Thumbs up Heart of the Alien

The original Out of This World was an incredible game, combining awesome storytelling with a solid gameplay experience. The sequel, Heart of the Alien, was released for the Sega CD (along with the first game, all on a single CD), and it received less fanfare than its predecessor. Is it because it's an inferior game, or did the media just pass by this one entirely? Read our full review and find out.

I really wanted to love this game, and for most of the game i did,
but when the ending showed the hero Lester dying I felt cheated, and it instantly ruined the game for me.

I say we find the people responsible for this ending and slap him across the face with a wet trout.

if i remember correctly, Heart of the Alien wasnt made by the same guy that made the original Out of This World/Another World.

i loved OOTW on Genesis, but the SEGA CD version has some response lag.

there is also a HighRes (1280) PC version that looks incredible and plays ultra smooth.

...this is what FMV should have been

Oh, I disagree. Sometimes the hero dies, just like in real life. Sad but true. But in the end, he saved his alien friend, that's the happy ending.

However, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the game designer/author saying he regretted killing off the hero since it kind of closes the door on any sequels. Of course they could always do a "Search for Spock" scenario if they wanted to bring back the hero for another go. This is Science Fiction after all, anything is possible!

Humph, so it was Chahi's idea to kill Lester off.

I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

DON'T DO IT! IT'S NOT WORTH IT!

Even if you know the outcome, it's still five times better than any FMV tripe.

I think this game is worth it just to play a smoother version of Out of this World. The SNES cart that I have is so slow and nearly unplayable.

I never played much of the sequel, instead I just played the spiritual sequel, Heart of Darkness.

The Genesis version plays pretty smooth, though some say the lower res ruins it.

Just ordered this game. I loved Flashback, so it really is a wonder why I waited so long to get this game. I hope itīs as good as everyone says it is.

Just be aware that the difficulty level ramps up from Flashback to OOTW and HOTA a fair amount. Keep working at it though, both games are worth the effort!

One of my faves on Sega CD besides Road Rash, Flashback, and Final Fight. Been awhile since I played too. Think it's time to pull it back out again.

Wow, just picked this up, and it's just awesome! I've always loved atmospheric games, and the soundtrack is very ambient, mysterious, ominous -- similar to the Ecco games, and there are even wild animals' cries mixed in, just like the Ecco games have sea animals' calls mixed in.

Nice cut-scenes, and what a first scene! Materializing in a deep mysterious pool, crazy background of the water pit, shimmering, and a huge clear splash sound... Wow I'm hooked.

Also, I guess I misunderstood the game description a long time ago; I always thought that one of the games on the disc was actually Flashback, but no these are two unique games I've never seen. If I realized that I would have gotten it sooner.

Also I got this today for free in mint condition; It was crazy. I bought this cart-only Slimeworld, and it was $2 since the label was messed up. The card turned out to be dead, and returned it, and he told me to get anything I wanted for $5 -- most games even CIB, even Sega CD games. Asked about this one, and the sticker said $20! "Oh are you sure it's that much?" "Well let me check if there might be a different price in the system. Sometimes they're lower bc those games are OLD." (LOL) *checks computer* "Actually it's not in the system, so just take it for the $5 credit!" So it was free, or it was $2.

Heart of the Alien is one of those games that sits on my shelf just daring me. "Play me, I dare you, let me suck countless hours from your life." Every time I am tempted, but fortunately I haven't had the fortitude to keep playing after I get killed a couple hundred times and still have no clue what to do.

Freaking_awesome_game, I love it to death, but man is it hard.

It's not that smooth, it has killer slowdowns toward the end of the game that can be a deal breaker for some. The sound is rather tinny, too.
On the other hand, the SEGA CD version of Another World has no slowdown at all, magnificent soundtrack and sound effects.
I played both and I'll never put the cart ever
