I've gone for Gunstar, mainly because I enjoy playing it more than any of the others. Some of the Contras seemed to rely too much on memorization for my tastes too (hello Shattered Soldier).

Metal Slug.
Metal Slug, not only does it play very good but it is also visually stunning.
Metal Slug for me, with Contra on 2nd place.
Well, if we go off the latest installments on the DS, Contra 4 was way better than Metal Slug 7.
Contra, definitely. Unlike Gunstar Heroes, I didn't beat Contra until 9 years after I first played it (I still have to beat Super C. I beat Contra 3 with my brother a while back). I beat Gunstar Heroes in one sitting a day after I got it.
I voted Contra, assuming Hard Corps.
Gunstar Heroes is better otherwise.
Konami were smart enough to let someone else take a shot at Contra, and they hit the ground running.
Maybe SNK should consider that with Metal Slug.
Going to have to go w/ Contra since I really enjoyed the 8 & 16 Bit contra Games a lot w/ Gunstar Heroes coming in a close 2nd as its the Absolute best Run & Gun on the Genesis, I've never really been able to get into the Metal Slug games though.
I'm casting my vote for Contra since I'm most familiar with that series and there have been some awesome games along the way. I really didn't get into Metal Slug until I got the import for the Saturn and that's the only version I've played.
Gun Force 2.
