Default Playing copied games on Saturn question.

Im thinking about picking up a Saturn this week, and I need to know if there was any specific models that will play games copied onto CD-R's. Maybe it can be done on all of them, but I dont know, cuz I havent had a Saturn since the 90s. Any help and input is appreciated!

This is a forum, NOT a chat room.

Which means you'll have to wait till someone decides to answer.

the older, oval-buttoned models are compatible with a swap trick, but it sucks and definitely is not a good idea for regular use.

A much better choice would be a newer round-buttoned Saturn with a mod chip. Look at consolegoods.co.uk and you'll see the different compatible Saturns.

Also, just in case they haven't changed the guide, make sure to put the power wire in with the CD drive connection, NOT on the power supply, it took me 5 hours of checking and double checking to determine the guide was wrong and not all models (if any) can be soldered straight to the power supply.

forget the swap trick its pretty hard on the console and is just plain frustrating, just get the mod chip, you may even find someone locally to install it(with some directions which are available) if your not handy with a soldering iron
I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

Get one of the newer ones with a mod chip. The chip I got from Racketboy was strictly a plug and play thing. You just connect it inline between the drive and the system.

You'll also need a 4-in-1 cart like this if you want to play stuff from outside the system's native region.

Edit: Looks like my memory was a little fuzzy. There was some soldering involved but it wasn't to the system. I just did the alternate thing for step 5 where I bridged points A and B on the mod chip with some solder.

The one from Racketboy is only plug and play for Model 2 Saturn. If you had to use a Model 1 Saturn you have to modify the chip. They have tutorials on the site.

It would be a lot cheaper to do a region switch mod, then to buy a 4in1 cart. Though having the 4in1 cart has it's advantage.

The consolegoods.co.uk modchip is configurable for a number of Saturn models and doesn't suffer from the allegedly fragile connector of the racketboy chip. Though, then again, the consolegoods chip is a little sloppy in that you have to insulate it from the RF shield (to keep it from grounding out on it) and then tape it down to keep it from moving around freely.

As for imports, you don't need a 4 in 1 if you're playing ISOs burned to CD-R, you just need to region patch the ISOs (VERY easy):

if you encounter problems, you may need to install Microsoft .NET framework. It's free and I have no earthly clue as to why it isn't standard. You also need .NET to play MAME games online via supercade.net formerly known as 2dfighter.com, so you'll be killing two birds with one stone.

get a round button saturn, and add the mod chip it's super easy to install. IMO the swap trick is a pain in the ass.

Here's a video I made a while ago showing how I do the swap trick. It's really easy to pull off, actually.

wow...that looks like a horrible idea and a good way to mess up your authentic Saturn games and your CD drive. Get a modchip and do it right, if you get the right round button model it's not even that hard.

Yeah you going to destroy the magnets inside the motor. When they loose their polarity, the motor will stop working.

I put it as a warning on the side, but personally, I haven't had any trouble yet and I've done this on a couple Saturns hundreds of times. There's no doubt there's some damage being done, however.
