2nd German MD Championships (Feb 27) - NOW ENDORSED BY SEGA!

I bring great news from the world of Mega Drive Competitions!

I am proud to announce that our second German Mega Drive tournament will this time around officially be endorsed by Sega of Germany! It will take place on Saturday, February 27th, at 13:00 in the "Konsolerie" in Nuremberg.

With this support, we are now able to actually announce prices to be won for Germany's top three Mega Drive Gamers!

This time around, the tournament will be held in a series of knockout rounds in six games/categories:

Platformers: Sonic 2
Racing: Micro Machines 2
Sports: NBA Jam T.E.
Puzzle: Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Action: Mega Bomberman
Beat'Em'Up: Super Street Fighter II*

*(Eternal Champions would've been another choice but we went with the SF-franchise because of the wider appeal)


Participating and advancing in each event will grant the player points adding up to his overall score. One doesn't need to compete in every game in the challenge - but it improves the chances for becoming Germany's Allround Mega Drive Champion!
Also, we'll also have something for the winner in each single event, so it also pays to compete even if you only want to start in a single category.

Thats awesome! personally I would pick SF2:SCE over SSF2 since it plays considerably better imho.

SSF2 is a good choice, but yeah, they're both great!

I'd go if I had more money, I already spent it on Hotel reservations for vacation in July and Oktoberfest which which I try to go to every year. this tournament though should be interesting w/ at least 13 drunks playing Genesis games.

Our tournament will commence this Saturday (February 27th). So far 14 challengers have announced their participation.

Should anyone else still be interested in participation, registration is still possible until Friday.

Brilliant stuff Phantar, I cannot wait to learn the results of the up and coming German Mega Drive Championship. The Sega endorsement is fantastic and a true credit to what you guys have built up in such a short space of time. Good luck with everything and I will see you in October when the titans from England, Germany and Portugal will battle for the supremacy of Europe once more :ok:

The best three players will receive one copy of "Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing" each!

What are you guys up to, btw... any news from the portuguese Mega Drive Circuit? ;)

We had a tourney also on the 27th. While you guys were playing in Germany we were playing in Portugal, how cool is that? =p

Anyway, i beat Ferdinand in the finals, so portuguese team to travel to Germany for the Euro is now Alberto(team captain) and me. In 2 or 3 months we'll have another tourney to find the 3rd man for the team, and then, everything will be ready for another great portuguese victory on foreign soil! :haha: (in Octoker maybe?)


back on topic, what about Tobias and Valerian? did they miss the tourney?

both Valerian and Tobis were unfortunately unavailable for the tournament; Tobias had to cancel his participation only about a week prior, which was very unfortunate, especially with him being the champion of the first tournament and all...

looking forward to the next german turnament, the next european championchip and a decent fight against you people.

I´d like to take part as a player or visitor, but Nürnberg is just too far away. I think it is a pretty bad geographical choice anyway, since many many collectors and fans are from NRW or other parts of western Germany. Hannover would be an ideal spot since it´s pretty much in the middle of our beloved Germany empire :)

Woo-hoo! The German video game magazine M!Games (formerly known as Maniac, and thus being the eldest German videogaming-magazine still in existence) did a short bit about our tournament. It's a very short summary of the event and an interview with our winner, Richard.

It's in German, but here's a rough translation:

2nd German Mega Drive Championships - Digital Héxathlon

"Nuremberg * With Sega's blessing, the end of February saw the German Mega Drive Championships taking place for the second time. Within the halls of the video game store Konsolerie 18 participants competed for the "Golden Joypad". In knockout-mode the opponents squared off in six 16-bit classics: "Super Street Fighter II", "Mega Bomberman", "Sonic" [sic... in fact, it was Sonic 2], "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine", "NBA Jam TE" and "Micro Machines 2". Points were awarded for participation and every vicotry in each event - the overall winner was Richard Neumann. The results can be found at http://megadriveturnier.blogspot.com. A new edition is planned to take place in late summer, with the European Championships following in October. (jo)

INTERVIEW

"My strenghts are with Micro Machines 2"

M! talked to Mega-Drive champion Richard Neuman. In a very intermingled field of competitors, the 27-year-old student of Electrical Engineering from Braunschweig reached the finals in five out of six disciplines.

M!Games: Congratulations on winning the championship! How many groupies have already slipped you their phone number?
Richard: None so far, but we'll go out for some drinks soon.

M!Games: Where did your strenghts lie today?
Richard: My strenghts, as usual, lie with "Micro Machines". Usually with "Sonic", too. I was very surprised myself that I got that far at "Bomberman".

M!Games: How did you prepare for the championship?
Richard: About every two weeks I meet with a buddy of mine to play some games. Since the tounament games were announced we played those in particular. When I was a teenager we played a lot of videogames in my family, and I always tried to defeat my older brother. Also, the Mega Drive is in fact the only console I own.

M!Games: In which ways could the tournament be improved?
Richard: I liked it a lot. Maybe next time we could throw in different games for some extra diversion, for example "Eternal Champions".
