The DSiWare Review/Recommendation Thread

Seeing as how many of these games/programs aren't seeing much attention from sites like IGN & 1up, I figured we can tackle it ourselves.

Outside of InternalPrimate & JFLY, I'm not sure how many of the rest of you will benefit from this, but here goes:

Downloaded Dark Void last night and it ROCKS! It's well-worth the $5 asking price if you enjoy action platformers like Metroid, Kid Icarus, and Bionic Commando.

On the flipside of the coin is Magic Castle (or whatever it's called). Look, I know this is a port of a cell phone game, and maybe in that
medium it looked pretty good. But damn, this game SUCKS. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if the framerate wasn't so strobe-y or the controls so floaty. But it is and they are. "Mario for the iPhone," indeed.

Didn't Hudson release a Bomberman for DSiware? That's an obligatory purchase if you don't have Bomberman for the DS.

Alright, I figured it was time to bump this thread.

I've downloaded about 20 games so far, and I'd have to say my favorites are as follows:

Flight Control: Yes, I probably could have paid less for it on iPhone. But I didn't. I still think it's worth the $5.

Dark Void Zero: Better than Mega Man 10, shorter or no.

Bookworm: I've never actually played this game until I downloaded it from DSiWare, and holy smokes is it addictive! My only complaint is that your progress is saved: what sense does that makes in a puzzle game? :wtf:

Spotto!: Incredibly simple concept and very much so a "one trick pony," but I love the presentation and I keep coming back to it.

Base 10: Definitely one of my favorite of the ArtStyle games

Precipice: ...and this is my other favorite.

20 games?! Sounds like I'm not the only one who got their money's worth when upgrading to a DSi.

I agree with MrMatthews on a couple of games, so I'll keep my favorites list short:

I love love love Wayforward. Contra 4 and A Boy and his Blob are my two favorite recent 2D games. They just understand how to make a polished, charming experience. Mighty Flip Champs is no different. Kind of reminds me of one of my favorite GameBoy games: Donkey Kong. It's a puzzle platformer that never gets too frustrating, but can be one hell of a challenge. Worth the $8 asking price.

I'm a sucker for the original Rayman. Maybe I was just blown away back when I first played it on the Saturn, the animation being so good, but I've always loved this game. This is pretty much a straight forward port of the original, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Plays better than the GBA port, and the second screen is put to minor use.

This game has really impressed me. Beautiful visuals, tight control, and fun dual screen gameplay. Feels like a full GBA game, only far cheaper! This is the kind of game that I looked forward to when the DSi Ware was first announced.

That said, if given the chance, I'd ignore all three of those games if only given one choice. Instead, I'd get Dark Void Zero. Had DVZ been released in the 8-bit era, it would be a beloved classic today. It's amazing in how successfully Capcom infuses a new game with 8-bit mechanics. MrMatthews claimed that it is better than Mega Man 10, and while I can't confirm that (I've yet to purchase MM10!), I will say that I find DVZ to be on the same level as MM9, and that's pretty shocking. Plainly put, DVZ is better than its parent game.

What can I say? I love playing games on my DS. I will gladly pay 3 to 5 times the amount of an iPhone game to play a visually inferior version of the same game on the DS. That goes for games like Flight Control to full retail games like GTA: Chinatown Wars.

I've always loved this game.

I downloaded that one, too, because I'm a sucker for 2D platformers. I really need to put some serious time into it. I've played about twenty minutes of this game over the past twelve years, and each time I pick it up my attention starts to fizzle. However, I need to make myself finish it before I start its sequel, which I downloaded recently from PSN.
