I've never ordered from them, but I know people who have (no complaints from them).

When I don't get them locally, I use mouser typically. I was pretty pleased with the results of replacing the caps with SILMIC II ones; I'm considering trying some of the variants I've seen on ebay for some experimenting with Genesis sound.

Now I'm curious about console5 - I have a guy sending me his x'eye for a recap. He bought it from a guy who said he changed all the caps, but is getting some really bad audio from Sega CD games (Genesis games play perfectly, but SegaCD games have audio problems for any music that's not CDDA (i.e. music from the "past" stages in Sonic CD, as well as the BIOS music). After examining photos of the board, I notice he's got 25v 47uf caps (which should work) and he decided the guy might not have put everything in there right or maybe used some bad ones and says he wants to just get fresh caps on it (too bad I don't have an ESR reader).

So I'm wondering if console5 gives you the exact caps necessary, or if they just send 25v and 50v caps of different capacitance.

I'm still using the Elna SILMAC IIs from mouser, but those are also kinda pricey in small quantities. I have a bunch of unused Elna caps too, but they're probably 10+ years old. I use them without problems just fine, but if someone's paying me to do a recap, I'm not gonna throw old caps in without a way to test their efficiency.

I could probably go with a cheaper brand, but I don't really have enough familiarity with other brands to know which are reliable and which aren't. I've always trusted Elna so I've always stuck with them

Ok, I just got an email back from console5 and they use Panasonic, Nichicon and/or Rubycon caps, most of which are 105c temp rated - exceptions made for Bipolar where 105 availability
is very slim to nonexistent. Voltages aren't always matched exactly, but are usually fairly close. If you ordered a JVC X'eye kit, the 16v and 10v (47uf) caps would all be 25v. While these should work, I prefer matching to spec (unless a specific mod is being performed that requires a different value) for two reasons:
    • In the event it needs a recap down the road, it's better to know the actual values expected
    • If higher voltage caps don't make a difference, why bother to have 6.3v, 10v, 16v, etc denominations in the first place? All small caps should just be 50v Xuf by that logic

I have a question. I was in 3 quarters into recapping my VA2 genesis. I would check every so often to try the system out, and it would turn on.

So again I was about 3 quarters through, and I would turn the machine on, but my game (sonic 2) would not boot up, it's just a black screen.

Now here's the bizarre part. I have the Mega Everdrive X7, and that turns on. But when i select a genesis title, it still will not load. Now what's strange here, is that I can load up Sega Master System games, visual, sound, controls, all work correctly.

Can a capacitor cause the Genesis not to run a Genesis title? Please help, thank you. :-)

    edit

I figured it out, my soldering iron nicked a trace, leading from the cpu chip near the cartridge connector. So I severed the section I nicked, soldered a wrote from the pad, followed the trace to the via it went to, exposed the via and soldered the wire to it, and my Genesis games worked again. So I went back, and finished recapping my system.
