you feel alienated by modern gaming, and feel the need to piss on everybody who plays them.
And both of their resentment towards the pros. Or, t3h pro'z, as it were.
Seriously, casuals are like "I don't care because I don't play the game twenty hours a day" when pro players are just naturally good, and don't play the game 20 hours a day (in most cases)
Hardcore gamers get all offended. "Don't play the game that way, you're taking all the fun out of it. So and so who made it didn't intend for it to be played this way, you shouldn't do it and you're stupid and I hate you."
Why didn't Capcom take combos out of Street Fighter? Why didn't Midway take air combos out of MK2 and arguably MK1???
Because they were impressed with the way people found ways to play their game competitively. Not offended (cough Intendo, cough snaking[SMK] and wavedashing[SSBM] cough) in the least.
Ah.
Sega in the 90's
I get it!
To me, Nintendo is putting out a worthless piece of hardware in the Wii, which has plowed ahead thanks to a very good, and very well marketed gimmick.
When the Wii came out, it cost what? $90 to build?
Rumors were circling the web that Nintendo planned to sell it for $100 (rumors started by IGN articles in fact)
It came out as a weaker Xbox for $250
I was pretty bummed by the graphics, not that they're what matter, but I hate the motion controls too.
I hated Metroid Prime 3, and I loved the first two like crazy.
I think the Wii just isn't for me. I really hate 90% of the "good games" people talk about.
Brawl and Wii Mario Kart both took out the competitive edge on purpose, to appeal to casual gamers.
I'm all for marketing to the casual gamers, expanding your audience, etc. etc. but...when it came down to giving the loyal customers the finger in these two games, I did honestly feel bad.
I also don't care for 3D Zelda games, not being able to shoot your sword when you have full health is a deal breaker. I also feel the game should be a Devil May Cry clone at this point to pull more people in, since no one I know likes Zelda games anymore.
I hated Super Mario Galaxy. I know I'm alone in this.
I'm also ashamed that Luigi will never be true Luigi again. His final performance as real Luigi was in Super Smash Bros. Melee, where he looks exactly as he does in real life, sounds exactly as he does in real life, they left him completely uncensored and great with the exception of censoring his cape (turned it into a head butt) and his running break dance kick (turned it into a flailing and useless attack, but thankfully Nintendo granted us wavedashing, so we are again able to break dance dash attack)
I loved the Xbox, and it's many innovations (pretty much all hard drive related) but I hate the 360 since it breaks.
Every single one of my friends who have had a 360 has had theirs break. Not all to red rings of death either. It's most certainly the PS2 of this generation. (I hated PS2 and avoided it because it broke all the time, and because it was just a pretty bad piece of hardware in general...my PS3 has PS2 compatibility though, lucky me)
I'm not fond of the PS3, but Sony's in last so they're actually trying to compete this generation, and you can feel it.
That said, I'm pretty pissed at them right now, because they ruined the default XMB's Night Time Theme (and you can't bring the old one back)
I don't personally own a Wii, a few friends do and when I go over it does provide a few hours amusement, he has the sports games and my favourite (of what he has) is the Zelda shooting one.
I own a launch XBOX360 but never play it as I am scared it will RROD on me (I can fix it though as I have for other people, but they generally arse up again). I have games I haven't even played!
I also have a PS3 slim that I got cheap from a mate (he got it mail away with his TV but already had a PS3) which I mostly use as a DVD/Blue ray player. I have 2 games for the PS3 Guitar Hero 5 (which I got mail away with my surround sound stereo) and Resistance which I got for cheap.
I disagree, SM64 and Sunshine especially are much more fun than Galaxy, I am a 3D platformer fan, I generally liked SA1/2 more in terms of gameplay than any of the 2D sonic titles (and I linke those generally more than the 2D mario games, except Yoshi's island -even then I'm on the fence with S3&K). Galaxy just doesn't feel right to me. (maybe galaxy II will)
So far, the Wii's labrary has been far less satisfying than the GameCube's (or N64's), we end up playing about as many GC titles on it as Wii, if not more. (and play the N64 and SNES more than either -propably would genesis as well, but it's not set up at th eentertainment system currently)
Plus some Wiiware is good, but some of th ebest are on PC as well, like SBCG4AP and Tales of Monky Island -the latter plays better on PC as well I think.
We've got a decent library for the wii, and in general, games are a good deal cheaper than on 360/PS3, but more expensive than PC contrmporaries, let alone PS2. (ghostbusters was $50-60 on 360/PS3 at release, $30-35 for wii, about $25 for PC, and sometimes less than $20 on PS2) Granted the PC/PS3/360 games were different in general compared to Wii/PS2, but I preferred the cool co-op puzzel/adventure aspects of the Wii/PS2 version. (Anf the wii remote is used pretty well)
That's another point though, many 3rd party games that are on wii, sometimes come out on PS2 as well but not others. (that version of Ghostbusters for example, or the New Silent Hill game)
