I refuse to use my PS2 for that sheer reason, why does the Plasma TV have to be the only TV I can use for gaming.:|

You can mod a PS2 to play backup games, using the HDD.

It would be a lot more work to play backups of a PS3 game (especially if you have a small HDD) and you'd have to know someone with a Blu-Ray burner to play backup discs.
