Well, they had a mega-hit in both the arcade and console sales with Daytona USA so they tried their darnedest to crank out as many versions as they could to capitalize on the opportunity. I originally had a regular Daytona USA and I think I sold it when I got the NetLink edition. I dont' think I ever played either of them all that much anyway.
I bought the NetLink version back in the day just to have it and since it was only being sold direct from Sega I figured it would be collectible in the long run. Guess I was right. There is a sealed copy that popped up on ebay recently for $899 BIN though I don't think it ever sold. Originally it was put up as a straight auction with a reserve price. It got over $500 and didn't sell, reserve not met, then it turned up with the above mentioned BIN price. I know a guy willing to pay $600 for it, but has yet to find a copy.
I played Daytona USA in the arcades since its release in the US, and regularly took top 3 placing of the top machine times for each track at every arcade I ever saw it in (6 or 7).
When the original Saturn Daytona was released I just couldn't stomach the thought of playing with a digital pad, not to mention the graphics were less than enticing. It just couldn't compare to the arcade. (and yes I do own that version, and can't stand playing it)
I never played the US CCE so I can't comment on that, but I've played the Japanese CE extensively, even in system link 2 screen play. I have played the JPN version and then gone to the arcade directly and played the sitdown unit and notice no major variation in how the stock car handles.
Playing with the analog pad on Saturn, (with analog brake and gas of course) I am able to take every turn, do every powerslide, and draft behind cars, just the same as I do in the arcade. When I played regularly my lap times were almost the same as I would achieve in the arcade (slightly slower on Saturn - but I'm without a wheel and actual stick shift of course (btw, the Saturn wheel really sucks without analog gas and break).
I really have no idea how anyone can say anything other than the Japanese CE is the very best racer on Saturn, and a damn good arcade port.
I'm gonna go with Badnusty here and say playing Daytona with a digital pad ruins the game. I'm sure it'd play better with an analog controller.
Still, I dislike the context you are putting Sega Rally in. Championship is an AMAZING racing game. One of the best I've ever played and easily playable with a digital pad. Daytona, not so much...
I probably need to get a replacement, I tried to tighten up the control stick and now it can center properly. I move the control stick back but the car (in Sega Rally) doesn't go in a straight line, it jitters.Quote:
Same, I think it's probably the best 3D controller ever produced, because the button layout is good for just about any game.
Hahaha, good one!
Seriously, Panzer Dragoon Saga is a game I would recommend to anyone without reservations. I don't own a copy myself, but I have played though a friend's copy and still intend to drop $150+ on it one day. It's that good.
Dragon Force is cool, I like it. It's no Panzer Dragoon Saga, though.
Daytona USA can't be used with the 3D Pad. It doesn't work.
Dammit... I wouldn't know because I never tried my 3D pad with Daytona USA.
Guess I'll have to stick to Sega Rally to get my racing fix... I don't like how the cars automatically center in Daytona USA.
