The coolest Genesis cart box!

Today i was cleaning the shelves where I keep my games when I realized something funny and cool at the same time, I began to wonder why they not did this for all their games? I mean ... the box is so small it is almost the same size as the cartridge itself but is also a great idea, at this moment many of us could be saving a lot of space on our shelves if Sega had followed this route for their packaging.

I Think Sunsoft wanted to make clear that his game was cute, short and small:o

Sunsoft did this with several of their JP releases, Batman and Shi Kin Joh (spell?) for example. However, they did not do it with their majestic Panorama Cotton.

Cool, i didnt know that, SFZ is the only Jap Sunsoft game that i own.

That's kind of cool but it clashes with an entire collection when there's only a handful of small ones, doesn't quite display right.

Yes, Zebbe is right. As far as I know, apart from Super Fantasy Zone and Zebbe's two examples, there are other two games that have that kind of box: Tel Tel Mahjong and Tel Tel Stadium

You are right, but as Zebbe already said, all japanese Sunsoft releases have that type of packaging, one can have a whole shelf dedicated to those games.

I really wish they'd have went with just one size, either Sunsoft's or Sega's. - I mean really: Why couldn't they stick to just one layout and one size ?!

Okay, things aren't as bad as in the US with EA's and Accolade's games released in practically any physically possible shape and form plus Sega itself topping it off by switching from black to red and then from plastic to cardboard. They at least tried to keep things consistent in Japan - except for Sunsoft that is. :?

The original box was shaped to fit next to VHS tapes iirc. Overall I think all the consistency of the boxes is pretty good, although very space wasting. I would have liked to see boxes that open like the ones for cassettes. Very tiny...

I am not sure on this one but I have a feeling that Sega of America (or Europe?) came up with the boxes (during the Master System days). The Japanese Mark III games were still sold in cardboard boxes at that time.

If that is the case, then this would be among the very best things that SOA ever contributed. Europe and Japan went with these boxes from beginning to the very end. - Aside of Sonic & Knuckles there never was a single cardboard box, and I think Japan even put that one into a plastic clamshell box.

Wasn't the red edge thing just for the Genesis, EU/UK MD switched to blue instead, didn't they? (I think they should have just removed the grid and stuck with the old layout, especially the Genesis/MD insignia, perhaps switched from black to a dark smokey gray with the grid now gone)

The design is similar to video rental boxes, and indeed there were specific cases for rental stores for other companies (I have a Nintendo pinball NES game with a clamshell case nearly identical to Sega's). I'm sure rental places apreciated the useful boxes as standard. ;)

More importantly, smaller cases would mean smaller manuals, so not good in that respect. Having neat plastic cases really does give people less of an excuse to lose the manuals (and more likely to keep game+manual in good condition), except for dumbasses who toss the boxes as they would with paper ones...

love that "mini-box", they should have been the norm.

I don't think the smaller manuals would have been worth it, they're good sized as they are, not as tall as SCD or big box saturn/PSX (or 3DO) games, but similar to SNES, N64, and newere DVD boxed games. Preferable to the smaller NES manuals generally and the small CD jewel cased manuals as well.
