I love all of his game console reviews. It's what made me want a Sega CD, Sega 32X and Atari 5200.
I'm not normally a big fan, but the Die Hard one made me lol.
Umm, maybe because thery're completely different games, and "looking better" is completely subjective. THe fact is the Jaguar excels at 2D, its 3D is relatively modest (and it's strengths in 3D are weakes with polygons too -other methods like raycasting and voxel rendering show its advantages over contemporaries more).
But yeah, the Jag could do a pseudo 3D mode7/scaled environment WAY better than the SNES (or Sega CD), Atari Karts is a good example. (way more color, higher resolution sprites/textures, and use of the blitter to create the apearance of height gradients -hills rather than a flat plane) Looks are one thing of course, you can't really argue gameplay so much over mario kart. (music is quite well done, but not fitting to the game)
Same for Cybermorph vs Star Fox, WAY more colors, smoothe shading, higher framerate, more polygons on screen, etc. (gameplay is another issue, and yeah, a simple rail shooter might have been a better idea -especially as they tend to facilitate clipping to reduce polygons)
Had cybermoph only used polygons for certain objects and ships and a voxel based landscape, it would have been stunning, too bad Phase Zereo was the onyl game to push voxels on the Jag, amazing and unreleased. (I think the black BG in cybermorph probably adds to the false impression of lacking colors -compared to Battlemorph for example -definitely a better game overall -still would have benefitted from voxels though, to bad it was CD only)
Heh, Fusion did that for me, that and this board (and CGR), AVGN was a bit of a catylist to getting me back into retro electronics/games though.
I tend to like the reviews where he turns the cursing down. For a while, it was too excessive. His console reviews are usually entertaining, but he really made the SCD and 32X sound worse than they actually are. He made a lot of good points, though.
I don't think he had enough games to really get an impression of soem of the Sega CD (or 32x) stuff, not rare/expensive games either, common/cheap ones. (Virtua Racing Deluxe, Shadow Squadron, Maybe Space Harrier or Afterburner, then there's stuff liek Silpheed, Battlecorps, SoulStar, Stellar Fire, NovaStorm, among others -I think Android Assault or Shining Force CD would be a bit less common -Snatcher and Lunar fetch high prices) That, and Lethal Enforcers is much more fun with the Justifier, usign the gamepad is pretty clunky.
It would have been interesting if he'd used Virtua Racing Deluxe as a comparison to Checkered Flag on the Jaguar.
I don't think he meant to give it a fair review with each and every single half decent game taking into consideration. The focus was on the add-ons themself and their marketing and I think even though he is the Nintendo Nerd he pretty much hit the nail on its head.
This thread got me into watching his videos again. I have to say, he's very entertaining when he controls his cursing. I can't stand (most) of the people who leave comments on his vids. His site is the home for wayward nintendo fanboys. Multiple people saying things like the Wii is the best system on the market and how no sega console can compare to nintendo. I personally think the Genesis wipes the floor with the NES, but I know 90% of the gaming public will disagree with me.
And there's strong evidence that it outsold the latter in all markets save Japan.
I think I like both the Genesis and SNES more than the NES overall, or the games I own at least. (then again, I think I might like the N64 more than NES as well... I really like multiplayer games)
I think AVGN is going to be around for at least a couple more years, there are TONS of shitty games and game systems out there.
My favorites are:
-Atari 5200
-Jaguar
-Superman
-Godzilla
-Batman
I think my favorite has to be the Power Glove video. I like some of his more elaborate reviews, but that one's got that classic Nintendo Nerd style where he doesn't go completely overboard, it's just some guy trying to play a game and being frustrated. It was hilarious to see how even good games could be terrible using that thing. The icing on the cake was the Top Gun part. Him actually landing the plane was predictable, but his expression was priceless. And the "Playing Top Gun with the Power Glove; it's like puking on a pile of shit" is one of my favorite Nerd quotes.
Now he just has to find an Activator... :D
