I have a ps1,ps2,and ps3. I got some import games, I want to play... What would you do? Buy a modchip? If so from who and where? Or purchase a jap ps1? If so how much and where usually? Sorry for the questions.

    Modchips are not illegal.

If you don't want to go into modding, I suggest you look into a swap disc for the PS2.
The "Breaker Pro" is 20 bucks. I don't know if it's any good, it doesn't seem to need the slide card or anything to rig open the drive.

I would personally get a ChipModPro+ 2.0 and mod the PS2 though, they're 35 bucks, work in most PS2s, and require basic soldering skills. It all depends on what board revision you have inside, but it will work more often than not.

Mod chips void the warranty as far as legal issues are involved.

You could always buy one of those swap discs.
They're a pain in the ass, but they should work to boot imports and backups.

Yes, they don't break any laws otherwise. You're legally allowed to reverse engineer any piece of hardware you own.

In Canada our copyright laws permit fair use of backups as well, as long as you're not distributing or profiting. You're allowed to keep backups of software you own & must destroy the software you don't own after a period of time. We pay a tiny bit more, for blank CDR's. the CRIA/RIAA gets a cut of 'ALL' cdr sales, regardless if they're for music or not. It's a compromise that's seemingly unfair, but it gives them less fuel to leech off society in other ways.

Here's the full deal on region coding for the PS3:

PS1 games: region locked. Apparently though, you can play import PSone games downloaded from PSN.
    PS2 games: region locked.
    PS3 games: region free.
    DVD movies: region locked.
Blu-ray movies: partially region locked, partially region free. You can find an extensive database of region code info for Blu-ray movies from all around the world right here.

I agree Sony kinda should've made the PS3 region free for PS1 games. I mean, who cares anymore now whether they're region free or not? I too have a couple of PS1 imports I'd love to be able to play in my PS3. Not having that feature makes the PS3 no more useful for playing PS1 games than my PS2 already was.

I agree, I was hoping the whole thing would be region free.

We have same stuff here, all CD/DVD/BR discs are a bit more expensive because of the piracy/copyright related organizations.
