Is the Gen1 with an RGB on the side rare?
Also can i plug in a VGA cable to it? It looks to be the same exact connection as my VGA out to RGB in on the tv.

Damn I've never seen a Model 1 with a 15-pin female VGA/RGB connection on the side. The early first few revisions have a 9-pin port on the back that was used as a controller port for multiplayer connections. If there is one with RGB on the side it must be super rare!
Holy crap, I'd better nab it then. So your saying my VGA cable will work?
LOL no I didn't say that at all. I said I've never seen one before and if there is one it must be super rare. That's all I said.
Might be a dev unit.
It won't work with VGA as VGA starts at 31khz and the Genesis outputs 15khz like in the arcades.
I'd still buy it and try to resell it over here or at ebay.
So should i get it ? To be honest its in really rough shape, i did not buy it since i didnt have the cables to test it. I live down the street from the owner and will go there tommorow i need an NES RF cable, the owner rigs the power off his SNES adapter with a wire to power the system, if it boots up Beggar Prince I'm buying it! Then all i need is a certain cable right? Is that easily obtainable?
If it works I will certainly buy it, the best part is I probably will only end up paying 5$ for it!
If you can take pictures of it and upload em here. :)
No matter what buy it... even if it doesn't work you have a super-rare model that you could either sell to buy a working genesis (blasphemy!) or keep it and restore it to working order and have the best genny money can buy!
Are you sure this isn't some custom mod?
I thought the EXT. port was only used with the Mega Model (officially), the Zereo Toleance system (using port 2) is the only (local) link play I know of.
If a dev unit, that might not even be a video connector, but something else entirely.
However, early VGA monitors were designed to support 15 kHz HSYNC for EGA/CGA compatibility (late 80s monitors, maybe some early 90s ones as well). I suppose it could have been used for that purpose. (EGA/CGA compatible VGA monitors)
Doesn't the Genesis output RGB through the AV port?
well i got the NES cable i'm going tommorow to go test the system. It is def. not a custom mod i have known the kid for 10+ years and remember he had the damn thing since I gave away my copy of sewer shark to him (he still has it surprisingly!)
The RGB is labeled clearly above the connection in the standard font found above all of the systems ports. I really hope it works there is a peice of the plastic broken off exposing the motherboard lol! I just may buy it either way, if its broken and I show him that in his face he may just give it to me.
If i end up with the system tommorow pics are going up!
salamando:
Good info. Although I suspect it is not all that rare, I look forward to seeing pictures of the console. Cheers!
Definitely get it! If the case is beat up recase it, cut a new port for it (if that's at all workable) and you'll have yourself a super rare dvelopers' Genesis (if I guess right with y'all and it is a dev. unit).
