so i have a jaguar

I bought an atari jaguar last night on ebay for around £60 all unboxed. It came with cybermorth,checkered,flag,syndicate,iron soldier,zool2,tempest 2000, kasumi ninja,hover strike,alien vs predator, and cresent galexy. I have my eye on wolfenstein and ultra vortek (a good mortal kombat clone) along with a few others i cant remember. anyone know any other good games for it? i think i got carried away in the moment buying it lol atleast extra controllers were cheap and easy to get so someone can suffer checkered flag with me! ah well some games seem good.:)

Gotta get doom, a unique port that's pretty damn awesome. like a number of other ports (most being based on the Jag one) some levels are modified or removed. (it's missing 5 levels, but adds 2 unique ones and modifies some others) It also has the best shading of any of the original versions (ie non modern sourse ports), PSX is second best. (jag uses 256 colors with 256 shades each, so super somooth shading) The trade off is the PSX runs slightly smoother framerate and at the full 320 wide resolution, jag is 1/2 that, like low detail mode on PC. (PSX has the replaced ambient soundtrack and sound effects more like Quake opposed to Jag w/out in-game music, short load times, and original sfx)
PSX ultimate doom adds a whole lot more though.

But again, it's a neat port and a very good one (especially being the 1st console port, somewhat rushed, and on the Jaguar -then again, it's John Carmak...). Definitely better than AvP on the Jag.

Yeah, DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D would be the only games that I'd really be interested in... Well, and perhaps Tempest 2000 - although, that's also available for Saturn and PS1.

Tempest was a nice little game if you can make it through the graphical ability not being what you might think it should be.....

Maybe watch out for some homebrews....Check out Atariage.com for some homebrew action.

Rayman's an absurdly hard game. I was very much surprised when I got it for the Saturn. How can a game that looks like it's meant for kids be so friggin hard? I need to go back and try to beat it again. The first time I got halfway through before it broke my soul.

Since i dont have the jag yet i dont know but im guessing the 3do is better more good games and you can burn them strait from roms. Its the one i got first.

The Jag version of T2K is probably the best though, I like the musi a bit better than th eremixed CD versions and the pixel blasts are weaker on Saturn and replaced by polygons on PSX. (I think color dept is different on both as well, I'm not sure if the Jag is using CRY mode -256 colors by 256 shades- but if it is, that would have a big impact on shading and lighting effects)
AI is supposed to be a lot better int he Jag version as well.

However, T2K is one of the games that runs very well on emulators (including Project Tempest), so lacking an actual Jag, that's an option. (well other than legal/moral issues -you could always pick up one of the real PSX/Saturn copies in that case but play it on an emulator if you lack a jag :p)

I think Rayman has higher color on the Jaguar as well (again, not sure if its using CRY mode -probably not 24-bit color mode), and there are differences, I persoanlly like the sound on the Jag version, and 2D really is the Jag's stong point. (and Rayman doesn't even push it -not surprising as Ubisoft took the easy route and avioided contending with the bugs in favor of limiting the capabilities avaialble -obviously the right choice, otherwise it might not have been released prior to the Jag going under)


If Jaguar stuff was going for the prices it was like 3-4 years ago (ie $20 for a system, 2 controllers, 5-6 games, and maybe even A/V cables) I'd definitle pick one up, but as it is, I don't really want to spend that much, I'm more of a collector on the cheap. (Sonic 3 CIB for $11 is the most I've persoanlly spent and that was mainly due to shipping, that and I did pay kind of a lot for my first Genesis model 1 and M1 CD last year -like $60 with about 1/2 being shipping)


I mean, it's a neat little system, and fairly compact as well, enough cool games (and unique ports) to merit picking it up. Actually, if BattleSphere was remotely accessible in a reasonable manner, I'd pick one up in spite of the higher cost. (if you shop around you can fing a decent set for $30 still, probably closer to $40-50 shipped -I mean a bare bones console, 1-2 contollers, RF only, and maybe 1 game)
BattleSphere is supposed to be really awesome though, and I am a space combat sim fan, but unless I end up befreinding some local Jaguar fan who happens to own a copy, or get to try it set-up at a convention, it's not that likely unfortunately.
That or if Phase Zero had actually been released, or some of the awesome CD exclusives hand't been CD exclusives. (like battlemorph, iron soldier 2, world tour racing, or hoverstrike: unconquered lands -obviously with more limited, or missing soundtracks)

well when i get it i will have to remember to post my first impressions and if i think its worth it. I might even pick up the cd add on i still have around £200 spare floating around in a few unused banks i didnt even know i had lol.:D

Am I the only one who really likes the design of the Jaguar? I don't know what it is, but it just catches my eye really well. That alone would make me want it.
